The Belgian Atelaw Bekele has won the European championships cross-country in Slovenia. Sergey Lebid couldn't achieve his tenth title.

From the start, the former Ethiopian Bekele, who moved to Belgium when he was 16, lead the race. After two short laps, he accelerated. The pack slowly began to break apart. Former European champion Lebid was around the 15th position by then, a tactic he always used the past few years. But at one point, Bekele had some metres on the second position and no one reacted. With only two laps to go, a small group led by a Portugese athlete came closer, but Bekele was able to control the rest of the race and round of a perfect race. A very hard training camp, with Tirunesh Dibaba (Olympic champion), payed of superbly.

At the women's race the Irish Britton won after a very fast last lap, leaving Dutch favourite Herzog behind, who finished fifth.
