I finally caught up with Major Firo Prochainezo, Commander of the 3rd, between mass attacks against Iran last night.

Custer: Jees, dude, you are just all over the place! You know, I had to interview Major Berkman the other night because I couldn't get you to hold still for me.
Firo: I saw you coming, Custer.. I really just like to do my job, I'm not so big on being in the spotlight. But I have been reading your articles in the Saber about the 1st and the 11th, and now I'm ready to give the men of the 3rd Regiment the recognition they deserve.

Custer: Well, then you know how this works. I like the soldiers and civilian readers to know about the officers, so they can see what they, themselves are capable of achieving.
Firo: Of course, Captain. I suppose my story is like most others.. I had made it up to a Company-level position in the Training Corps and realized I had reached my peak there, if I was to advance any higher I would have to move on. I'd gotten to know several Troopers and Cavalry officers, and they all gave such glowing reports of how happy they were over here, so my decision of which branch to transfer to was an easy one.

Custer: Did you retain your TC rank when you transfered over?
Firo: I wish! No, I started over from scratch last August, a Boot Recruit like any other. I trained under Captain Jennifer Elaine and Sergeant Drill Instructor (SIR, YES, SIR!) Tomato, and then was assigned to a fighting platoon in the 3rd Armored.
I really loved Basic, my Sergeant Drill Instructor (SIR, YES, SIR!) and Captain really got my mind right, and I was proud to have made Private First Class upon graduation.

Custer: Now, wasn't that about the time V2 was causing a mass exodus from the game, and the Cavalry along with all branches took a considerable hit in personnel?
Firo: Yes, and worst of all it was the more experienced players who were most frustrated with the ill conceived changes to the game, so we lost some damn fine officers. My experience at TC was in my jacket, so I was tapped for Exec of the 3rd ARC 2nd Platoon in September. I served with Platoon CO 2nd Lieutenant PenguinLord until he had an attack of RL, and took command of the Platoon.

Custer: Cool.. from Platoon CO to now Regimental Commander... Bribes? Bl@w j@bs?
Firo: I swear, I am gonna knock you clean into next week, Custer.
Ethix was at Regiment Command at the time I think, probably a Major.. he mentored me and helped me learn to command the Cavalry way. There's always opportunities to advance, because players have changes in their lives and leave the game or their availability changes, and most recently when Ethix moved up to Senior Staff I killed a couple guys to be next in line for Regimental Commander.

Custer: I... er... well, let's just move on, then... Major.. sir.
(I won't even mention that he's still got some blood spatter on his uniform shirt...)
Firo: Yes, I thought you'd see it my way. Don't ask no more, just let me tell you.
Our Regimental Staff consists of Deputy Executive Officer 1LT Chesehead, Executive Officer CPN Lieutenant Scheisskopf, and myself. Each brings their own unique personalities, qualities and talents to form a leadership team which inspires greatness in all who serve in the 3rd Regiment.
We have an Advanced Training Program in the 3rd, as do the others. We emphasize teamwork and strategy, military history, plus the principles of honor and duty. And having a good time. After all, we're playing a game, so even studies and structure has to be fun.
A big part of teamwork is cross-training. Each of us-- Chesehead, Scheisskopf and myself-- are capable of doing each other's job as well as our own. We train our Troopers the same way. One of these days there'll be promotions, or one of us will come to our senses and rage quit, and every one of our Platoon leaders has to be prepared to step up.. and every one of their Troopers has to be prepared to step up as well.

Custer: Boy, they sure didn't have anything like this when I was coming up through the ranks a hundred years ago. My Platoon leaders went on RL vacation and I got volunteered to fill in, and it was like being thrown into the deep end of a pool full of sharks.
Firo: That's exactly why we have developed the program this way. And it has a direct correlation to the real world as well. You never know when you may be volunteered at school to lead a lab group, or at work to take charge of your crew. You may come onto the scene of a car wreck, and the leadership experience gained here could mean life or death to someone if you're the only one who knows to keep calm and take command of the situation.
In my opinion, and as Regimental Commander my opinion is the one that counts, we have the finest Troopers in the Cavalry. They are the smartest, best trained, and best equipped for any situation-- game or RL-- of any players in any uniform of any military outfit in the game.

Custer: So.. it's all work and no play?
Firo: Of course there's fun-- we have our own IRC room for the Regiment, and have bots set up for Trivia, Uno and Poker. Part of the fun is that we play among ourselves, sharpen our skills and our minds, then when we play in the main Cavalry room we kick all your asses.

Custer: Oh, and all this time I thought you guys were just cheating at cards..
Firo: This interview is over, Captain. And, may I add, fu*k you, Custer.

Custer: Oh, for Cripes sake!

Are you ready to be a leader in everything you do?
