April Fools' & eCanadian Remembrance Day

Day 1,228, 19:03 Published in Canada Canada by frankypicoto

I haven't written an article in 6 days so, since I have nothing better to do at 2:15am I figured it would be wise/fun to sketch something up for my readers.

April Fools'

As you all know, today (or yesterday for people like me) is/was April Fools'. According to Wikipedia we can't be sure of when the "celebration" of this day started since there aren't any specific references to the day itself. However, we can assume that its' origins are quite ancient since the references date back to 1392 where readers believe it was mentioned in a book titled Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

The latest reference (18th century) states that according to an English Newspaper this day had its origin "when Noah sent his dove off too early, before the waters had receded; he did this on the first day of the Hebrew month that corresponds with April".

We can't be sure about any of these assumptions but it's interesting to see how we came to have such a renound global "holiday" with such misterious background.

Although it is fun to see what has happened as the years passed it is sad to remember the casualties this day has caused. The most alarming disaster that has ocurred on this day was the April 1, 1946 Aleutian Island earthquake and tsunami where people in Hawaii and Alaska assumed the tsunami warnings were a prank and therefore many drowned. Because of this event the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre was later created.

eCanadian Remembrance Day

On March the 31st, a day known as eCanadian Remembrance Day occurred. This is one of the four days established by congress in June, 2010. The idea was first brought on by Nucksalltheway. After being widely accepted it was developed by congress members to become a widely talked about event. The thread itself was flooding with ideas. Sadly, as far as I've witnessed these events haven't been as publicised as many of us would like, nonetheless many citizens are aware of these days and take part in writing articles.

As chewytaz did. Unfortunately I wasn't able to organise anything for the March Remembrance Day but as of now I will start working on something for the 30th of June (so people, mark your eCalendars!).

The half-raised flag is a symbol used to indicate a fallen hero. Proposed by Citizen B

Everyone, thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed being pranked or pranking someone today (or yesterday!)!

As Always,
