Haft Sīn

Haft Sīn (هفت سین) or the seven 'S's is a major tradition of Nowruz. The haft sin table includes seven specific items starting with the letter 'S' or Sīn (س) in Persian alphabet). The items symbolically correspond to seven creations and holy immortals protecting them. The Haft Sin has evolved over time, but has kept its symbolism. Traditionally, families attempt to set as beautiful a Haft Sīn table as they can, as it is not only of traditional and spiritual value, but also noticed by visitors during Nowruzi visitations and is a reflection of their good taste.
Haft sin table:

sabzeh - wheat, barley or lentil sprouts growing in a dish - symbolizing rebirth
samanu - a sweet pudding made from wheat germ - symbolizing affluence
senjed - the dried fruit of the oleaster tree - symbolizing love
sīr - garlic - symbolizing medicine
sīb - apples - symbolizing beauty and health
somaq - sumac berries - symbolizing (the color of) sunrise
serkeh - vinegar - symbolizing age and patience

Other items on the table may include:

Sonbol - Hyacinth (plant)
Sekkeh - Coins - representative of wealth
traditional Iranian pastries such as baghlava, toot, naan-nokhodchi
Aajeel - dried nuts, berries and raisins
lit candles (enlightenment and happiness)
a mirror (symbolizing cleanness and honesty)
decorated eggs, sometimes one for each member of the family (fertility)
a bowl of water with goldfish (life within life, and the sign of Pisces which the sun is leaving)
rosewater, believed to have magical cleansing powers
the national colours, for a patriotic touch
a holy book (e.g., the Avesta, Qur'an, Bible, Torah, or Kitáb-i-Aqdas) and/or a poetry book (almost always either the Shahnama or the Divan of Hafez)

هفت‌سین سفره‌ای است که ایرانیان هنگام نوروز می‌‌آرایند. آنچه که در این سفره قرار می‌گیرد، باید دارای هفت خصوصیت زیر باشد:

1.پارسی باشد؛
2.با بند واژه‌ی «س» آغاز شود؛
3.ریشه‌ی گیاهی داشته باشد؛
4.خوردنی باشد؛
5.اسم مرکب نباشد؛
6.برای بدن سودمند باشد؛
بنابراین هر آنچه که دارای این ویژگی‌ها نباشد - اگر چه با بندواژه‌‌ی «س» هم آغاز شده باشد - نمی‌توان جزء هفت‌ سین به حسابش آورد. در زبان پارسی، تنها هفت چیز هستند که این ویژگی‌ها را دارا هستند:

1.سیر : به نام و عنوان اهورامزدا
2.سیب: به نام و عنوان سپندارمذ (اسفند
3.سبزی: به نام فرشته‌‌ی اردیبهشت
4.سنجد : به نام فرشته‌ی خرداد
5.سرکه: به نام فرشته‌ی امرداد
6.سمنو : به نام فرشته‌ی شهریور
7.سماغ: به نام فرشته‌ی بهمن

هرچند که در سفرهٔ هفت سین باید به هرحال هفت جزء که با آوای «سین» آغاز می‌شوند (نمادی از «سپنتا») چیده شود، ولی برای زینت و چیدمان دلپذیرتر سفرهٔ هفت سین، تقریباً همهٔ خانواده‌های ایرانی اجزاء دیگری هم در سفره می‌چینند و در آرایش و رنگامیزی سفره شان نهایت خوش سلیقگی را اعمال می‌کنند.

آینه و کتابی مقدس در کنار آن هم از اجزائی است که تقریباً در هر سفرهٔ هفت سینی چیده می‌شود. برخی بر این باورند که سکه که نماد «دارایی» وآب که نماد «پاکی و روشنایی» است بهتر است در کنار هم قرار گیرند و سکه را درون ظرفی از آب سر سفره می‌گذارند.
