FIITS: Happy Channukkah, Merry Christmas, and Crazy Kwanzaa!

Day 400, 00:34 Published in Australia Australia by Leon Alston

Well, with all the Christian Merry Christmas' going around, I thought that I would inform everyone else of the other two main celebrations that are happening at the same time.

Happy Channukkah, 'ch' sounding like you've got a fur ball in your throat, is the Jewish celebration of this time of year. Channukkah is the 'Festival of Lights', where we celebrate the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. To rededicate the Temple, it would take, among other things, an oil light to be burning for 8 days solid. We only had oil enough to keep it burning one day, but thanks to a miracle worked by Ha Shem, the oil lasted the whole 8 days and some. So, we remember this and commemorate it. Having said that have a look at the link, scoff some latkes, spin the dreidel and win a packet, get drunk on fellowship, and celebrate like the Temple will be rebuilt tomorrow.

Kwanzaa, is another one that is rarely heard, but we in Australia do not have the opportunity to often see this in action. That said, keep this one also in mind as we celebrate this time of jubilee. Kwanzaa is a new celebration that was formed in 1966 to give an option to the Negro and African population of America and Africa. It is a time of no cultural significance, but designed to promote a social awareness and connectivity. So, if you want to know more, check out the link.

Okay, so I've had my rant and rave, keep up the good work and let us celebrate in our own individual way. If you know of any other celebrations that occur at this time of year, tell us in your comment below. Oh, and remember to support your congress candidates on the 25th of December.
