Chapter One Rude Awakening Part Sixteen

Day 1,015, 18:54 Published in Philippines Philippines by Josie Brooks
“What did you think you were doing?” her father’s voice boomed at her, jolting her rudely awake.

She looked up at him through bleary eyes and squinted past him to see the results of her tantrum last night. Velvet and lace was all over the floor, pearls and gems scattered about like so many worthless pebbles

“Did you even think of me before you did all of this?” his arm waved about to indicate the room behind him.

“Father, I…….” her apology stuck in her throat as she saw the absolute fury twisting his features. He was hardly recognizable as the man who had always been so easily wrapped around her young finger.

“Of course you didn’t think of me. You have always only thought of yourself! You are a spoiled, selfish little brat and I am here to say, my little princess, that this is the end of it! You hear me! It is over. You are not going to be indulged anymore.” Lifting a large scrap of purple silk from the floor he brandished it at her like a weapon. “This is the last time your whims will cost me a single copper.”

Tossing the silk at his daughter, he walked over to her desk and picked up her scrying bowl. Made of a single piece of volcanic glass, the precious bowl had been a gift to her from her teacher at her last birthday.

Passing the bowl from hand to hand, he came back before the bed and faced his daughter. “Your beloved tutor has already been fired. He has left and you will never see him again. As for all of this magic stuff, you will pack it all up and leave it outside your door. It will all be disposed of. As for your behavior as of late,” holding out the bowl with one hand, he said “this is your doing, not mine.” And let the bowl go.

Her scream of pain and denial tore through his heart as the precious glass bowl shattered on the stone at his feet. “You will begin behaving like a lady from now on. Your disrespect and disregard for your place in this world ends now. I hope you understand why I had to do this.”

Astra looked up at her father with eyes that were empty, tears flowing silently down her cheeks. “Well,” he said, “you will someday.”

Standing from the bed, Astra walked to her desk, the crunch of glass and red footprints left behind proving that she didn’t avoid the glass.

“Take care of her Emily.” Her father left the room, unable to take her blank stare any longer.

Rushing to the young lady’s side, Emily led her to a chair and sat her down. “I will take care of everything for you miss, don’t you worry. Now, wait right here while I get some water.” Her heart ached at the dead stare Astra gave her before she left the room.

Astra felt nothing. Not the cuts on her feet, nor the tears wetting her cheeks. She had never been so empty before. As if her soul was hidden in the bowl, when it shattered she had felt something in her break. The color leaked out of the room and her body went numb. Her breathing was shallow and her heartbeat echoed in ears that registered nothing else. All she could hear was that shattering sound, over and over again. The sound of her heart breaking.
