Part V: With an Irresistible Bottom and a Border to Be Crossed.

The pair followed the path as it twisted gently through the soft rolling hills. Sonja led the way, humming softly as she walked. At first, Andrew tried to focus on keeping his bearings so he could find his way back when he needed to, but after a mile or so, he found that his gaze was constantly drawn to the swishing white dress in front of him. The tick-tock of her hips was almost hypnotic as she moved with a quiet rhythm.

“We are getting close to the border. Once we leave this soft area, things may get a bit difficult,” she said.

“Right,” he said with a somewhat distant tint to his voice.

Sonja stopped and spun on him quickly, surprisingly. “Were you not paying attention to what I said?”

Andrew stammered. “I was. I was. You said… I heard what you said.”

A single eyebrow arched up high. “You were staring at my bottom, weren’t you?”

“Wha-what? No. I most certainly was not.” He looked for something to focus attention on other than her, but other than the hills, there was nothing.

“Are you sure?” she asked. Then with a quick glance over her shoulder to take a look for herself, she said, “I was certainly trying to get your attention. You say it didn’t work?” She looked back at him with a look that betrayed nothing. “What were you so distracted with then?”

Andrew’s mind spun quickly trying to lock on to something that could pull him from this embarrassment she was forcing on him.

“I was… of course, you know…” and then he had it. “Wings. I was looking to see if you had wings.” He blurted out, but the reaction she gave him was not at all what he was expecting.

“Mr. Andrew!!” she said placing her hand over her mouth and turning her head away from him. “We’ve just met.”

“What?” he said, slowly loosing any grip of understanding he might have had.

She was blushing. Her milky skin slowly flushing a light pink. “Do you think I’d go around with my wings flapping for any one to just oogle?”

He took a step towards her, but she backed away. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know. I just thought…”
She turned and started walking again. “You thought that I’d just show you my wings.” There was a strained wounded quality to her accusation as she walked away from him and Andrew followed, trying to make sense of how badly he had just blundered and trying to think of a way to apologies
.
Sonja on the other hand was smiling, trying not to laugh. It seemed to her, that this particular mush was going to be more fun than she had thought. She wondered how shocked he was going to be when they got into the Kingdom Proper and there were wings everywhere.

They traveled in silence, Andrew stunned with embarrassment and Sonja pleased with herself, until suddenly she stopped. She pointed to several rocks stacked on top of each other.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” she asked.

“Do what? We are going to the palace to find my wife. What else are we supposed to be doing?” he asked.

Sonja closed her eyes and shook her head. “You really are a poor mush.” Taking a deep breath she continued. “You came from your realm, your world, whatever you want to call it through a gate my father opened.”

“It was in the middle of a stone circle.”

She smiled very faintly. “It could have been in the middle of your mother’s kitchen. There are no rules for that. The gates never take you where you are going. They just drop you off at the edge. These hills, the little tree you found me in, all on the edge.”

Andrew turned and looked back the way they came. It was plain, boring hills with the lone path cutting through them. “On the edge of what?”

“The edge of everything, or of everything you need to worry about.”

Andrew felt his head starting to hurt again. “So, what is the difference between the edge and everything else?”

“I think the real difference for us is that here on the edge, there is not a thing out here interested in us or what we are doing.”

Andrew pointed to the stone pile. “And on the other side of that?”

Sonja grinned, “We might draw a bit of attention. You cause you’re a mush and me cause I’m very cute and people are drawn to me.”

He couldn’t help himself. He smiled back at her. “I need to save my wife,” he said. “I don’t know what kind of things are going to pay attention to me, but it really doesn’t matter. I need to find her.”

“Alright then,” she said turning to lead the way again. “Just make sure you are watching for trouble and not watching my bottom.”

“I was not watching your bottom!” Andrew protested and fell in behind her.

“I’m pretty sure your were. I’m pretty irresistible,” she said.

And they bantered their way from the edge and across the border into everything.
