A step towards a more democratic eUK

Greetings eUK,

Today a controversial and dividing act narrowly passed in Parliament - The Democracy Act. Proposed by myself it is the third time that the act has been proposed in one form or another, evolving from a bit of a complicated mess, to a simpler version, to what we have seen passed today. Ultimately however it has passed and is the first step in working towards a fairer, more democratic, participatory system in which every citizen has an equal voice should they choose to use it.

If you not aware of the act what it basically does is provide the mechanism for holding nationwide referendums in which any citizen can vote. This is largely thanks to the work of RRS who has created a working referendum site which you can see here. In it's current iteration the act only covers legislative affairs but I am sure there will still be interesting proposals to vote on 🙂

It is certainly not perfect, and over the coming weeks I'm sure many changes will be made once the act is actually put to use. As well as this the next key step will be the addition of non-binding referendums, that is referendums proposed to gauge public opinion on certain matters. These could cover a wide range of things from taxes to wars and allow the government to make better decisions based on the opinions of the people.

To the opposition, I do understand your reservations and I hope we can all come to an agreement on how to progress from here, one which benefits every citizen of the eUK.

All in all it is the first step down an exciting road for the eUK, and if we carry on down this path I am sure we will have the most admired and democratic system of governance in eRepublik - something which other nations will aspire to.
