I am a Passionless Rat Vying for the Presidency

Day 1,271, 04:32 Published in Belgium Belgium by Manong Z

It has been more than a year since I was here in Belgium. My first ticket to the presidency, though controversial, captured many supporters exponentially. I daresay that I would’ve won if I actually ran.

Though now, I would not say the same. Why so? Well, there is that sort of pragmatism that emerges through experience. You see things quite differently now; the passion is gone and a devious worry for national affairs has replaced it. And of course, pecuniary matters continue to subdue that said passion as well.

Yes, that passion that led me to challenge Congress to create Belgium’s first constitution, that passion that led me to vehemently and openly attack our American and Romanian invaders, that passion that drove me to continue pursuing my ideals of an independent Belgium, a multi-cultural community of different individuals vying for one cause, that passion that sparked our very own neutrality when everyone else thought it was impossible; yes, that is the passion that I lost. That is the passion that both Belgium and I have forgotten. Gone and sadly forgotten.

Thus what can I, a passionless rat, offer you, dear Belgium?

Well, I could promise a utopia, I could promise distant lands, I could promise fresh new ideas, and I certainly could promise for fun. But promises are the enemy of pragmatism, thus, I could’ve given you my curriculum vitae: an endearing compilation, arrogantly compiled, of my achievements. But I will not.

I want Belgium to remember who I am, but that cannot happen if I don’t remember who I am first. Looking to the past, prideful, will not help me remember. What will help me remember is passion, the passion that I have lost.

Help me regain that passion, elect me as your country president this June.

Signed, Manong Rizal
