Communiqué #2: Fetish for Chains

Day 1,291, 07:31 Published in Spain United Kingdom by Johnobrow

This series of communiqués from beyond the Rapture continues with a tale of fetishism, commodification and SEX.

It turns out the thing that traps us in the void here is the same thing that traps us in the void there, in "Real Life": fetishism. For some of you this will conjure up images of all sorts of kinky shit. Good, but that's not what I'm talking about when I say fetishism - keep that thought in mind though, I'll be returning to it later.

So what do I mean by fetishism? Fetishism, as I use it here, refers to the domination of social relations by constructs that are generally contrary to our own best interests, or better yet, to our intrinsic 'species-being'; our human nature. Fetishism represents a sort of addiction. It is more easily understood if you look at it in terms of alienation from ourselves, from real life. It most commonly applies to constructs such as commodities, material objects, but just as equally applies to constructs like the nation-state. In eRepublik fetishised forms of social relations manifests itself in a vast number of ways. 'We', and I use that term loosely, are here because of this fetishism. We are here because we have a fetish for what eRepublik is, what it offers; a way of filling the void created by fetishism in "Real Life". By mimicking "Real Life" to such a great degree, eRepublik offers us all the fetishism of "Real Life" whilst adding an even greater fetishism, a fetish for "Real Life" itself - why else would so many struggle so hard to recreate "Real life" here in eRep? (See the grand state superstructures and titles such as "Prime Minister" for a prime example of this.) What we ultimately have a fetish for then is our chains, the chains that keep us here despite the futility of it all, despite the boredom, despite the absence of real life. (This article discusses fetishism in the context of eRep further: http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/the-nation-of-the-commodity-bourgeois-nationalist-ideology-1471598/1/20)

Okay, so what the hell really is this real life that fetishism alienates us from? What's the secret? Alright, let's get down and dirty in the specifics.

I intend to cover several aspects of real life in this series. It will be by no means an exhaustive list, it will just be some basics to give you a good idea so you can start experimenting yourself in exploring outside the void.

Since we're talking about fetishes anyway, let's start with sex. Sex is real life. There are few things more primitively desirable than sex and that is what real life is all about; the fulfillment of basic human desires. However, sex is not untainted by spectacle. Sex can apparently also be a route straight back into the void. For you see, sex has been commodified. Our basic human passionate desire is being denied us and we are being sold its representation in its place in the form of pornography, advertisement, commodities and prudish conservative values. Fuck them. Ignore them. Negate them. Blank them out. Don't consume sex, have sex. Replace your virtual and spectacular chains with real actual chains - here's a useful guide in DIY BDSM: http://wearethepaper.org/2011/03/23/eros/

Fuck the system!

P.S. Some will tell you my return has something to do with a weed drought. This is a counter-revolutionary bourgeois lie. Pay it no attention, comrades.
