Curiosities about Austria

As most of you know,I am not a RL Austrian,but as I am quite interested in the country itself,I decided to make an article about some curious things of Austria that I found interesting and as the current situation in the eWorld is quite boring calm this is the most ineteresting thing I can write about right now.

Austrian Flag


The Austrian flag is one of the oldest national flag in the world. It dates from 1191, when Duke Leopold V fought in the Battle of Acre during the Third Crusade.:

According to legend,Duke Leopold V of Austria after a fierce battle,saw his white surcoat was completely drenched in blood. When he removed his belt, the cloth underneath was untouched by it, revealing the combination of red-white-red. So taken was he by this singular sight that he adopted the colors and scheme as his banner.
The second oldest flag is the danish one.



Oldest Zoo in the World

The oldest zoological garden in the world is the Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna, founded in 1752.
The still preserved buildings of the baroque era, which have been complemented in the last years by elements of modern zoo architecture, convey still a good impression of the 18th century menagerie-buildings after the Versailles model.



Oldest Restaurant in the World

Founded in 803 as Stiftskeller St. Peter is the world's oldest inn/restaurant still in operation, and the oldest company in Europe.
St Peter Stiftskeller mentioned for the first time by the scholar Alcuin, a follower of Emperor Charlemagne, thus regarded as the oldest restaurant in Europe



Porsche

The founder of the sports car company 'Porsche' Ferdinand Porsche was born in Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Czech Republic).He also designed the Volkswagen and was named as best automobile engineer of the XX century.



First Woman Nobel


The Austrian novelist and radical pacifist Bertha von Suttner was the first woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize,in 1905.



3rd Highest Peak in Europe

The Grossglockner,is the 3rd highest peak in Europe and is located in the Austrian Alps,also it's the 2nd mountain in prominence and it's ski station is a typical finish in world known cycling races as the Giro of Italy or the Tour de France.
