About newspapers

79 Day 408, 13:42 USA
Now, I have this newspaper here for ohh... something like a month, maybe a little less. I do like writing it, for my habit and joy is writing and the format is just enough for me to write small stories, inspired by actual thing happening in this eWorld. But to be honest, writing takes just as much time and effort than working or fighting or any kind of activity that takes place here - but it is not acknowledged in any way, except the so-called 'Media Mogul' achievement, for a 1000 subscribers which I believe only two newspaper reached, and one of them is of course is EI with its compulsory subscription scheme.

So writing newspapers and attracting readers is an achievement in itself, the game says... guiding the public opinion and serving marketing purposes is its goal, they say... and I do acknowledge that too. But still, at least some rewards should be given for those who write serious, honest, informative or in any way interesting newspapers. These are my suggestions for this:

1. The Media Mogul achievement's 1000 subscribers is way to much even in populous countries and impossible in smaller ones. It should be taken apart to three levels, like 200 subscribers - Media Darling (5 Gold); 500 subscribers - Media Mogul (10 Gold) and 1000 subscribers - Media Tycoon (15 Gold).

2. Writing good and comprehesive articles (with over 100 votes and/or 50 comments (not including pertamaxx-es and 'voted' ones)) should be rewarded by experience points.

3. A third button should be at the newspaper's profile, under subscribe; a donate button, so if a reader reads an interesting article then he/she might donate a small amount of money - as much as he/she would like.

4. A sort of e-Pulitzer prize should be avarded maybe monthly to a newspaper or a writer; it should be awarded by a committe or a board of some kind - maybe from people who win it previously.

5. A sort of motto, a short sentence should be available on the newspapers title page, describing its goal, purpose, political standing or general genre - or even a customisable title page for the paper (suggestion by Hattor)

I have also published my suggestions in the official forum, under suggestions - but here it might get more publicity.

I do not ask for donations now, please don't be mistaken; but it is a good idea I think - I sometimes feel like giving more to the author than just a vote...

Maybe you should have to pay to subscribe. Like .01 and then everytime you view an issue the author gets paid for writing it. This would improve the comentary a lot and it would improve the articals because people would want to get paid for there work. Also there should be a fee for veiwing articals basically like buying a newspaper .10 if you do not have a subscription to the paper. With this in mind there should also be a cost for putting out an artical, maybe say $1-2 per artical.

Desertfalcon

Desertfalcon Day 408, 15:44

I like your ideas but I don't think they should have seperate medals for levels for subscribers, I would be fine with the gold and expeirence points given out but I just think there should be only one medal for the newspapers and that would be set at 1,000. The game is getting more populated so 1,000 may seem like a lot now but the game has not even been out for a year and 10 newspapers have over 500 subscribers I think given another year 15 people will reach the 1,000 mark.

Benn is going to reach it soon and I hope to reach it later this year.

Quicksilver

Quicksilver Day 409, 23:38

mindflay: I most definitely would not like subscriptions to become paying! It would drastically lower the number of active subscriptions and besides here, when everyone can read the papers subscriptin really does not give you a lot extra.

Quicksilver
25
Quicksilver Day 409, 23:44

Desertfalcon: yes, the game is getting more people... but 1000 subscribers is still too much. Please, don't only think about eUSA, there are other, smaller countries as well, and people there who write good newspapers. For example eHungary hasn't got a 1000 active players so if the whole country subscribes to my paper it would still not get even near to a 1000. If you consider the other achievements and that how many people have already reached them you will find that the Media Mogul is by far the rarest - and it is so because the impossible demand of 1000 subscribers. Maybe in a year or so it will be realistic, I cannot say. But it is not so now.

good ideas, I am considering starting a newspaper, perhaps it can be a 'pulitzer' paper for the top 5 news articles of the month? I would of course have to take some kind of random poll for articles to get a fair view of the general opinion of people...

I'm also considering starting one on the gold exchange rate (sortof a stock exchange-ish news perspective) any feedback? (pm me)

Estlin Jack D
23
Estlin Jack D Day 409, 09:44

Sort the 'Pulitzers' by category, have a international board but start just awarding it to publications in English.

Give it Once or Twice a year. giving it too often or to just the highest voted will mean that some really poorly written articles will win merely for popular appeal. Giving it too often will also make it a petty small award based on childish politics. It would be cool to have an entertainment prize, a propaganda prize, maybe a rallying cry prize, but the Economy, Society, National and Foreign Policy categories should be the most important. Possibly with a gold or dollar prize to with as well.

Quicksilver
25
Quicksilver Day 409, 09:53

A year is a long time here. Consider that we have elections every month. Maybe every second month?

But I agree that there should be categories, like Economy, Society, National maybe, and Foreign Policy; and also Entertainment and Fiction, for none is more important I think than the others.

Estlin Jack D
23
Estlin Jack D Day 409, 10:21

Yes, I can digg. How about a 3 month *quarterly* award. That way the board that awards the prize can track articles and impact over time. Though I wouldn't be completely averse to giving it 6 times a year. I just say three months in case the process is very labor intensive.

Okay, so in addition to Economy, Society, National, Foreign Policy: add an Arts, Propaganda. You know that Propaganda, Arts, National and Society could all have lots of overlap, right? Arts and Entertainment and Propaganda and Poetry and Fiction could all go under the National banner. The fewer categories the better. It will always be easy enough for the selection board to to add another category when necessary.

What is Society? I think those are articles like this one, that have to do with the gameplay. Though I would also say that the person with the best campaign could win the Society prize if their campaign deals mostly with what they will do to improve the game experience of the electorate. Otherwise some other article should beat out your average campaign in the National category.

Let me know if I need to further explicate.

Totally agree..., ... as someone say above, there was in the beta a 'description' space, for companies and obnviusly newspapers, ..., I don't know why they removed it,

Totally DISagree with the idea to pay to read newspapers and make subscriptions..., I'm one of those who read a lot through the world media..., and I'm not that rich to pay that amount..., and be real, if it is implemented, it will be paying on Gold... if it were implemented, I probably have to not eat since the food cost the same as a read some news, ^o)

And also, the same for the idea to make the media an industry..., every one has the right to say the thing he wants (and obviusly, being respectfull to the others at the same time)..., and at this moment there is a cost to start a newspaper... now you want to raise it 10 times?, -,-,

Voted..., and subscribed, 2 good article I read from you, and I hope there will come more,

Getting 200 subscribers would still be impossible in eSouth Africa. I had my paper back in beta, and back then you could see how many views an article had. It is an achievement in itself to get 10 votes, let alone more than 20 subscribers. 1000... That just takes the fun out of it. The only reason people down here write anymore are for company sponsoring and small, pointless articles.

Changes need to be made.

And #5 was in beta, but the admins took it out because they thought it would make the game better...

The problems are that in the really small countries you are lucky to get anyone to read, we have less than 400, maybe less than 300 people in South Africa, let alone only around 50 who read the news. It is impossible to become a 'media mogul' in eSouth Africa.

A point to bring up - In eSouth Africa, you can have the entire viewing audience subscribe to your paper, but you still aren't getting anywhere. Your actually.... really far from getting anywhere.

Beta newspapers were far better.

As for really small countries... well, I don't think that achievements should be lowered even further than 200, because in that case people in bigger countries would start making papers and telling to friends to subscribe them just for the five gold. It should really remain a kind of achievement, in the purest sense of the word. And to be honest, as a writer there is no joy in writing for only a handful of people... newspaper writing definitely requires readers.

Well Quicksilver, keep writing in two languages and you'll definitely increase your readership. I am still not against the 1000 reader achievement. It should be as genuine an achievement as possible. I also agree with the commenter that said there need to be more than just military and political achievements. This is a logical next step. I think figuring out the way to get 1000 readers if you happen to be from a small country is one of the most impressive things you can do. You should receive extra special privileges though. You're still competing with the world.
Quick question, are there many publications in other languages? I currently subsribe to 2 Indonesian pubs and 2 American pubs. It might be difficult to put different language papers in competition with each other, but if there were enough of another language, some other name could be given to the awards handed out there. They of course could qualify themselves for the 'Pulitzers' by translating their articles into the most widely used, English.

It will be interesting to see what people will do. I am from eUSA, but you know what I think my magazine will be? A literary rag. We'll see if it is really more difficult for a South African straight news journal to get 500 subs in a year.

I am also for the tier of magazines that attach costs people money to subscribe to. It could just be a single tier, or maybe multiple levels. 1 dollar a month for the bottom? 4 dollars a month for the next one? I can't imagine any rag like the Economist that is worth paying much more than 4 dollars a month for. At least not under that status quo. And of course you have the option to give your publication out for free.

This will also create another problem for publishers who wish to sell their products rather than read it on the forums. Maybe the courts will have a little more something to do with copyright protection enforcement.

emilio sanchez Day 410, 11:38

Well, number 2 is pointless. Since if someone wants to give a donation, they can just give a donation to the author.. Some articles are written by other citizens besides the person who owns the paper. So unless the owner of the paper is honest etc. How would the actual writer of the article get their money if people donate to the paper itself.

Also number 5 was in the Beta version as was mentioned above. I don't why the admins did not carry this over into V1. It was a nice feature to see what certain papers were about, in their motto's or whatever you want to call them.

I also like the idea of what was mentioned somewhere above.. That newspapers should be able to charge a certain amount for subscribers. For example: If I wanted to subscribe to this paper, the owner could charge .50 Gold or something per subscriber a month or a one time fee.

The better the paper the more you could charge etc. This will help people earn a bit of extra money and newer players who write good articles could earn some extra money, so it would be great for new players and older players.

Thanks for the ideas. This would actually give a point to the whole newspaper business.

Better yet: Make a new career field, like "press" or something. It would be like an interactive job, where you get paid for writing articles for one newspaper. You could have a whole corporate ladder to climb, with positions and higher pay. You would only be allowed to write one article per day, and you would get bonuses similar to the ones mentioned in your article for votes or positive feedback. It could even be like a government department, fueled by taxes to pay its writers (not sure I like this one as much, but just an idea). Or you could have different, competing newspapers. I'd just like it to be a bit more like real life. You don't see every person writing their own newspaper in the real world, do you?
