A History of eRepublik Alliances: Part II

The Not-So-Plain Dealer is committed to digging deeper into the issues that affect eAmericans and uncovering truths that may not be so plain from the surface.

As important as the Mediterranean Alliance may have been during its activity, it became arguably more important in its break-up. A "Cold War" of sorts had been developing between the Northern Alliance and FIST, but geographic limitations had largely (completely?) prevented this Cold War from running hot. Tensions between the Northern Alliance and FIST were reflected in a rift within the Mediterranean Alliance. eFrance and eItaly favored engagement with FIST and had conquered eSwitzerland because they perceived them as a puppet of the Northern Alliance. Meanwhile, eSpain and eCanada favored engagement with the Northern Alliance.

The rift in the Mediterranean Alliance became too great and eCanada and eSpain peeled off to form a new alliance with the former Northern Alliance nations (except eIreland, who somehow remained neutral in all this), eUK, eNorway, eSweden, and eRomania. It seems that eUSA and eArgentina left PANAM to join the rest as founding members of the Atlantic Treaty of Latin, American, and Nordic Territories for International Security ... which mercifully went by the acronym, "ATLANTIS". eCroatia, eFinland, and ePoland joined as well, but not before war was joined with the other international alliance, PEACE GC.

As the Mediterranean Alliance was dissolving, it became clear that ATLANTIS was on the horizon. eFrance and eItaly felt, however, that joining FIST would lead to a stale-mate. It was not until the formation of ATLANTIS that eBrazil, now flanked by an alliance it refused to join, reached out to FIST leadership about forming a new alliance. Former PANAM nations, eBrazil and eVenezuela, joined with the FIST nations - eGreece, eTurkey, eIran, ePakistan, eJapan, and eIndonesia - and most of the artists formerly known as the Mediterranean Alliance - ePortugal, eFrance, eItaly, eNetherlands, eAustria, eHungary, and eBulgaria - to form the People of Earth Associated under Common Excellence: Global Community. In the grand FIST tradition of cool acronyms this one conveniently came out as "PEACE". While PEACE may have been their new name, FIST more effectively captured their posture as this previously geographically isolated alliance now had multiple open fronts with ATLANTIS.

The original ATLANTIS members had signed their charter on the 22nd of August 2008, while the original PEACE members signed their charter on the 27th, but neither side had long to enjoy their new-found camaraderie because eRomania declared war on eHungary on the 28th sending the two international alliances headlong into war. [eMexico had an ongoing war with eSpain in which "PEACEKeepers" participated, but this was not of nearly the same scale and eMexico did not become an official member of PEACE until September.] This war (called World War I) was of such a magnitude that eRepublik had multiple server issues and had to take the war feature off-line. After early successes, ATLANTIS was driven backwards by the sheer numbers of "PEACEKeepers" (ever wondered why the capital of eUSA is Florida? ... it was the only territory left free of PEACE control) which only multiplied as the war dragged on.

Whereas the four alliances that had preceded them were marriages of convenience (often unhappy ones at that), ATLANTIS and PEACE seem to have been driven, for a time, by what may be better described as ideology than strategy. If this is true, then it certainly seemed that PEACE's ideology was winning the day as most new players and all newly created countries were sympathetic to PEACE. eUK and eArgentina defected to PEACE from ATLANTIS and a host of previously neutral or nonexistent nations joined as well making PEACE the largest alliance in history. Of course, they say the winners write the history books, or in this case the top newspapers, and I suspect the winning caused the apparent victory of ideology rather than vice versa. Nevertheless, ATLANTIS dissolved when members eSweden and ePoland attacked fellow member eGermany in May 2009.

But all was not well in the PEACE-full "utopia" (which means "no place" for a reason) either, and eGreece left PEACE when ATLANTIS troops aided them in preventing an eTurkish takeover. November of 2009 was when it all fell apart for the "Global Community", though, as eItaly left over tensions with eCroatia on the 11th of November 2009 opening the floodgates. Two days later eIndonesia left because PEACE would not approve their war with (neutral) eMalaysia. Within a week and a half, PEACE dissolved (unless you ask eFrance, who insisted that PEACE was still solvent and that a new charter was in the works until January 2nd). ATLANTIS was more or less reincarnated as EDEN and 15 former members of PEACE arrayed themselves as PHOENIX to counteract this new alliance, but for that you must stay tuned. 🙂
