Antiheros Manifesto

Day 1,049, 20:18 Published in USA USA by S.E.E.S

As an organization, S.E.E.S. has always been the subject of much controversy. Its leadership, notorious for being evasive and cryptic, often has not helped to clarify things in the public mind. However, there is good reasoning for this; the general view of the public, of outsiders, will never be entirely clear. Try as I might, this article will do little to alter the perceptions of either our supporters or detractors; they will still call us patriots and monsters, respectively. It is, therefore, prudent to spend little time in wrestling with such issues. Although, on occasion, the argument needs to be made so that those without firm opinions may hear another point of view; possibly more nuanced and complex than ‘omfgnazis!’

The reason S.E.E.S. is so hard to pin down is because of the type of game S.E.E.S. plays at; it’s very nature as the sanctuary of the American Anti-Hero. But, what does this mean? If you aren’t familiar with literary constructs, it might be easy to confuse the antihero with the antagonists; those that oppose the hero. But, this is not necessarily the case. An antihero has all the trappings of a bad guy and often is easily mistaken for one, but their acts are heroic.

Comparison: (from left to right) Hero; Villain; Antihero

A classic adage of the hero; the white knight bathed in holy light, is that ‘virtue is its own reward’. No one understands this better than the antihero but, perhaps as a defining characteristic, they will never be heard saying this. You might be asking ‘why’, but I believe the better question is ‘Why would the hero say this?’ When spoken, it often bears the outward appearance of benevolence and nobility of spirit… but if true, why would it be spoken? Why would one need to repeat, that which everyone already knows, for the sake of appearance if true reward is in virtue, not appearance?

It is this reasoning that defines the Antihero. The total disregard of their own apparent nature and the recognition others might say they ‘deserve’. They don’t believe in it. To an antihero, that which must be done is painfully obvious and to explain it to those who would argue is a waste of precious time and energy in what would likely be a case of casting pearls before swine. Those who know and understand virtue truly will recognize it and, at the very least, keep clear of the path. While those who do not understand it will likely attempt to capitalize on the easy target, building themselves up upon fau😜illars of virtue and righteousness for all to see, that their fame may spread, while requiring none of the effort of accomplishing that which is of the greatest good.

I may have gotten a bit esoteric, so let’s take it back to S.E.E.S. In the halls of the Specialized Elite Execution Squad, we have made it a refuge for those who do great service to America, regardless of what rumor implies, and a destination for those who wish to be in America’s service. Whether it be to start anew in the arms of a state they once called ‘the enemy’, the new work place for those disillusioned with mediocrity elsewhere or simply the buffet of awesome that draws in fresh, young gamers hungry for something other than the standard fare; S.E.E.S. is the home of those who wish to walk off the beaten path.

And though the journey along it may take one to the seedier parts of the game, ours and our own understand that, through it all, SEES is LOVE.
