Editorial | Ariel to RP: Proposal System Will Slow Down Congress

The following was a reader's response to blitzwithlimes's article, entitled "Proposal System + Gifting Program + Other stuff", which appeared 2 days ago in PhilChron. It is signed by one Ariel David Buena (printed with permission):

"I have some reservations about the "Proposal System"/referendum system.

"Although it sounds innovative because it will "allow our non-congress members to partake in the government", we must recognize that not all citizens want to partake in government, particularly in legislative matters.

"The implementation of this idea runs the risk of stalling the ratification of valuable legislation just because it was unable to gain enough, if any, public support after it was published as a newspaper article.

"I believe that if a piece of legislation is truly worthy of being ratified in congress, the author of the bill will surely publish it in his paper to gather the support and/or input of his constituents and fellow lawmakers.

"By this act alone, and the consequent commentary thereafter, one can easily gauge the value of a proposal. And "by their fruits, you will know them".

"Running proposals through another empirical method of "measuring" public opinion before it's allowed to land on the desks of Congressman risks strangling potentially beneficial legislation amidst a maze of bureaucratic red tape.

"Besides, one of the reasons why citizens vote Congressmen into office to formulate, weigh, measure and promulgate legislation is so that they won't have to go through the trouble of doing it themselves!"
