A Penny Saved Is 1.31 Pennies Earned?

Sometimes I feel like -- somebody's watchin' me

For today's issue of Little Green Apples, we're finally going to get around to something we promised two weeks ago. We're going to have a little Town Hall Meeting, Green Party style!

With as little editorializing as possible, here's today's issue for discussion: What do you think of the change to the eUS monetary policy?

For those of you who didn't notice yet, the value of the eUS dollar (i.e., the amount of gold it takes to purchase $1 on the monetary market) took a bit of a jump this week. While it has been trading at the rate of 0.019 gold for some weeks now, the eUS government took action to force that exchange rate higher (to where they want it to be) and it is now at 0.025 gold. I'll save you some math here -- that's a 31% increase.

A few observations to get the discussion rolling:

1) Most people did not notice the change except by its results. A quick scroll through today's news will reveal several articles commenting on the rapid decline of wages and prices without realizing that each eUS dollar is now worth more gold than it was last week.

2) A smart person (or someone with inside information like Martha Stewart!) would have done very well if they converted all their gold to dollars last week (at 0.019), and then turned around and sold them back this week (at 0.025) -- 31% return on your investment in one week is a day trader's wet dream.

3) The change has confused business owners who saw their relative wage costs increase by 31% in one jump but must lower their prices in eUS dollars in order to compete in a global market.

4) The change has confused employees who have seen wages drop as a result of #3 above, but don't realize that their purchasing power went up in turn.

Now I know that Congress spent a lot of time discussing this monetary policy change before taking action, but I also know 99% of our citizens weren't privy to that discussion. So what the USGP wants to know is: How does the common citizen and small business owner feel about the change? Do you understand the reason it was made? Do you agree with the change? Do you have any issues with the process for making the change?

We welcome any explanations / responses from government officials as well -- this is about the dissemination of information and realistic dialog between our citizens.
