Buy From a Foreign Guy to Make Phoenix Fry
One Eye
Imagine for a minute that you are the leader of Eden. Imagine that you can control the economies and armies of several nations. What would you do?
Would you erect barriers between your fellow nations so Greece had to produce all its own weapons, and every Swedish GM had to buy an org to import iron from Greece. Knowing that this would weaken Sweden with a shortage of gold, and leave Greece with a surplus of gold but not enough weapons? I dare say not.
I imagine that you'd have a disproportionate number of Greeks and Spaniards making iron to supply your whole alliance. Then you'd have the nations that couldn't make their own iron supply a disproportionate quantity of guns to arm those Greeks and Spaniards who are too busy making iron to make the guns.
Then you'd have our assets well distributed through the nations of your alliance. You'd have gold, and weapons in plentiful supply throughout your empire. You'd have efficient distribution of assets, resources, and production.
Then when you look at your opponent, Phoenix you would feel pity at their stupid trade barriers. You'd know that standing toe to toe, your nation would have the advantage. Your empire more efficient.
So for the love of all that is good in the eyes of Emerick, why would you ever wish to throw up barriers between the nations of your alliance?

Let us hope they listen.
Because, higher prices and less goods somehow make us stronger.

Goods > Gold Argument? When did we enter a timewarp?! And how long did it take to make that headline? 😉
V+S, can't wait for your next article in 4 months time! 😉
Yes Lorenzo, this is a debate that will never die.
FWIW I thought of the headline in about 4 seconds. That's about twice as long as it took to type it. 😛
An excellent observation but protectionism is always more popular for politicians.
This idea is fine and dandy.....EXCEPT US and Switzerland are the only 2 in EDEN with basically "free trade" (and they have 10% on gifts) . Im all for stuff>gold when were not going broke and its a 2way street, until then......
One Eye is my dad.
You make an excellent point BH. This analysis only shows the superiority of free trade if all parties trade freely.
This article does not address the benefits of having low import taxes while our allies maintain high import taxes. That topic is addressed ad nauseam in US forums.

This link takes you to one of a series of three linked articles that shows the superiority of one-sided trade over trade that is inhibited in both directions.
A nice, concise article that revisits a worn-out issue with a unique framing. Votat.
One eye, I like the title!
"throw up barriers..."
Um, the barriers are already there. Even at 5%, we'd still half the barrier our 'trade allies' already claim for themselves.
You take a harder line with the eUS workers and business than you do with the our 'trade allies.'
Face it, bro: Military allies do not trade allies make. Otherwise, they all would've joined your failed 1% import tax scheme months ago.
Like I said Ssomo, this article addresses how the best way to run an alliance vis a vis import taxes.
The debate about the benefits of low import taxes despite facing higher import taxes with other nations is another article.
Nice to see you still care though <3
Right. You're talking pie in the sky & I'm talking months of empirical human behavior. ;-P
And thanks, I do care. I hope you and your RL family are well & enjoying the new year.
Today is our first day of real nice spring weather. I'll take it! 🙂
Division of labour FTW 😛
It is nice to read people saying something not stupid every once in a while. Thanks One eye.
