Distant connenctions
Quicksilver
Letters and PMs fly on cables, soar on waves and reach their destination far-far away...continents and cultures separate people, alliances and wars make them stand on opposing halves of some battlefield, takeovers and intrigues make them and their countries enemies... but should they hate each other? Is it required in this game to spit contempt an enmity on the other? Shouldn't, couldn't we be enemies and friends at the same time?
To fight a battle requires no hate. To win or lose demands no loathing. If I so wish, I can plan a teribble and cunning attack on you, but hate would only cloud my eyes and impair my judgement. I talk to people. I talk them and listen them and see their viewpoints, their reasons, their moods. So I write letters and answer them, and look up places I have never been or will probably never go, and learn a few expressions in an exotic language, to feel the taste of the words in my head, and I write my articles and comments to others'...
Making connections. Provoking at first if I need to, but getting others to be interested in me, in the connection. For connection is lifeblood, communication is a tool, and it leads to ties and those make bonds and undetectably they make friends. And friends form communities, they make fellowships and gather even more friends.... by the means of a war game. Because they understand that it is not necessary to hate each other, just because they belong to an other alliance, see the eWorld in a different light for it, and believe in a whole world of a different things.
So I keep going around and making connections. The world seems so small these times... a PM reaches me almost immediately it is sent, the person who is sending it is not far behind. And it can be a good thing or a bad thing but that can be said about the whole world. So, make connections! Talk! Listen! It costs absolutely nothing to stop for a second and listen to what your enemy is telling - instead of refuting it straight away. You can still meet him next day on the field of battle. The two is not inconsistent.
Ezért aztán keressük a kapcsolatokat!

Indeed! This is the way to build up a society. To listen, to talk, to communicate and to get respect for each other. To be friend and enemy on the same time. Than we know the facts, than we can react properly. Than we can go beyond propaganda and flaming.
That way eRepublik would be far more interesting. That is something we all want and deserve.
Very well writen and I agree with you, it's a shame that not many people understand that.
Voted.
Many people still think that befriending an enemy is somehow a betrayal. And I do acknowledge that it requires care and sometimes even tact to avoid to actually leak information (or leak just the chosen bits...). But it makes the dance even more interesting and society even more complex. 🙂
I can for example argue away the whole day with hardliner takeoverists and be happy about doing it - even though I absolutely condemn this method that they employ here. 🙂
PM system - Connecting People (shameless Nokia advertisement)
Intricately made, given the simplest of tools at our disposal. Almost a beautiful musical sonata within itself.
I've heard of your name before, Quicksilver. Many good words follow you. I hope to read more from you in the coming future. 🙂
"...by the means of a war game."
So, it is a war game after all? 😉
Blue Holt: thanks, it is good to hear that my word are remembered by some. 🙂
Pristanda: for the sake of the argument it is. 😛
keep up the good fight Quicksilver
Right. "Social capital" is one of the most interesting and seemingly overlooked features of the game. As are the ideals of friendly competition, good sportsmanship, and respectful disagreement.
Awesome article. Is all your stuff this good? It's beautiful.
Very very well written. Absolutely voted and ABSOLUTELY subscribed
Great article
Thanks folks, I am really glad you noticed and enjoyed it. 🙂
If I may, I would like to show you this piece:
http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/chances-and-choices-731345/1/20
It is about the Norwegian-Russian affair.
Great article. I agree with you about this and your words are eloquently written. One can passionately argue their point and still respect their opponents. This is one of the things that happens in RL politics that I've always hated and 1 of the things that attracted me to eRep - to be able to make connections around the world outside of the flaws of RL politics. Voted!
Hmmm
Nice hand-writing 😁
I can see you too are evolving Quick 🙂
[be honest: you wouldn't have written down such things a year ago...]
sigh...
Harif... no I probably woudn't have...
[but I can always trust you to point things out for me... 😛]
