A short story “Tru Dat”

Rom created a country and wanted people to visit. Lem wanted a holiday and so visited. Rom suggested that Lem would have a better time if he bought perks such as: hotel upgrades; excursions; and special souvenirs. Lem took some photos with his expensive new camera when he visited a tourist site. On his way back to the coach he turned down an alley and was mugged. While the thief was stealing his camera, Lem got a good look at his assailants face.

After the attack Lem made his way to the local police station. He entered and rang the bell. A policeman, out of breath and putting on his uniform, appeared behind the desk wearing a new camera around his neck. Lem immediately recognized the individual as the guy who attacked him earlier. After a short discussion that got him no-where Lem asked the policeman his name - the officer replied “I’m Rom”.

Policeman Rom said that Lem’s only possible course of action was to fill out this form and claim off his insurance. After filling the form out Lem handed the form to Rom for an official Police stamp (without which it would not be processed). Rom demanded ‘a special payment’ of several ingots before he would stamp the document. Obviously Lem felt quite upset at his treatment but the guy mistreating him owned the country and policed it.

Later that evening Rom had his friends round and told them what he did. They all agreed it was a good way to get ingots for free but were worried that their friend Rom, being a policeman, would arrest them. Rom reassured them that he wouldn’t as he would just reply to the victim “I am sorry but that investigation is not possible, or that you submitted the claim the same day which is far too late”.

Further tourists were robbed and no-one was caught or punished (apart from the victims being gagged for speaking up about the injustice).
