Addressing Current Events #1

Hello, and welcome to the Poor Man's Blanket. I'm your man behind the desk, PencilPal.

This is a new segment I'm eager to try out, called "Addressing Current Events." What it is supposed to be, is a series of short paragraphs introducing current events of last week followed by an editorial by myself. Ideally, it serves as a week in review to anyone who missed something, and it serves as a way for me to one-sidedly present my own opinion on whatever I fancy without anyone presenting the opposite side. Essentially, I'm setting up targets four feet away and aiming with a sniper rifle. It should be fun.

On to the news!

Cromstar of Interest?
A couple days ago, Pfeiffer privately brought up to Cromstar and President A^2 the issue of possible conflicts of interest that might arise with Cromstar serving as both White House Chief of Staff and Speaker of Congress. It was decided the best way to proceed would be to publicly post the issue in the forums and allow the opinions of Congress and the public be heard. The fundamental question was whether or not anyone (not Cromstar specifically, it cannot be emphasized enough) could hold such high positions in two branches meant to check and balance the power of the other without there being a conflict of interest. I say it can absolutely be done. The nature of both jobs are administrative and more motivating lazy people to do their jobs than they are deciding the policy or opinion of the President or deciding the policy or opinion of Congress. They are both stressful, time draining jobs with long hours and tired eyelids, but do not grate against each other. The only question I have is if Cromstar is burning the candle at both ends and running out of wick, but that is HIS judgement as long as he is able to do both jobs effectively. Next issue!

Nos Jodimos
Today, Israel Stevens, Staff Writer for the White House, put forth a three-pronged plan to invade and wipe Spain with the help of Brazil and Portugal. Should it work it would be a huge morale victory for the United States and be a huge loogey in the face of our enemies. Many in the comments have added their two cents about whether or not the eUS is capable of such a feat, and honestly I leave the job of assessing military strength to those who've been here longer than ten days. 😛 So, I look at it from a different angle: a reveal of President A^2's most important issues. While RL President Obama's speech tonight reflects his focus on the economy at this present time, this press release shows that war is in the forefront of our ePresident's mind, and that will hopefully lead to results. Next issue!

Socrates' Wayward Son
Today, Plato, meaning eRepublik Staff, has made serious changes to the way militray units are run, by having second commanders as a new option and by stripping commanders of the ability to decided who joins their units. This has been met with mixed reactions as most of Plato's decisions usually are. My reaction is mostly indifference. I, and many other USAF members get their orders not from their MUs, but from the forums. The MU feed was a nice helpful shortcut, but other than that wasn't so much a big deal. Plato continues to change how things are run, but the off-site parts of eRepublik continue to dominate.

That's all for today. If you think I'm a genius who deserves praising or an idiot child needing admonishing:
