Hate Crimes
Sweet Drinker
Sure are a lot of 'Yes' placards up in Dublin atm.
My daughter watched a group of ppl methodically removing every 'No' placard as they moved down the street, tearing them to pieces and throwing them on the ground.
She asked me if she should send the pics of this to a news-broadcaster.
"It will never make the news. Get some pics of 'Yes' placards being treated like this and you've got yourself a primetime slot" I replied.
Anybody believe I was wrong?
Didn't think so...
Regardless of where you stand on an issue, if you will not allow the opposition their right to be heard, you're the enemy of Democracy.

I know a lot of No voters who are afraid to voice their opinions due to the verbal abuse they would receive.
I personally have joked about voting no and have had people say they won't be my friend if I do so. It's this sort of bully-boy tactics that I dislike and tempts me to vote No in spite.
Another fun argument I have with Yes voters is the following:
Me: Would you support a man being allowed to marry two women?
Yes people: No, if you want that go live in an Islamic country where it is acceptable.
Equality for everyone? Let me have my two wives.
Conor Pope of the Irish Times tweeted about this poster vandalism from so-called progressives a couple of weeks ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRMTRwdXEFE
As he says in the clip, they do harm to their own cause with that behaviour.
ty for that James, restored a lil faith in the free press.
I do like the girl's comment "We're cleaning up the city of homophobia" just after the fella don's his bandito mask lol.
on the other hand, the interviewer works for the Irish Times, did this make the Times, or was he forced to tweet it...
I heard about Conor Pope's intervention on Twitter. Can't say I saw anything in the IT in terms of an article, but there was a letter on the topic in last Saturday's Irish Times (May 2). Just did a google search out of curiosity, vandalised+referendum+posters and there are a fair few items on it across a range of titles.
sorry i dont know a lot, yes and no for what?
the legalization of p* enlargements in ireland they all have tiny d*s
Irish national vote on gay marriage
cheers
😁😁hi hi hi😁^
Yes but in the end, history will eventually show those who voted no as victims of the time who were still wrong. Democracy did, after all, keep in place segregation of race in the US for a century. Had there been a national vote on segregation, I would've been glad to have seen people destroying the "No" posters. They would be encouraging inequality. We accept that now.
Let the opponent speak even if what they have to say is detrimental to society. I say it's a flaw of democracy personally. I don't think the government should have to step in and eradicate negative features of society. I think the people should be able to do it themselves, though the masses aren't ready for that responsibility.
Without proper unbiased education we need a government to protect all sides of an argument, because the weaker in numbers could be the right one. The problem is when the equal protection of the wrong side leads to more harm in the long run.
At the end of the day though, at least it's not the government tearing up those posters or No voters would have a legitimate uphill battle ahead. (Though a state-socialist would argue the government should be the one doing the tearing. lol)
An environment where groups are allowed to silence each other is the lodestone totalitarian governments build themselves on.
I don't see what the gay community is so worried about anyway. This is Ireland, if we vote wrong on the referendum they'll just make us do it over again anyway lol
The price of democracy is having to allow everyone a say without being bullied, even if their views are heinous (not just talking about gay marriage here). The irony has always been that a right wing dictatorship would not allow freedom of speech, but a democracy allows those same right wingers to speak as they feel.
Best modern example to Liams argument is Egypt where "democracy spoke" and elected a Muslim Brotherhood government. Yet the MB do not believe in democracy as they follow the will of Allah.
Democracy is a tool to some.
"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance"
I think this is what he was talking about.
just use stronger materials in your NO poster sweet I doubt they will be able to tear it up then.
^ lol problem solved. A win for democracy.
is rtk implying that gay ppl are weak?
That's racists.
Or sexist.
Or maybe Phobic?
tbh idk anymore. these days I assume I'm offending somebody just ordering a BigMac.
since i bought a shotgun i lost my fear of gay people.
Everyone should have a say.
Here in the US it is illegal to interfere with political signs. It is a crime. Of course that does not stop some people but since just about everyone has a camera at all times now a days many get caught. Not all but many. Signs usually don't get messed with. At least not around here anyways.
Hehe! At the moment, in Mexico there is a whole civil movement of pulling off all political propaganda of all parties. People are so sick of political parties having a huge amount of tax payers money to just splurge everywhere (they are really everywhere) with signs that just end up in the garbage. It is posed as a civil movement against all politicians and the corruption they all show and participate in. But yea, it also is a crime here.
I think the US holds the title for money wasted on propaganda that no one remembers the day after election day.
I think currently the majority of the American economy is money spent by politicians to get re elected.
Yeah, but I think Mexico is close in that ladder... and the per capita tax is much lower, therefore, proportionally...
All in all, I must say, it is the most psychologically refreshing thing I have done in a long time.
Well... as much as I am for the yes, in any country, I do see your point.
Which then raises the question: why tell your daughter to not send the pictures? Maybe some reporters would take notice and have similar idea as what you pose...
Where I live the opposite happened...over a few nights all the Yes posters disappeared and no Sweet it did not make the news.
So maybe if we all agree taking posters down is wrong (and actually illegal) and move on pls.
Do they even have news where you live? 😁
But yes, it's bad news no matter who does it, that was the point.
Full support and its true....it happens everywhere, not only in Ireland. When they organise a parade here they march through the town dressed as priests or someone else they hate.....mocking the majority's holy things...
voted.
I believe you're wrong in saying "Get some pics of 'Yes' placards being treated like this and you've got yourself a primetime slot".
I also have seen a picture of teenagers in Dublin, going viral on facebook taking down a No poster, on each others shoulders. I haven't seen any viral pictures of Yes ones being taken down, but that's probably just what I see from my circle of facebook friends.
I have seen "No" posters disappear or be vandalised, and I have also seen "Yes" posters disappear or be vandalised.
There is actually one Yes poster vandalised two lamp posts away from my local Garda station. Still there a week later.
I do agree that both sides should have a say.
I don't think they were right in removing all the No posters going down whichever street you were taking about, even though the No posters have no relevance to the referendum because they're using children as a tactic, when it has nothing to do with children.
very true Tara.
The Yes poster that is written up as an 'anti-austerity' referendum is just as misleading.
