Defense Shield: where countries stand right now
Yfke van de Zand
I particularly liked the introduction of Defense Shields over the last national relative damage contest.
Just to refresh some minds, this is how the shield is used by countries when they are attacked.
They divide the remaining shield protection by the number or regions held at the beginning of a campaing. That will be the total defense shield available for that campaign.
This has a very important implication: only countries with just one region can exhaust their shields to zero, because any countries with 2 or more regions held at all times will never have the remaining damage allocated in full (since it will be divided at least by 2)
The implications are important, as they introduce an interesting twist: small countries (holding few regions) benefit much more for defense shields, as they get to divide the total available damage by a smaller number. This makes surprise attacks against small countries where the attackers are less willing to commit in full force much more expensive in terms of damage.
As of day 2110, this is the remaining Defense Shield damage protection perc country, measured in million damage hits

Countries not listed have no Defense Shield protection left, having used it all already, or didn't earn any on last contest.
What will be interesting to follow is what will happen when the next contest comes around. If countries can sum up damage shields from different contests, some smaller countries can start to mount some serious defense shields that might act as deterrent against aggressive medium-sized neighbors. Or big eRep bullies might just decide the billions of damage needed to overcome shields are not worth on their military plans.

Great article Yfke!
Quick counting tells me there are already 12 countries without a shield.
Thanks for summing it up! This means we need at least 2 regions, for our shield not to deplete. (too fast)
No matter the number of regions, if they neighbour the same hostile country, probably both will be wiped.
Actually 1 region is in that case probably better since that will give us the full shield as protection, instead of twice half the shield.
So either 1 region and an airstrike to the end of the world, or just 1 region...
but, the only sure way to loose the shield completely 😒
Only 0 regions can prevent losing the shield.
In the end all countries will lose this shield...
Even Poland will one day be wiped.
And if some enemy country wants to destroy our shield, they could just RW one of our regions and wipe us again.
The shield is nothing special. It's just a defense mechanism. Poland won't like having to do 6 billion extra damage in a campaign for a region that's worthless to them.
If the shields are here to stay, meaning we'll get more shield next tournament and it sums up with the old shield, then it might be a good strategy for small countries with just 2-3 regions: put all effort to get extra shield, so that bigger countries won't go out of their way in a campaign to drop several billion damages just to get some region they don't actually need (in our case: Southern, Eastern and Northern NL).
Very useful for me thank you!!!
