One of the most important things a citizen can do in erepublik is partake in the elections for Congress.

Citizens can stand as candidates under a Political Party or they can vote.

In order to participate in the congressional elections, access your party page and click on the candidate button. Each citizen can vote for their chosen party. The congressional elections take place in the 25th of each month. You can submit your candidature from the 16th of each month until the 24th. The Party President can change the order of the list ONLY on the 24th of each month.

Only the top 5 parties (in the 25th of each month, 00:00) are able to be elected into congress.

The amount of congress members each country will have depends on the amount of regions it has on the 23rd of the month. However, if the country loses all of its regions during the elections or before them, they won't have a congress. If the country loses some of its regions (not all of them) during the elections, it won't be modified.

How many congressmen does a country get?

1 Region → 10 Congress Members
2 Regions → 20 Congress Members
3 Regions → 30 Congress Members
4 Regions → 40 Congress Members
More than 4 regions → 40 Congress Members
More than 40 regions → 40 Congress Members + 1 New seat for each region above 40.

Voting:

Erepublik uses a system that is commonly known as Proportional Representation.

This means that instead of voting for an individual candidate, citizens are invited to vote for a particular party.

The top 5 parties will publish a list of candidates for you to consider.

Congress seats are then allocated on a % basis when looking at the whole of the votes cast.

e.g. If party "Green" got 50% of the total votes cast in a congress election, it would expect to be allocated 50% of the congress seats available.

In that example, if the eSA had 4-9 regions under its control then "Green" would be allocated 20 of the 40 congressmen available.

Party Lists:

When congress seats are allocated, the candidate at the top of the list gets in first. That means that if your party has only been allocated 3 congress seats for instance, only the top 3 candidates on your list would get in.

Hence, those at the top of a party's list (as chosen by their PP on the 24th) have a lot better chance of getting into congress that those at the bottom of the list.

So how do you get your PP to place you at the top of a Party List?

Well, every Party is different - so the first piece of advice would be to choose your party carefully. familiarise yourself with what the different parties stand for. Register on the forums, read articles, manifestos, and the wiki to find the party that best suits you. A lot of people just join a party without actually knowing what it stands for. Do some research before and make sure that you join a party that is right for you. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask the party leader.

Show initiative: Take part in discussions on feeds, on articles and on the forums. Let people see who you are and what you stand for. Erepublik is a social game so join in the discussions and let people get to know you.

Another great way to get into the Community is to join your country's channel or your party's channel on IRC. On IRC you can take part in real time chat and it is a great way to get to know new people, talk to your fellow party members, and more. A lot of people say that IRC is the best part erepublik.

Make connections: The well-established players aren't where they are today by just being two-clickers. They have gotten themselves into the game and learned how things work. Make sure to read the guides and such to the game so you understand the game mechanics and how the most important things work. Talk to people in the game, forum, on IRC. Talk to your party leader and your fellow party members. Find people who can help you with tips and tricks and everything will be much easier and way more fun.

Write a manifesto: If you think you are ready for COngress, you should have received an idea of how things work and what interests you in the game. Formulate this in a manifesto and let people see that you actually have an agenda and something you will work for. Why else should people vote for you if they do not know who you are or what you stand for? Many manifestos either say too much or too little, promise heaven and earth or actually nothing at all. Try to make it personal and realistic, it can be a good idea to let someone from your party read it before, to make sure you aren't "off-message" about something others in your party may disagree with. Remember voters are voting for a party list and not nescessarily you specifically. If you think this sounds complicated, ask your leader or your fellow party members to help you with formulations and tips. You can also read manifestos from other people to get an idea of how they usually look.

Show respect: Congress is about more than just getting a medal and some gold, it is a responsibility and a step towards the major positions in your country/party. Be clear and specific about what you want to achieve, but be respectful and polite to others. Show respect to others and you will most likely receive it as well.

Do not rush things: Don't start out by starting lots of proposals. It is better to discuss it with the party and congress first. The Parliament usually has its guidelines and you should read them before you do anything at all. We often see new congressmen who post various proposals without discussing them first. If you are unsure about it just talk to other congressmen, the president, the Speaker and/or party leader.

Take part in the discussions, and vote: As a congressman, you have the possibility to change a lot of things in your country; propose new taxes, MPPs and importantly, hold the Government to account.

Try to keep up with the discussions and be active in articles, the feeds, the forums and IRC. Nobody knows everything in the beginning, and most people are patient with newcomers. Usually it is better to be part of the discussion and be wrong, than not take part at all.
