Day 784: Phoenix moves to free Slovenia

SUMMARY

The major Alliances have for the most part been treading water since the fall of Germany, while the tactical situation is being assessed. The only major advance that has recently occurred has been the liberation of Israeli territory by Greek/EDEN forces from Turkey. Phoenix has been scrambling to contain the EDEN offensive in Europe by bogging down Spain in France and breaking the Serbian land bridge to Asia in the face of a Romanian invasion which coincided with the fall of Bulgaria. They have also launched a joint ground invasion and resistance battle in the former Slovenia.


EUROPEAN THEATER

With the pause in EDEN’s operations tempo since the Battle of Saarland, Phoenix has been able to focus its efforts on the few fronts that remain active. Greek forces had made some initial gains in the Mediterranean Coast of Turkey, but a swift Hungarian wall building effort has put the defensive barrier of this region well out of reach of all but the most determined counter tanking effort. Greece has been trying to breach Turkey for weeks now, but it is clear that Phoenix views Anatolia as a critical region. If Turkey falls, Greece and Romania will have Europe walled off from South Asia, and could conceivably invade Iran with the goal of getting Serbia out of Pakistan. Whenever EDEN decides to resume major offensives in other sectors, Phoenix will have some hard choices to make with regards to Turkey.

In France, Spain has become bogged down in a Phoenix backed resistance campaign. Phoenix forces were able to save France from a wipe out by spamming resistance battles and tanking down one of the regions before the final French region in Corsica was taken by the Spanish. In response, Spain has halted its offensive against the French while it deals with the Resistance battles. Poland has likewise done the same with its occupied regions. Resistance wars can only be launched once in a 24 hour period, and the likely Spanish/Polish strategy here is to deal with the spammed resistance battles before moving to wipe out France. Normally, this would be an opportunity for France to counterattack while the enemy is distracted. Unfortunately the remaining French territory has been surrounded by Poland, a country France does not have an open war with. Even if France coughed up the Gold to declare war on the Poles, Spain would just region swap and attack before the declaration was passed. At this point France is in an unwinnable position and is simply fighting for time, though the longer they hold out the greater the chances are for Spain and Poland to make a mistake they can take advantage of. Perhaps this is what they are counting on.

In Central Europe, Hungary has launched an offensive against Croatia in Prekmurje in conjunction with resistance wars in the occupied Slovenian territory. This is a major effort that gives Hungary numerous chances to free Slovenia. The battle in Prekmurje, the capital of the former Slovenia will distract the vast majority of Croatia’s damage and allow Phoenix Mobile Forces to tank down the walls in the resistance battles. Croatia would be advised to leave the defense of Prekmurje to its MPP’s while they build the walls up in the resistance wars. Keeping the walls too low could expose Croatia to a Phoenix tanking effort in all three regions. This is a major effort by the enemy and we can expect them to already be preparing to move their mobile troops out. Restoring Slovenia would give Phoenix some much needed good news and provide a major moral boost. It will also bring further distraction to EDEN just as many of the countries Hungary has been using to distract damage have been disappearing.


FINAL ANALYSIS

Today’s major engagement will be the Hungarian effort to free Slovenia. This will be an effort by the entire Phoenix alliance, and the movement of Russian, Serbian and other tanks to Hungary and Croatia will be a major indicator that this operation is serious. The most likely course of action for Phoenix is the Hungarians focusing exclusively on Prekmurje while Allied Mobile troops move to Croatia and ninja tank the walls in the other Slovenian resistance wars. EDEN’s options in this situation are to either go all out to help Croatia control Slovenia, or else take advantage of the Phoenix Alliances focus and launch a major operation in a different sector. In the case of the latter, Hungary will be forced to choose between Slovenia or containing the new threat from EDEN. In this situation, both sides stand to win or lose something.
