Disharmony in the Mediterranean Alliance? Italy, Hungary, Canada align with rival alliances; Spain angered

ROME, Italy -- The Italian government moved Monday to enact mutual protection pacts with Pakistan and Indonesia, two of the largest member nations of the Formidable International Security Treaty (FIST), a military alliance which has often been at odds with the Mediterranean Alliance, of which Italy is a member nation.

The Hungarian government also moved Monday to reach an agreement with Romania, a member state of the Northern Alliance, after rumors of war sparked by a proclamation in Romanian state news spread throughout the international community. Romania has been an ally of Canada, a Mediterranean Alliance member state (despite that nation being entirely disconnected from the Mediterranean, both geographically and culturally) since April.

According to a report in Spanish media, the present charter signed by the member states of the Mediterranean Alliance does not allow member states to align themselves to non-member nations with large militaries. Though Italy recently proposed an amendment to the Mediterranean Alliance charter allowing such alliances, it was rejected by that alliance's governing body, including the Spanish government. Spainish media labeled the posturing of Italy and Hungary an attempt to ensure the safety of Italian and Hungarian interests instead of the interests of the Mediterranean Alliance as a whole.
