Epilogue: The rest of the way

Rian bolted up waving his arms. “I think you cheated with the Banshees,” he complained.

His little sister Nessa frowned and snuggled up close into her mother’s arms countering his criticism, “Well, I think it was a wonderful story.”

Her mother bent down and kissed the top of her head. “Thank you, hon.”

“But da,” Rian charged to his father side, “don’t you think she cheated with the Banshees? They didn’t fight or nothing.”

He laughed. “She certainly did take a few liberties with the construction of it, but your mother promised a story with a Banshee in it. You received a story with a Banshee in it.”

Rian frowned, his young mind reconsidering. “Well, the Pooka fight was good and I did quite like Raven. He reminded me of your friend.”

“My friend is a bit more annoying than the one in the story I think.”

“He most certainly is,” his wife replied.

“Mother, did Sonja and Andrew live happily ever after? They must have right?” Nessa asked.

She squeezed the child tightly and smiled. “They did sometimes. Other times, not so much, but those are tales for another time and really, ever after is such a long, long time.”

“They are certainly still trying though,” her father said winking.

“Will I ever find a mush of my own?” Nessa whined softly.

Father picked Rian up and looked down at his daughter. “You, sweetheart, will find the greatest mush of all time. I am certain.”

Nessa smiled at him.

“And as for you, my boy.” He pressed his son’s nose lightly with his index finger. “Shall we race to the palace?”

Rian squirmed out of his fathers grasp and in an instant the young boy was a small jet black raven flying toward the palace in the distance.

“Be careful, you two!” she called after them. “Don’t do anything stupid.”
Andrew looked over his shoulder and winked at her. “I promised didn’t I? For the rest of the way, no more stupid stuff.”

A flutter of wings and black feathers and he was right behind his son.

“Aye,” Sonja replied, smiling with green eyes crinkling. “For the rest of the way.”
