Walking through a wooden area late at night, I heard a wolf howl nearby. I stopped walking, stood still and tried to listen for sounds of movement. I had just got off a late shift and it was deadly quiet for 2AM. Prior to work, i went with some friends to watch the old movie "An American Werewolf in London". Clearly the werewolf movie was still rattling around in my mind. I had that internal dialogue we experience where the rational side of us attempts to dissuade the irrational.
Rational me: "Ok. No such thing as werewolves. That was just a dog"
Irrational me "That's what everyone says right before the werewolf leaps at them"

Once upon a time, in a small rural village, there lived a mischievous sheep named Baa-Baa. Baa-Baa was known for his notorious habit of stealing whatever he could get his hooves on. Farmers, townsfolk, and even other animals tireless tried to keep Baa-Baa from their goods.

However, one day, Baa-Baa discovered something absolutely divine- chicken dippers. The farmer's son, Timmy, would often leave his chicken dippers unattended while he played. Baa-Baa, being the curious sheep that he was, tried one and instantly fell in love. Since then, Baa-Baa would sneak into Timmy's backyard and steamed away with his chicken dippers whenever he could.

Unfortunately, Timmy's mother caught onto Baa-Baa's scheme and decided to teach him a lesson. She began placing laxatives in the chicken dippers. One afternoon, as Baa-Baa began to sneak away with his beloved chicken dippers, he felt his stomach start to churn. Running as fast as he could, he stumbled into a nearby stream, too sick to continue running.

From that day forward, Baa-Baa learned his lesson and began to lay off the stealing. Now, when he's feeling especially voracious and tempted by Timmy's chicken dippers, he settles for some good old fashion grass instead.

I feel there is some deeper moral story here.

I pulled up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie, "Yo holmes, smell ya later"

I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Up Jack got and home did trot, as fast as he could caper; went to bed to mend his head
with vinegar and brown paper. Jill went over to Old McDonald’s who had a farm, and on his farm he had a dog and Bingo was his name-O. And on his farm he had some chickens making a cluck cluck here and a cluck cluck there. And on his farm he had a horse who made a neigh neigh here and a neigh neigh there. And on his farm he had a cow that made a moo moo here and a moo moo there. And on his farm he had some ducks who made a quack quack here and a quack quack there.

Continuing to walk further into the woods, I could still hear the howling and still couldn't figure out what was going on. Then out of the silence of the night came a soul churning shriek, that sounded like it was just ahead of me on the path I was on. I was afraid to continue, but too curious not to continue. As I rounded a turn in the path, there it was, larger than life itself. It was one of those times that if you hadn't seen it for yourself, you wouldn't believe it. Right in the middle of the path....

The Wendigo's Curse

Lucas was a young trapper who lived in a remote cabin in the northern woods of Quebec. He had learned the trade from his father, who had died of a fever two winters ago. Lucas was lonely, but he loved the wilderness and the freedom it gave him.

One day, he found a wounded moose in one of his traps. He was about to shoot it, when he heard a voice behind him.

"Don't kill it, please. It's my friend."

"Who are you?" Lucas asked, lowering his rifle.

"I'm Aponi. I live with the moose. He's like a brother to me. Please, let him go."

Lucas was puzzled. How could a girl live with a moose? He looked at the animal, which was bleeding from its leg and panting heavily.

"I can't let him go. He's injured. He'll die anyway."

"No, he won't. I can heal him. Just let me get close to him."

Lucas hesitated. He felt sorry for the girl and the moose, but he also needed the meat and the hide. He was running low on supplies, and winter was coming soon.

"Look, I'm sorry, but I can't do that. This is my livelihood. I need this moose."

Aponi's eyes filled with tears.

"Please, don't be cruel. He's my only friend in this world. Don't take him away from me."

She moved closer to Lucas, and touched his arm.

Lucas felt a strange sensation in his chest. He looked at Aponi's face, and saw that she was beautiful. He felt a sudden attraction to her, and wondered what it would be like to have her as his companion.

He made a decision.

"Alright, fine. I'll let him go. But you have to come with me."

Aponi smiled.

"Thank you, thank you so much. You're very kind."

She ran to the moose, and whispered something in its ear. The moose nodded, and limped away into the forest.

Aponi followed Lucas to his cabin, where he gave her some food and clothes. She thanked him again, and told him her story.

She said that she was an orphan, who had been adopted by a tribe of Indians when she was a baby. They had taught her their language and customs, but they had also treated her badly. They had called her a witch, because she had a special bond with animals. She could talk to them, and heal their wounds.

One day, the tribe had been attacked by a group of white men, who had killed most of them and taken the rest as slaves. Aponi had escaped with the moose, who had been her protector since she was little. They had wandered in the wilderness for years, avoiding humans and living off the land.

Lucas listened to her story with interest and sympathy. He felt sorry for her, and admired her courage and spirit.

He decided to keep her with him, and make her his wife.

They lived happily for several months, hunting and trapping together, sharing their joys and sorrows, and making love every night.

But their happiness was not meant to last.

One night, Lucas woke up from a nightmare. He had dreamed that he was being chased by a monstrous creature with glowing eyes, sharp teeth, and long claws. It had caught him and ripped him apart.

He sat up in bed, sweating and shaking.

He looked at Aponi, who was sleeping next to him.

She looked peaceful and innocent.

But then he noticed something odd.

She had blood on her mouth.

Lucas felt a surge of fear and horror.

He got up quietly, and lit a lantern.

He went outside the cabin, and followed the tracks in the snow.

They led him to a gruesome scene.

She looked at Lucas with shock and pain.

She opened her mouth to speak, but only blood came out.

She fell back on the bed, and died.

Lucas felt a pang of regret and sorrow.

He had killed his wife, his lover, his friend.

But he knew he had done the right thing.

He took her body outside, and set it on fire.

He watched as the flames consumed her flesh and bones.

He hoped that her soul would find peace in the afterlife.

He buried her ashes under a tree, and marked it with a cross.

He packed his belongings, and left the cabin.

He never returned to that place again.

He wandered in the wilderness for years, trying to forget what had happened.

But he never did.

He was haunted by Aponi’s face, her voice, her touch.

He was haunted by his guilt, his grief, his loneliness.

He was haunted by the wendigo’s curse.

Nasruddin’s donkey was lost, but Nasruddin appeared to be happy, not sad. Instead of looking for his donkey, he sat drinking coffee in the coffeehouse.
