Around the World #15; The Powerhouses Stumble

Day 1,756, 21:50 Published in Canada Canada by Shoi12

So, how has the week passed in the New World? Who has made progress? Who has been dealt the scent of defeat? Find out in this week's edition of Around the World!

MAJOR WARS

The War of the Balkans

Battle of Bulgaria
Before

After

Belligerents: Turkey, Greece vs. Serbia, Bulgaria
Results: Bulgaria came back with a new sense of focus and determination that it had lost during the latter half of its Argentinean campaign. Despite fierce Greek resistance and a decent push by Turkey as well, the Bulgarians cleared out invaders from its lands, and secured its six regions back into its control in no small part to Serbia. Greece is hesitant to dedicate themselves to another war, and Turkey is still off battling Serbia. Bulgaria seems safe. For now.

Winner (campaign): Bulgaria (devastating)

Cro-Bosnian Resistance War
Before

After

Belligerents: Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina vs. Serbia
Results: Croatia and Bosnia will take those free provinces all day long. With Serbia busy battling through Turkey and into Iran, revolutionaries sprung up left and right and seized provinces back for their rightful owners. In this week alone, Serbia lost seven provinces to Croatia and Bosnia, and had it not been for some miscommunication, Serbia may have been attacked on four fronts in addition to their active wars in Turkey and Iran. Perhaps Serbia thinks that the provinces are easy to recapture, but Croatia and Bosnia look unwilling to give up their lands again without a fight.

Winner (this week): Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Winner (campaign): Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (devastating)

The Argentinean Triumph
Before

After

Belligerents: Argentina, Argentinean Puppet State Bolivia vs. Chile
Results: Chile is planning to move out of South America to the land down under, but before they can leave, they have some unfinished business in their mountainous home. Though their transfer is nearly complete, Argentina isn't letting Chile keep their old house. Despite Chile defeating Bolivia, Argentina is absolutely decimating any and all defense Chile is putting up. Frankly, Chile's defeat of Bolivia actually helps Argentina, as the southern nation no longer has to absorb their puppet state back into its lands separately. Chile is making great progress elsewhere, but at the expense of its home in the Andes.

Winner (this week): Argentina, Bolivia
Winner (campaign): Argentina, Bolivia

The French-Polish Crisis

Start

Belligerents: France, Revolutionaries vs. Poland, Spain, Macedonia
Results: Call it France's violation of their pact or call it France standing up to their oppressors. Either way, we have a fun time on our hands. After the political dispute escalated to a declaration of war, France quickly flipped Burgundy back to its cause, but Paris quickly fell to Polish forces. Macedonian troops marched through the Alps and captured Provence. However, as is often the case in Serbia, Poland has similarly seen revolts become a huge problem. Besides the obvious French RWs, Ireland and the Netherlands have started pushes to recapture provinces that look threatening, and Germany seems prepared to cut off Poland's supply chain in Saxony. France will need a lot of help to get out of this intact. Wanna help, Americans?

Winner (this week): Poland, Spain, Macedonia (minor)
Winner (campaign): Poland, Spain, Macedonia (minor)

The Middle East's Last Stand
Start

Belligerents: Turkey, Iran vs. Serbia
Results: In one of the closest and most intense fights in recent memory, Serbia secured a spot in northern Iran, and has since started moving eastward. Serbia went completely through Turkey, and held off a tough revolt in Eastern Anatolia to even begin the war. But after their success in taking the first step into the Middle East, Iran has already shifted priorities elsewhere, seen by its poor showing in Semnan. Turkey may still save the day by pushing east as well, and Iran may in time defeat Serbia, but the situation alone is a testament to Serbia's impressive might. It'll be a tough task.

Winner (this week): Serbia
Winner (campaign): Serbia

The Betrayal of Australia
Start

Belligerents: Australia vs. Chile, New Zealand
Results: I won't pretend to know the history between Australia and New Zealand. But many players on the Aussie side strongly opposed the land swap deal, and not surprisingly, the deal has come back to haunt them. Chile took advantage of the little deal to invade Australia for a safer base (aka away from Argentina), and New Zealand quickly closed up the gates, creating a claustrophobic 2v1 against the backstabbed Australians. And there was no godsend for the Aussies this time, as Chile swarmed across the desert, and despite the sharp contrast in landscape succeeded in ousting Australian control of over half the island. Australia is looking for a path to escape, but their fate seems sealed.

Winner (this week): Chile, New Zealand (devastating)
Winner (campaign): Chile, New Zealand (devastating)

The Alphabet Wars

The Finnish-Estonian War of Monotony
Before

After

Belligerents: Finland vs. Estonia
Results: Finland and Estonia have been battling for ages. This week it was Estonia's turn for a breakthrough, finally moving the battlefield across the strait to Finnish territory, but once again, the success was limited, as Southern Finland quickly flipped back to Finnish control. Being overshadowed by the Swedish-Belarusian war to the south (below), the consequences of the war are mostly personal, and this war sees no clear victor in sight. Perhaps this is the break that Estonia needed to defeat the Finns, but then again, doesn't this feel all too familiar?

Winner (this week): Estonia
Winner (campaign): Estonia (minor)

The Swedish Liberation of Belarus
Start

Belligerents: Sweden, Germark, Belarus vs. Latvia, Lithuania
Results: Talk about a wild ride! After Belarus' demise, the new Asgard alliance decided to test out its camaraderie and coordination by liberating the joint friend. Although the early campaigns by lead nation Sweden were disastrous, Belarus managed to take advantage and break free of Latvia. Sweden was invaded by both Latvia and Lithuania, but Germark has since rushed into Sweden to give their teammate a hand, and has lightened the load considerably. Belarus is pushing north into Latvia, Germark is rushing east into Lithuania, and Sweden is holding firm. Things look good for Asgard+friends.

Winner (this week): Sweden, Germark, Belarus
Winner (campaign): Sweden, Germark, Belarus
