Coffee Time

Coffee Time

James, Yusef, and Jacob
sat at their favorite table in the back
of the coffee house on Joralamon street.
The late afternoon summer heat outside
was filled with movement…of cars, of people,
of dusty dirty pigeons.
The noise and the heat was baffled
by the darkened glass window
and the low hum of conversation inside,
sounding like a sleepy hive.
They spoke of home and family
and their plans for summer vacation.
At times, they would talk about
politics, religion, and the current conflicts;
but always there was restraint then.
Each thought (separately and secretly): “If only….”
Near by, in one of the other
eleven dimensions,
three friends rested, each in his own paradise.
Mohammad, Jesus, and Abraham
laughed as they peeked into the coffee shop.
“Flesh of my flesh and blood of my blood”
remarked Abraham to the other two.
“how brief the life of these children!
They see themselves as masters of their lives,
but they are less than the smoke from a candle.”
“Each thinks they know us best.”
said Jesus,
“The companionship of the three, and the love
between the families will outlast them.”
“The justice and might of God
shall not change with time.”
concluded Mohammad
…and since there is no time in paradise,
all this existed, but only within time.
