How to Make an Order of Canada We Can All Be Proud Of
Rigour6
1. Create a Committee of distinguished Canadians and have them make the recommendations to the Prime Minister. It's not a bauble the PM tosses out based on his whims. (not that we're suggesting our PM did that)
2. Limit the number of recipients to 6 per month (note the next point): 3 at the lowest level, 2 to be promoted to the intermediate level, 1 to be promoted from the intermediate level to the highest level. Dilution removes value.
3. Do not allow persons to be entered into the Order except at the lowest level of the order, their promotion can take place the following month.
4. Have the announcement of recipients to take place at the same time each month.
5. Create an avatar garnish which can be added to recipients.
6. Create a government org in which only recipients of the Order are recognized as friends.

Aah. More elitism. Nice.

John, this is way less elitist than "Jacobi's Order".
From Wiki:
"The Order of Canada was on 17 April 1967 instituted by Queen Elizabeth II, on the advice of her then Canadian Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson, who was assisted with the establishment of the order by John Matheson."

Your namesake helped invent the very system which Rigour6 is alluding to. I thought I'd throw that in for irony.
It would be nice if people stop deriding the honoured citizens.
I never thought that I would be called an elitist.
Theres no gold for this award, only the respect of your peers...which is showing it's colours unfortunately.
if it makes any difference, Jacobi asked me for recommendations for order recipients, and I'm sure he asked several other people as well 🙂
I do think that its a good idea to establish a committee (of congressmen likely) to do this once a month.
I think the only reason that we havne't had new inductees in a bit over a year is because every PM forgot about its existance.
@ Tyler F Durden
I do not believe that the majority would call you any but what you are. You are not an elitist but rather a eCanadian citizen who gave his time and efforts to help both our nation and its people during these troubled times. You are deserving of any and all recognition bestowed upon you.
It is unfortunate that some do not take the time to understand how and why people are recognized. There will always be those who work behind the scenes and do not get public recognition but that should never diminish what you have accomplished or received.
Rather than a committee, all eCanadians should have the ability to make recommendations and those recommendations be reviewed by Cabinet or Congress. While I see some wisdom in limiting the number of awards I also would not wish to see any person go unrecognized based on some arbitrary quota. There is a balance that I am sure will serve the purpose intended
Okay, that works for me.
Although I still think that as the President has privy over all in regards to citizen's contributions - that the President should nominate citizens which Congress confers honours upon.
Thats all I'll say about that.
Gotta start packing for vacation, getting things in order.
Tyler will be in NYC from Sept.2 to Sept 10.
Startin' up a new underground boxing club in Manhattan.
Of course, in NYC people just box above ground, but I digress...
If there is any place in my article where I deride any of the recipients as undeserving, please feel free to point it out.
On the contrary, I am sure that many are deserving, and where there are some I don't know as well, that no doubt reflect more on me than on them.
My point is that if you want to create a national honour, then do it in a form that enhances the honour. I don't think our Pm just threw some baubles at his buddies, I accept that in all things his intentions are the very best. But I also know which road is paved with good intentions.
If one wants to do a right thing, it is often important to do it the right way. I'm suggesting improvements, others can debate whether we should or shouldn't have an OoC if they like, I think that would be a better debate if we had the best OoC possible.
Rigour6,
I did not say that your article derided recipients.
As a point of fact, I was supporting your article.
If you've had the luxury of reading comments in other related articles, and articles dedicated to this topic solely, you will see what I am talking about. Not only that, but my comment was pointed at John A Matheson, which I assumed was obvious.
I shall attempt to curtail my assumptions in the future.
Thats it. Anyone says anything else on this to me and I'm deleting all my comments.
If I may weigh in, a system in which citizens can nominate candidates on a bi or tri-monthly basis may work well.

Hi Tyler,
I assume we were talking past each other. We sound like we probably agree.
Your posts have been preserved. Spem Reduxit is dedicated to free speech, we do not allow persons to attempt to curtail debate in any way. The ability to disagree, we believe, is more important than the subject manner of any disagreement.
Persons who comment on our stories should feel free to edit their comments, clarify what they stated, change their opinions, and call each other right buggers, although we feel the last is a weak argument. They may not attempt to inhibit others from doing likewise through any means, including threats to delete their own comments. They are of course free to delete their own comments, which their opponents are then free to claim grants them victory in the debate currently underway. But by posting in the public square, the comments become community property. Persons who don't wish to engage in this process are invited to make their case anywhere else they choose, but at SR, those are the rules.
It's years later and I still agree with the contents of this article...
Quiet gypsy.
and they still haven't been implemented, which given they don't even need a congressional vote, just executive implementation, says a lot.
