A Letter to Mr. Leinport

Day 1,222, 13:11 Published in Canada Canada by Dominik

Janos Leinport,

You have failed your party. Or, rather, you have failed the little that is left of it after you alienated 95% of the active membership. Your congressional showing was abysmal. You have failed to enact any of your platform points. You have killed the interparty summit that those before you worked on. You have fractured the party and attempted to have it absorbed by a smaller party because of your complete failure as a leader. After your lack of success, you threw a tantrum and attempted to blame your performance on those who have been tirelessly contributing to the party for longer than yourself (some of which have been there from the very start). I hope you are quickly realising the difficulty of being party president. And you have shown clearly you are far from being up to the challenge and it was an enormous error of judgement for me to assume that you are. As it stands, you are to go down in the party's history either as the PP who finally killed the party or, simply as the worst in a long line of presidents. There is no excuse for your total failure. Your only option is to resign in shame and perhaps retain an iota of dignity.

The Leinport Story

Let us start at the beginning. After Acacia Mason's dispute with Citizen B, Janos threw his first tantrum and left the party. Scorpius persuaded him to return because, believe it or not, we thought he was a reasonable and intelligent member who had a lot to offer the party. Since he was one of the few active people left after WolfGang's resignation and Temujin's reckless loss of the party name to NorseFire, I made him vice-president. He performed relatively well. At the end of my term, I was deliberating running for a second term. Since Mr. Leinport expressed interest in running for PP (as Scorpius told me) I sat down to talk to him along with Scorpius. That is what is seen in those horribly incriminating logs that were posted through the DAL newspaper where, in our horribly dictatorial manner, I agreed to refrain from running for another term and endorsed Janos because- and this seems ludicrous now- I thought he would do a decent job.

Running on a decent-enough platform, Leinport won the presidency. We had begun congress preparations and all was going well. We were easily set to improve on the 8 seats from last term. I began to make preparations to leave the party after congress. Scorpius was slowly slipping back into two-clicking mode. We assumed the party was in good hands. Then Janos decided to do something that was entirely inexplicable. Who knows if he was acting on Addy's or Temujin's orders or if the guy just really didn't think this through. Either way, he decided to move the forum and IRC channel, remove valuable members like ArtoriusPerim and Supabeasty from the congress shortlist and go on an insane rant against me and Scorpius against whom Janos appears to have some sort of irrational psychotic grudge.

When Janos published his article, I figured "holy hell, this was a good coup." Unfortunately, the more I thought about it, the less impressed I got. It was, on the whole, quite poorly planned out. Now, I have nothing against the idea of a new forum. In fact, I had supported such a move. But the way Janos did it was literally quite laughable. I'm not sure what he thought would happen when a guy who has been in the party for 2 months kicks out the 2 longest-serving DAL members, but it was hardly a surprise that there were few who sided with him. Claiming to be working for the party, Janos amassed a grand total of some 4 followers. IronToader, Argityarg and OLloyd who have never contributed anything to the party and are, um, a few... screws short of a hardware store? And, of course, TemujinBC acting out his cult worship of MOO and personal vendetta against myself, Scorpius and the DAL. The people that sided with me was.... well, the whole party. Including my fiercest opponents within it:

Chochi who spent the last month tirelessly criticising the way I ran the party, the priorities I set, the methods I used etc. etc. was forced to, in disbelief, condemn Janos for his amazingly stupid actions.

Dr. Pain who, I feel, has always harboured a dislike towards me, was also found shaking his head at Janos and his utter disregard for those who built the party before him.

Relic10 who was hardly a strong supporter of me, was turned into the most die-hard member of the anti-Janos faction.

The list continues. Supabeasty, Mr. Rock, Frankypicoto, Artorius Perim. Hardly my puppets. Nucksalltheway (one of the few heroes of this tale) who was manipulated into going along with Janos' plan, was appointed as a neutral party treasurer. Because he refused to go along with Janos' attempts to use the party treasury as a political tool against me and Scorpius. This loyal member who was following the instructions Janos had given him for keeping the treasurer neutral, was accused of theft by the PP.

So, these people were all scared off. Most of them decided to run for congress with other parties. Janos was left sitting alone in his new IRC channel. He had successfully purged the party of nearly every valuable member. The DAL was left without anybody who understood the election process. I had minimal experience with SVU last term and got 8 seats. So clearly a guy who had no experience whatsoever could be glad for his 5 seats as biggest party. Running everybody from the party and killing your own SVU is one thing. Not being capable of running a decent strategy is another (I was watching DAL in the last minutes). But letting DAL hit rock bottom in congress elections turned out to not even be Janos' lowest point...

I watched his conduct after the election with amusement and a tiny bit of pity. But mostly just amusement. After the terrible organisation of the last few minutes where they didn't even manage to secure Quebec, Janos threw a hissy fit and blamed his election failure on myself and Scorpius. I suppose there is a little bit of truth in that. Like Janos said, if me and Scorpius were there, the DAL could have managed another 7 seats. I think Janos is finally starting to realise how vital these people he decided weren't good enough for his regime actually are. Nice to know we're worth 7 seats to him. His little outburst he carried into public and utterly embarrassed himself by publishing an IRC log that makes him look worse than the guy he was trying to smear. In an act of childishness that would make Tem proud, he also changed the party's name and kept with his story that the DAL's failure was Scorpius' fault rather than that of his poor leadership, organisation and lack of tact.

He also briefly tried to claim that he had meant to get 5 seats, though this was short-lived for obvious reasons. He soon went back to claiming that the DAL was dead. Muglack made a witty observation:

"Last Article: 'The DAL IS Reborn'

This Article: 'Scorpius killed the DAL'

Conclusion? Infanticide."

Yup. Turns out when Janos didn't get his way, he decided the DAL was dead. Of course, this was through no fault of his own. Nope. Nothing to do with alienating the entire active membership. Janos wasn't done yet, however. After claiming the DAL is dead (and it was Scorpius' fault, I swear!) he decided to merge the party with MOO. Well, his part of the party. This translates to: Janos and Tem decided to start voting with MOO in congress. This, in turn, translates to: absolutely nothing has changed. So, Janos admits to being either an outright MOO puppet or simply somebody who worships the party in an unnatural way. Either way, he has attempted to sell the party to MOO. This will likely lose him the last few members who stuck with the party and leave him with Tem and the few zombies like Toad and Argityarg.

I would also urge the few reasonable people DAL has elected to congress to leave the party in-game and sit as independents or with other parties as a show of solidarity with the members purged by the Leinport regime and in opposition to this attempted sale of DAL to MOO.

I would like to conclude this article with some tips for next time.

Tips for your Next Coup

So, Janos. Here are some tips to make it work better next time. Unless, of course, this outcome was your goal from the start in which case, kudos to you for killing a historical party. Anyway, assuming your actual goal was to improve the DAL by consolidating your control, here are a few pointers:

*Don't do it before an election

Seriously, if you have to purge a party of people you don't like, make sure to wait until after congress.

*Make sure you do it in a way that guarantees you popular support

When you purge a group of people and have their critics resent you for it, you're probably doing something wrong.

*Don't pretend you understand a party when talking to people who have been here longer than you

Most of our active membership considers you to be a noob. Please heed their advice rather than pretending to know what's best.

*Follow through on your promises

You ignored your own platform and violated your own anti-backroom deal policies.

*Don't throw a tantrum when you lose

It helps get rid of the few people who supported you, though.

*Time to pack things up when your right-hand man is Toad

Like, seriously, mmkay?

I don't even care about tl;dr and I'm not going to bother with pictures and whatnot. There's a reason the article is the length it is.... and it's mostly because I like to type and have little to nothing else to do today.

Mr. Leinport, do the right thing. Resign as party president and apologise to the active members you screwed over. I don't care about the party myself anymore. But I will not let it be killed by you. If the next PP wants to put it to rest, that is his or her decision.

You say you lost your faith
But that’s not where it’s at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You’re in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don’t know to begin with
