How to play eRepublik: An introduction for the new citizen

HOW TO PLAY EREPUBLIC

I published this article some months ago to decent reception. Since I am noticing a spike in the USA’s population, I believe there are a bunch of new players who need to get an education on the fundamentals. So, in support of our little baby boom, I'm bringing this up out of the archives to assist all our new citizens in the basics of eRepublik.

THIS GAME IS ALL WORK-TRAIN-EAT, RIGHT?

Well, yes and no. You do work, train, and all that every day, but that it is not the true depth of the game. eRepublik is community based, so if you do not participate in the greater community, you will not experience the full extent of this games entertainment value. While the Official Forums are an interesting part of the community, they are the domain of trolls (much like an image board) and very rarely have an impact on the game outside providing memes.

For the American Player, you should go to the official eUSA Forums for more inspired discussion

JOBS

As a new player, you are starting out with 0 skill in all three job abilities, Manufacturing, Construction, and Land Working. Manufacturers do the bread and butter work, they make the guns, gifts, moving tickets and food. You’ll find most citizens fill this role, and most available jobs will be manufacturing work. The other role is in Land Working, where the raw materials (Oil, Iron, Grain, Diamonds and Wood) are harvested. Due to lower amount of Land Workers, pay is slightly higher but jobs are also scarcer. The final skill set is Construction, which is the manufacturing of Hospitals, Defense systems, and Houses. Presently, only Housing is an industry that is making money, though high ranking Construction work can be among the most well paid in the game, but that is relative to the demand for housing. The other two construction commodities are run out through Government scut work and are primarily volunteer basis only.

FINDING A JOB

As a skill 0, you will not be able to apply for any of the really sweet job offers for high skilled workers (so set your job hunting filter accordingly). As a low ranked player, it is highly recommended you do not work for any 2 star or more ranked company until you reach level 5. Each star indicates how much wellness you will lose when you work. If your employer is a 5 star company, you will lose 5 health every time you work, and without access to decent food and the battles you will soon die. Chances are, if a high star rated job offering was even available for low skilled players, it’s a trap put in place by our enemies designed to do exactly that - kill you. Once you reach level 5 and can participate in wars, your wellness will be assured and you can start looking at higher skilled jobs for better pay.

If no jobs at skill 0 are available, the government does run skill 0 job hubs. The best know hub is Fort Harlot for Manufacturing, though use this as a last resort.

MY COMPANY WILL NOT PAY ME

Easily fixed. Click the big red “RESIGN” button and find a new job if you are unwilling to wait for the employer to fix the supply issues.

WAR

Wars begin in eRepublik when either the Congress declares war, or a country our nation is allied with is attacked. The actual attacking is ordered by the respective Presidents. This can result in a situation where two countries are at war, but not actively fighting as neither President has “pushed the button” in order to initiative a battle.

THE BATTLES MAKE NO SENSE

This is the basic result of the War Module, the battle. The country on the Left is attempting to conquer the indicated territory. The Country on the Right is attempting to prevent it. If the red area is in the No Mans Land, the country on the Right will be the winner. If the red area is in the Underground, the country on the Left will be the winner. This is decided when the timer hits 00:00:00. If the red area is between No Mans Land or the Underground, the battle goes into sudden death and the first country to force the red area to their respective target wins. Moving the red area is accomplished by fighting. If you are the attacker, you will subtract points based on your damage when you fight. If you are the defender you add points based on your damage.

WHAT IS A TANK

A Tank is a high ranked player. They are given gold and weapons by their countries government to maximize their damage potential. 1 Tanking player fully funded has the potential to cause more the 30,000 points in damage. When you get a whole bunch of these players together, more then 200,000 points of damage can be done in the space of a few minutes, leading to “wall flipping” where a previously large barrier of damage points suddenly disappears.

SO THEN, MY DAMAGE DOES NOT MATTER

Actually, no. There are 21,000 US Citizens presently, but only a few dozen tanks. In the long run, the general citizenry can cause more damage. The Tanks only come out at the end to claim the victory. If they do not have the support of every low ranked player, the enemy may be too entrenched for them to claim a victory. Due to the linear nature of the game, if you stick around long enough you too will be considered a “Tank” compared to the other newer citizens.

HOW DO I FIGHT

Chances are, you have been born into a state without a Hospital (an absolute necessity for fighting). DO NOT FIGHT IF YOU HAVE NO HOSPITAL IN YOUR STATE. The only States with hospitals in the USA are California and Florida. To move to those states, you need a moving ticket. If you do not have the money for one, just ask for help in the proper forum on the eUSA Forums I posted at the top of the article, or in the #USA-Chat IRC room.

Other requirements for fighting are being level 5, and having 40 wellness. Fighting is good, because once you have fought, you can then go to the Hospital and gain 50 wellness (if it is a Q5, which both of our Hospitals are). If you are below 40 wellness, again, simply ask for help on the eUSA Chat room or Discussion Board. When I was level 5, I was helped in a similar manner.

I APPLIED FOR THE MILITARY, BUT THEY ARE IGNORING ME

The eUSA Armed Forces are Government funded. To insure that your tax dollars are wisely spent, they have strength and activity requirements. As a new player, it is unlikely that you will be accepted into the Army, Airborne, MI or Marine Corps. The Training Division does exist to help New Players, and if you plan on being an active player, this could be a place for you.

WHAT IS PEACE, EDEN, BROLLIANCE etc

These are all terms used to describe different groups of countries. PEACE is a former military alliance of nations that have been at war with the USA to some degree or another. EDEN is the principle alliance of nations that fought PEACE, while the Brolliance is the formal military and political pact between the USA and Canada

And this concludes Basic Game Play. More advanced concepts will be described here

WAR MODULE

The War Module explanations are many and varied, but they are also overly complicated. This is the quick nitty gritty, with terms explained.

INITIATIVE: The Country that is allowed to attack has “Initiative”. A Country does not have initiative (and therefore cannot attack) if….

1. It is defending a territory anywhere on the globe

2. Lost a battle in the last 24 hours.

Those are the two basic rules of Initiative. But they are subject to an exception.

Exception to Rule 2: If a country is attacking Province A when it loses a battle in Province B, initiative is not lost, provided they win in Province A. If they seem to be about to lose Province A, the President can still attack Province C before the battle in Province A ends, and thus preserve initiative. However, if the last open battle closes and no attacks have been won or started, initiative is lost for 24 hours. Additionally, a President cannot attack the same province twice in a 24 hour period.

RETREAT: Retreat can occur in the first 6 hours of a battle. The rules of Retreat are

1. If the attacker retreats, there is no penalty

2. If the defender retreats, initiative is lost for 24 hours in the particular war that the battle was open in. The defender can gain initiative in a different war provided they are not under attack anywhere else.

3. If the defender retreats a battle and then wins another defensive battle (in that order) initiative is gained, and the attacking country cannot attack for 24 hours.

Rule 3 was used by the USA to flip Russia’s initiative and started the final campaign of the North American War.

INITIATIVE LOCK

This occurs when a country permanently loses initiative and cannot attack unless circumstances change. If you read the rules for Defending and Attacking you may have noticed that the attacking country has an amazing advantage. While a country could win a battle in one war, if they are attacked by another country through a different war anywhere in the world, they cannot attack themselves. This happened to the USA a few months back when we were attacked through 3 separate declared wars by Portugal, Russia and Indonesia. We could win every battle against Indonesia and Russia, but not be able to counterattack because we were still defending against Portugal. Just mix around the names as needed and you get the general idea. Initiative Lock can also happen if there are many territories that can be attacked. Canada was able to prevent Hungary from attacking for weeks during the North American war using this method. While Hungary won almost every battle, they were unable to attack because Canada has always made sure to launch a new attack before an old one has closed.

MPP

Stands for Mutual Protection Pact. An MPP activates when a hostile country attacks a home region of another country with MPP’s. This allows citizens of an Allied country to directly participate in a foreign war without having to move to the belligerent country. The MPP’s are represented on the battlefield in the “Allies” list underneath the belligerent’s flags.

PRESIDENCY

The President of any country has awesome powers in eRepublik, because he is the sole deciding vote on whether to attack, or retreat. At a fundamental level, the War Module is a game of chess between Presidents. This is why a President is almost always a senior player. The President must have a deep understanding of all the game rules, and also be able to come on eRepublik at weird times to make sure everything goes according to plan. The President of Colombia contributed greatly to PEACE GC’s defeat in North America because he was unable to meet the time commitments. Additionally, the President is the chief executive of the eUSA's government agencies (yes, we got those too) and this requires a great deal of effort. Being the President in the eRepublik is much like in real life and is not for the casual player.

CONGRESS

Congressional elections are held once every month. You do not need to be physically present in the state you wish to represent as a Senator in order to run for office. All that is required is that you register in that state as a candidate before moving back to the hospital region. Furthermore, people who wish to vote for you must also do so in the state. The end result is that most Senators are elected by a few votes, or even win by the fact that nobody else ran in the state. In short, if you have 2 good buddies, chances are you can become a Senator. Unlike the Presidency, it’s a simple matter for a citizen to become a Senator, though it is always advised you get your parties official stamp of approval before you run. To do this, you must become active on your political parties Forum and IRC channel room. To find these out, simply check the Wiki page for the party you are in. Also keep in mind that only the top 5 political parties can front congressional candidates. If you do happen to get elected, remember that this will require your activity in the Congressional forums, and that you will have to follow the procedural rules of Congress. eAmerican Government in many respects resembles the real thing, and a brand new Senator will have to work at developing his or her credentials.

That pretty much covers things for now, if anyone has any questions feel free to send me a PM.
