Hate has formed the alliances in eRepublik, furious IRL hate.
Misho
Today USA and Spain have announced that they are leaving Terra respectively ONE. Once again countries are setting out to find a new way to play this game and put IRL conflicts aside. It has been tested numerous times before with very sad results.
I remember when we formed ATLANTIS back in 2008 that we tried to achieve the same thing. We had Croatia in ATLANTIS already and, if I remember correctly Serbia was added later as a country. Our goal was clear, we would like to try to settle IRL conflicts aside and what could be a better thing to do then to include both Croatia and Serbia in the same alliance?
Roby Petric, former eUS President and IRL Croatian and at the time eCroatian president shared that goal.
We failed miserably.
The following months eCroatia and eSerbia would completely destroy each others countries with constant PTO's and by creating mass inflation and 100% taxes making it impossible to live in the countries. It was like the Roman empire vs Cartago, the enemy should not only be killed their land should be destroyed for generations to come.
A side result was that thousands of IRL Serbs and Croats joined the game and the hatred was out of control.
For me as an old player in a Nordic country who IRL lives in another country far from 'home' and who really believed in this game, that it could be a 'Civilization online' as one Magazine back in 2008 said it could be, it has been a sad journey to witness that no ingredient has come even close to be as powerful as IRL hate and IRL nationalism in this game.
If you wanted easy results and stir up a conflict it was very easy to play the IRL card, eTurkey always fell for it, eGreece, eMacedonia (Don't you dare FYROM me(!)) could never resist the bate either.
With that said I must say that its very refreshing to see that some countries have tried to create an alliance without IRL conflicts in mind. Perhaps naive but still refreshing.
I would hope that eSerbia and eCroatia and other IRL-enemy countries would have done it first though. Taken the first step and said that enough is enough, we have stopped killing each other IRL so now we will prove that we can come along and co-operate if so only in a web browser game.
But still after four years that has never happened, it hasn't even been close since that day in 2008 when Roby Petric declared that Croatia had done what could be done and that Serbia could not become members.
We tried and failed. Miserably. Obviously no one has even come close after that. In a web browser game during 4 years when you have president elections and congress elections every month.
How sad isn't that?
Yours in Peace
Misho

Thanks for a real "oldfag" view. Seen it all before, will see it all again.

Just because your old doesnt mean your a fag mrs ironlady
Actually IRL Hungarian-Serbian relations are not better, than Hungarian-Romanian ones, still, the two countries, eSerbia and eHungary has been very close ever since eSerbia was added in early spring of 2009. But I agree, the Serbian-Hungarian case is one of the very few exceptions. IRL conflicts has kept eRep alive, they kept the admins in business.

655321, eSerbia - eHungary love in eRepublik wasn't that mainly a result of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. That and of course that eHungary probably had the best diplomats this game has ever had during a couple of months there 2009-2010.
A nice read!
Great article Misho. I too was thinking today, for the umpteenth time, that this ain't no Civ. Not by a long shot.
I met you very early on in the game, and though we've often been on e-opposite sides we always respected each other and had fun.
I'm sorry to say I feel the same .Meh - sometimes in eIreland the internal conflict was far more appalling than anything I've seen in the RL border area.
Some people just thrive on negatives. Hatred, bigotry and racism are commonplace now.
😞
good read my old friend
the "For me as an old player in a Nordic country who IRL lives in another country far from 'home' and who really believed in this game, that it could be a 'Civilization online' as one Magazine back in 2008 said it could be"- part made me remember why I started playing this game in the first place. To think they had so much potential back then
I used the term "oldfag" affectionately.
you're all pig-disgusting doublespaniards and I sentence you to eternal fighting in the Hungary-Romanian conflict to live out the rest of your days.
Yesterdays enemies are todays recruits
Where is the Love Glove?
Times are changing quite a lot lately. With Canada and the US on the verge of an open war, I think a lot will change. Who know's maybe Rylde will find some friend in Sweden during this trying time.
Keep up writting misho.
That's because the game is too tied up to RL borders .
The mechanics of the game should offer the possibility of "countries" being established by and for groups with different nationalities but with a similar goal .The countries/regions should not be tied up to their RL counterpart .
At the same time it would be very hard to bring people into the game with no RL ties .
Who would join the game seeing in a RL newspaper that Arcadia attacked Narnia ?
You can't put the real countries on the map and hope the IRL relations won't come along. It's psychology. If you want to get different relations, put the "elfland" and "orcsland" on the map... but then it wouldn't be eRepublic. So - no way to escape the IRL relations on IRL map.
Great article.
Sad but true.
Vlad and Trieciennieks,
you miss the point. The point is that we as players blame admin for making a game that takes advantage of IRL nationalism and hate but we as players haven't even tried to work against that. Despite hundreds of different presidents and thousands of different congressmen have been elected. We have continued to play Hungary vs Romania, Serbia vs Croatia and so on.
We have done that - not admin.
The job of admins is to make money while keeping the players in the game. eRep wouldn't be 1/100 of it without the attachment to IRL. Who would care about Narnia vs Arcadia? I wouldn't. But when it's, for example, the Baltic states vs Russia, I care. I don't blame admins for it, it's just a fact.
Trieciennieks,
you just can't leave the box can you? Narnia vs Arcadia might be Vlads idea of a solution, I don't share that. Can't you see another solution?
Misho,
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend" scheme does not work in case of the eHunagrian-eSerbian relations, or with the Hungarian-Romanian-Serbian-Croatian quadrangle. IRL Hungary and Croatia on the one hand, and Serbia and Romania on the other hand are much closer. Based on IRL logic, eHungary should be allied to eCroatia, and eRomania to eSerbia, not because of the presence of enormous symphaties, but rather because of the lack of hate.
So the eSerbian-eHungarian alliance was at least partly dictated by a civ-like, balance of power logic: you need a strong ally near by to cover your back, if you want to hold off an arch enemy at your front door.
Poland+Sweden=♥

Outs s2 Misho
maybe if all the countrys start to act without hate and stop the wars, admin can upgrade the economic, the politic and the media modules...
good point
agree on the issue
Well the admins have made a good foundation playing out the old IRL hate cards in the erepublik eWorld and it is probably making some extra gold too be bought in hate.
On the other hand Misho has a hugh point when he said that we as players make this irl "hate" become a part of the game, not the admins.
The admins made a virtual world on the Internet and we filled it with IRL values and thoughts instead of taking the chance to build a eWorld as we want it to be.
You know what's even sadder? Making new blood feuds because of this game. Most of the time there are nice players each side of the fence, if you are willing to look, but you don't always have the time to do that. eRepublik is a display of a lot of the worst and best qualities in humanity, as has been stated many times before.
Serbia - Croatia conflict is quite a fresh one by IRL standards. Wounds are still fresh. Can't blame them, really. I'd look towards RO - HU, MK - GR, TR - BG (failed).
Well theat is Balkan and always will be like theat and even we have peace for some time in the future must be another Balkan War theat is destiny haha
Misho,
the other solution is unreal, I think. You can't escape the social psychology, even in the game. Maybe if you would throw out all the nationalists, but it would leave the game with some 10% of the population. eRep IS based on nationalism. It's a fact. It's the nationalism which brings the people into eRep to "fight for your country".
So why don't we leave?
Vote
Trieciennieks,
you are getting closer to it now. We can still use nationalism but with changing targets.
In eSweden for example we can use nationalism for Sweden in wars against Germany/Russia/Norway/Denmark/Ireland/Canada or just anything.
In some countries though the overwhelming target is to delete the arch enemy, all else is sub priorities. That is something we as players can control our self, eSerbia and eCroatia can actually make an MPP in eRepublik.
They just prefer not to..
At least nationalism gets you new players though, the UK isn't getting anything from being split between France, Germany and Ireland atm : /
good atricle!
as a serbian i almost feel sorry that we never managed to get an alliance with croatia... a least just for the fun of it.
Are u afraid of SER-CRO MPP? xDDDDDDDDDD
We would own the world!
"thousands of IRL Serbs and Croats joined the game and the hatred was out of control."
You are wrong. My hate is and stays ingame...
"We have continued to play Hungary vs Romania, Serbia vs Croatia and so on."
Some ppl prefer not to change sides, some couldn't care less...
it is possible for countries with IRL hate to ally.
another game like this (I wont name it) have Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia allied.
And Turkey - Bulgaria allied aswell
Think Misho is onto something
+1 Cozza, just what I was thinking about
I have to say it.
This game was really fun before large amounts of Balkan people discovered it.
v
I remember back in 2009 when Serbs wanted Kosovo added, admins said it will be added with the new RW mechanics (being able to RW an original region). The direction some people seen was a removal of focus on RL part and allowing players to create "imaginary" countries. Instead, we got v2.
>This game was really fun before large amounts of Balkan people discovered it.
I personally have joined during that period, but left Serbia because of the lack of fun nationalism brought.
This game has always had a very low supply of visionaries in high politics.
Misho, my beloveable dearest Misho, your articles always makes me consider but for a brief moment to plunge myself right back into it again. Your oldfagish words are a lethal drug to my system.
