History
"The compound word ekename, literally meaning "additional name", was attested as late as 1303. This word was derived from the Old English phrase eaca "an increase", related to eacian "to increase"
😉. By the 15th Century, the misdivision of the syllables of the phrase "an ekename" led to its corruption into the form "a nekename." Though spelling has changed, the pronunciation and meaning of the word have remained relatively stable ever since."
Web 2.0 and its Consequences
Since the arrival of Web 2.0 and the numerous social networks that came with it people hardly use nicknames anymore. "Look me up on facebook" is a common saying and the good old 90's with ICQ, IRC and Chatboxes are over.
Myself, I appreciate a well thought nickname with a long and interesting story behind it and never use my real name on the internet or in my non-formal e-mail address.
So what does the title have to do with this article? Noth... EVERYTING! How big is the deal behind your nickname?
(I know, it's a little farfetch'd, but I got you in here, didn't I?)
What's your story?
Those who don't use a nickname can explain how much they like cookies.

Mine comes from the French Enlightment philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. I used to hate philosophy and my frustration was all too big when I started my education as game developer and we got Philosophy.
We had to write a paper about philosophy and then I got very interested. I used to wiki all nights and look stuff up on wikipedia. I have this big book "History of Western Philosophy" from Bertrand Russell and I'm halfway through. I also changed studies to something that invites to more thinking and I can say philosophizing has really become a passion.
I like Rousseau for his irrationality and they way of life he proposes. The idea that people are born good but become corrupted by society is something I already believed in when I was a 12 year old.
So when I tried to register Rousseau was taken, so I had to screw around with it, and this is what it became.
I'm bald, my skin is green and I have a big eye in the middle of the head 😁 (zky because ski was already took on other forum)
I love this character
Nothing special about my nick. Letters are part of my RL name. Numbers are just because I liked Bond at the time I created it, particularly the easy way he could get the ladies on his hand 😛
The only particular thing about my nick is his age. I use this nick since 1994 (16 years).
this nick is the name of a person in a belgian televion production who looked like me a few years ago. And back then it has become my RL nickname among friends. Thus ...

Or to be short: just because I love Gent 🙂
In RL, I am mostly Scandinavian. If my forefathers had continued to use the old conventions, this WOULD be my real name.
This game is called "eRepublik - The New World", which triggrered a chain reaction of associations. If Aldous Huxley and Yevgeniy Zamyatin (two authors of great distopian novels) would have a son together, this is how they would name him in a less creative moment. Ironically enough, I'd like to be part of a utopian society here - but I guess this is how all distopias start 😛
Nice topic, Reaussou, let's discuss something else than politics for a change 🙂
actually, my nick is a mixture of my 3 children, HELena, VIc and RObbe
Jacob - From a random name generator
James - Because I wanted JJ as my initals. (it was origionaly John)
Medrolke - My XB Live Gamertag. I typed in random letters untill I got something that looked like a name. I did this as I wanted something origional (so it wouldn't be already taken no matter what I was trying to sign up to).
I smashed my head on the keyboard until I got a satisfying result: Zars. I decided to add -ky after. I'm creative, I know.
My last name is Gibbs and my birthday is April 5th since gibberish was taken. The irony is that most of the time I make complete sense 🙂
