At least six Britons dead as Malaysia Airlines MH17 plane is 'shot down' killing 295

A MALAYSIAN Airlines passenger plane with 295 people on board has been shot down over wartorn Ukraine today.

Pro-Russian insurgents or the authorities have been blamed for blasting the commercial jet out of the sky by launching a ground to air missile.

All passengers are confirmed dead and dozens of bodies are scattered over the ground, up to nine miles from the crash site.

At least six Britons are among the dead.

The twisted, mangled wreckage of the Boeing 777 is still smouldering but the black box has been found.

Flight MH17 was travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur at an altitude of 33,000feet when it was hit.

This evening a news conference was held at Schiphol Airport where the plane took off and it was revealed the nationalities of the passengers.

Jos Nijhuis, CEO of Schiphol Airport, sai😛 "The nationality of the crew are all Malaysians.

"Our main priority at the moment is to look after this people who are suffering and that is our greatest attention at this point in time.

"The nationalities as we know at this time - 154 Dutch passengers were onboard the aircraft, 27 Australian passengers, 23 Malaysian, 11 Indonesian, six from the UK, four from Germany, four from Belgium, three from the Philippines and one Canadian.

"The rest we have not yet identified the nationality. We are in the process of verifying the data we have got."

Mr Nijhuis added that arrangements will be made to fly the victims' relatives from Amsterdam to Kiev.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has called for an international investigation to establish what to happened to flight MH17.

Speaking at the Foreign Office following emergency talks with ministers and officials, Mr Hammond said they were still working through the passenger data to establish how many Britons there were.

He sai😛 "I'm deeply shocked by this appalling incident and I send my heartfelt condolences to all those who may have lost family and friends. We're determined to get to the bottom of understanding what has happened here.

"As yet we do not have any definitive information about how this incident occurred and I don't want to speculate at this stage.

"We believe that there must be a UN-led international investigation of the facts."

He said that Britain was prepared to make Air Accident Investigation Branch assets and specialists available to assist such an investigation.

American President Barack Obama, who described the crash as a "terrible tragedy", held talks today with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

While Mr Obama's deputy Joe Biden said the incident was "not an accident" and described the plane as having been "blown out of the sky."

However, Mr Biden cautioned that White House were still seeking details about the cause of the crash.

The MH17 crash marks the second tragedy involving Malaysia Airlines this year.

In March flight MH370 carrying 239 people went missing and despite an extensive search not a single trace of it has been found.

The country's government later said they believed the plane had crashed and all aboard MH370 were dead.

Ukraine and Russia have been waging a separatist conflict in the Donetsk region, where the flight plummeted today.

At least four Ukrainian jets have been hit by rebels wanting to be part of Russia in the past week, leading to questions as to why a commercial jet was allowed to fly through the warzone.

Ukraine were quick to blame either Moscow or pro-Russian separatists for bringing down the jet and an urgent inquiry has been launched into the doomed journey.

"MH-17 is not an incident or catastrophe, it is a terrorist attack," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko tweeted.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, posted on Facebook today that flight MH17 had been shot down near the Russian border.

He wrote: "A civilian airliner travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has just been shot down by a Buk anti-aircraft system.

"280 passengers and 15 crew have been killed."

Ukrainian military analyst Dmitry Tymchuk adde😛 “Ukrainian troops from the anti-terrorist operation forces do not have air defences in this zone.

However air defence are constantly used in this region by pro-Russian terrorists and Russian armed forces.”

However Russian state media labelled the accusations “absurd.”

The jet had set off from Amsterdam’s Schipol airport en-route to Kuala Lumpur at midday local time and came down 50 miles before it would have entered Russian air space.

It crashed in the village of Grabovo, near the city of Donetsk which is currently under the control of pro-Russian rebels who want the region to join Moscow in a similar way to the annexation of Crimea by Moscow earlier in the year.

Malaysia Airlines tweeted that they had lost contact with MH17 and its last known location was over Ukrainian airspace.

"I was working in the field on my tractor when I heard the sound of a plane and then a bang," one local man at Grabovo said.

"Then I saw the plane hit the ground and break in two. There was thick black smoke."

One horrific account said bodies had fallen out of the sky.

Villager Aleks Noit adde😛 “Wreckage and bodies fell on the private houses in the village and near the hospital. People in uniform collected corpses.”

An emergency worker at the scene described seeing at least 100 bodies, scattered around the area. Several villagers are believed to be among the dead.

There were also reports of an unknown aircraft flying near the downed passenger jet.

Broken pieces of the wings were marked with blue and red paint, the same colours as the emblem of the Malaysian Airlines emblem, surrounded where the plane went down.

Footage was uploaded to YouTube allegedly showing the smoking wreckage left by the Malaysia Airlines passenger plane.

The clip showed a residential area in Ukraine while plumes of black smoke reaching to the sky can be seen in the background.

Schipol is one of the main airport hubs in Europe and the Foreign Office said they were urgently working to see if any Britons are involved.

There are unconfirmed reports that at least eight could have been killed.

At least 23 American citizens are known to have been killed. Other passports lying on the ground are of Malaysian and Netherland citizens.

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko sai😛 “We do not exclude that the plane was shot down and confirm that the Ukraine Armed Forces did not fire at any targets in the sky.”

He sent his deepest sympathies “for the families and loved ones of those killed” and vowed “those behind this tragedy will be brought to justice.”

Malaysian Prime Minister Mohd Najib Tun Razak tweeted his shock at the latest Malaysia Airlines tragedy. He revealed on Twitter that his country are launching an immediate investigation into the crash.

He tweete😛 "I am shocked by reports that an MH plane crashed. We are launching an immediate investigation."

Prime Minister David Cameron also took to Twitter this evening to express his sadness at the MH17 crash.

The Conservative leader poste😛 "I'm shocked and saddened by the Malaysian air disaster.

"Officials from across Whitehall are meeting to establish the facts."

Recent days have seen an upsurge in Ukrainian claims that Moscow has started launching its own attacks for the first time.

However the fact that dozens of foreigners are among the dead is likely to prove a turning point in the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

Sanctions have been threatened by the EU against Russia who is failing to rein in the rebels and has been accused of supplying them with weapons.

However the international community has been reluctant to enter into an prolonged diplomatic spats while also attempting to deal with Syria and Isis.

In the past week, pro-Russian forces have boasted of downing four Ukrainian jets, including one earlier today.

But despite the fighting, an air traffic control source in Kiev admitted that - incredibly - there were no curbs on passenger aircraft flying over this area of eastern Ukraine.

http://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/78/590x/secondary/182056.jpg

The Boeing was at the altitude of more than 10,000 metres in the international corridor," said the source. "There were no restrictions on flying at that altitude, because previously there was no threat to aviation at such heights.

"The craft was led by the Rostov air traffic control centre of the Russian Federation together with Ukrainian managers. The Boeing disappeared instantly, without any warnings or SOS messages.”
As the drama unfolded, several other passenger jets were flying through Ukrainian airspace on one of the main routes from Europe to Asia for air traffic.

The news comes after a Malaysian Airlines plane carrying 239 people went missing in March while on a flight from the Malaysian capital to Beijing.

The country's government said they believed all people onboard MH370 were dead after a lengthy search in the Indian Ocean.

The plane, which had 227 passengers onboard, vanished on March 8 and despite a search costing in excess of £25million no trace of the airline has been found.

To notrieca Ukrainas gaisa spēki.
