I Went To High School With Shannon Tweed

Yeah it's true - in real life I went to high school with Shannon Tweed. I also graduated from Mount Royal Collegiate in Saskatoon with the VP of R&D at Pixar.

None of this has anything to do with my candidacy for Congress from Prince Edward Island, but given some of the campaign ads that we're seeing I thought this might gain me a little attention so that I can talk about issues that matter.

I said in my campaign position paper that I am running on a reconstructionist platform, and stated that there were three aspects that were of importance to me. These are Industrial Reconstruction, Infrastructure Reconstruction, and National Reconstruction. We have made progress in each of these areas but more needs to be done.

In terms of Industrial Reconstruction we are starting to see some improvements, but we need to see changes in some policies. I do not normally support a protectionist policy in terms of trade. It tends to be bad for manufacturers and bad for consumers. However these are not normal times; well regarded companies are in occupied regions and new companies have to rise to replace them. These companies need protection from competition until they are able to stand as equals with external competitors if national interests are well served by this. We need low Import Taxes on raw materials that we don't produce and high Import Taxes on raw materials that we do produce. Theoretically we need higher Import Taxes on virtually all manufactured products but of course that runs into areas of National Defense and Reconstruction; we need weapons from wherever we can get them, and gifts of hospitals so that we can get back into the fight.

One area where we should probably have higher Import Taxes is Food. The current tax regime, where the taxes are 10% Income, 10% Import, and 1% VAT was introduced before the recovery of Alberta. The result is that out of 16 companies in the Canadian market offering food of Q2 or better only one is based in Canada. Five of the seven companies producing Q1 food are Canadian. We need more Canadian companies producing higher quality food.

In the area of Infrastructure Reconstruction, the creation of a Q5 hospital in Alberta is a huge improvement, allowing our people based in Alberta to fight in wars. This does however force us to concentrate our population in this one area, and one that is surrounded by enemies at that. While I clearly don't advocate Q5 Hospitals in every region - at least not in the current situation, I would like to examine the feasability of locating hospitals of some quality in each region.

In terms of National Reconstruction, I previously stated that it was necessary to coordinate Resistance Wars as a means of forcing our enemies to choose which regions they will defend. We are seeing an example of this at work as I write. The current rising in British Columbia started a few hours after a rising against the French in Cantabria. As I write this The French are fighting hard to retain British Columbia, throwing massive resources into the fight. However Cantabria has liberated itself and the French are facing a rising in Aragon. The principle is valid even if this limited application even if the results at this point are not on our side. I firmly believe that a massive rising against Hungary will produce positive results, but it needs to be coordinated and not just by our people but with those in other countries.

In conclusion I'd like to say that what we need most in the coming Congress is people who put the good of the country ahead of partisanship. It is part of the reason why I joined the Canadian National Coalition, and the sole reason why I chose to run for Congress. That is the most important thing for all of us to remember on Election Day.
