[World] Out of character// Micro payments and why we should not hate. UPDATED
Zacharia Raven
Today Erepublik made what many think as the greatest mistake in its history. They implemented the first real micro payment system into the game as Personal trainers. They said that it is meant to help the beginners to catch the oldies and thus help all nations.
First the obvioius: That is either a lie or stupidity, I don't disagree with that. If they really wanted to help the newbies, they would have level-capped the personal trainer. As it is now that all can use it, it will of course make older and richer more powerful just because they are richer. That is the only mistake I think developers di😛
1. Never lie to your customers. 2. Never assume your customers can't do math.
Customers, whaa? We are players..aren't we?
Yes, we are, But officially players are also customers. And this is where this goes out of character into deeper things.
Servers aren't free. The more players there is, the more it costs. This is really simple math. If there was only 100 players, who made about 10 articles a day and fought alltogether 150 times a day and worked 70 times , it would require X amount of admins and Y amount of monthly costs to maintain the serverspace.
Then there will be 1000 players and they make 100 articles, fight 1500 times and work 700 times a day. This will need a whole lotta' more of everyhing. Let's say 1,05*X and 1,05*Y.
And now there hundreds of thousands of players doing thousands articles, millions fights etc. You get the picture?
First there was their own pockets. Then some EU-thing, if I recall correctly. Then ads, gold.. And now micro payments. Has the game died? Is this really about fullfilling the never-ending greed of the admins? Well it could be, but then registering into this game would cost 10 euros and every click you make would cost 1 euro. Then they would start making money FOR THEMSELVES.
As customers we can't honestly expect to get good quality for nothing. Just because we don't get any physical item for our money spent on gold it doesn't mean we don't get anything. Let's put it this way: when you call to customers service, you usually pay per minute. Do you get something that you can touch or eat? No, you get service. And services are one of the most important products in the future. In some countries, like Finland, they already are.
"Lol what service I get from erepublik? Do they fix my car?"
A service is something that fullfills a need. A need can be advice, consult, repair, customer service or...an Internet-based game. So when you play a game, you ase using either a product or a service, depending whether you actually bought it and how it was produced.
Erepublic is produced all the time. And production costs. And since this is no hobby, these costs must be met via incomes. Otherwise there is a negative result wich leads to bankrupsy. Yeap, if they can't keep up with the costs, this game will shut down.
I have seen this happen many times. I once played a web game for 5 years. I was even a donator. During that 5 years i donated over 100 euros. And then BAM it went into smithereens. Did they screw me? No, because donation doesn't mean same as paying. The devs didn't really talk about their financial problems, just "please donate to keep Marcoland alive".
All I want to say, that this game is something we want to play. We want to use it to fulfill our need to - maybe socialize, train doing politics, or just to spend our freetime. This game is free for us, but not to those who keep it running. It is only good that they give us possibility to keep this service possible. If you don't like the game and are not ready to "purchase" it by the means of donating a few euros a month for personal trainer, leave. Now, We, the real players, won't me missing you.

UPDATE
It seems devs took down the article which caused unseen rampage of complaints, about the training grounds. I just hope that they don't delete it, but add a level cap to it, like they should have in the first place.
Here are some other articles that show more mature aspect into this than those "YOU HAVE KILLED THE GAME!!!" scribblings:

"the real players"
Hahahahaha! Oh, wow... I mean... Bhahwhhaahahaaa!!!!
You just made me a day!! 😃😃😃😃😃
But seriously, most of us non-real players are potential paying customers, who are simply discouraged to pay because they've seen the real face of eRepublik. Reasons are many, but many older players surely remember the numerous bugs (including the always hilarious gold bug), outlandish lies and poor service and think that at its current state the game simply isn't worth paying for.
Nice article.
I paid for gold so I could start a Company. To be honest I don't see the big deal. It would Cost me 2 gold to increase my strength .16 instead of .08
of course the new system might end up being like the market area on runescape which completely broke the economy and ruined the game forever...
i also hate captchas. i might quit just over those.
Very true. This game is really a business, like many other webgames, tribalwars, hattrick etc. It is normal that they want money to keep the business profitable. However, what is unfair is that, unlike the other 2 games I mentioned, here, the one who pays gets an advantage within the game for paying...whilst in tribalwars and hattrick, it is just some cool features...
Excellent, level-headed article.
On the other hand, my opinion is that we're overpaying for this service (if you take its quality into account).
Interesting.. Interesting.. Voted!
Price-quality realionship is a valid question, but as this is constantly being updated, I think that we are investing for better quality in the future.

i agree this part "Servers aren't free"
voted, you are right.
I systematically rocketjump players!
"As customers we can't honestly expect to get good quality for nothing."
Quality? Where? 😮
"Now, We, the real players, won't me missing you."
Ha ha, you call yourself a real player 😃DD
REAL PLAYER... comeon dude. What the heck that suppose to mean, real player hahahahahha 😃 😃 😃
i agree with the author of the article. we cant have the game without paying for it. otherwise it will be closed down
Epic. We can see the eRepyblik real player:
Zacharia Raven, so make him a history - this is only one real player here.
if they want to pay for their servers, then lets make foundation like wikipedia... all free, because some would give those 5$ a month so others can play free - imagine, people fighting for congress by supporting server renting - this would be bad idea?
You do need a lot of money to run a service like this, I agree. However, I find it odd there aren't _any_ ads in the game. While I'd hate to see flashy 500x500px ads jumping in front of media articles, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing some more sophisticated ads.
In fact, the admins have great potential in the userbase - the users already sort themselves to some degree for ease of advertisement. Also, the game is based on buying products, working and such. Instead of Q3 gifts, why don't we produce XBOX consoles? (okay, obviously there's the problem with guns and such 😛)
then why youtube is free? It's admins problem they couldn't find the way of financing this project without bothering players. By bothering players by non senses there will be no players -> no project -> no admins.
You know, there are several players who CANT pay. I live in neither Europe or USA, which means I dont have euros or USD. Since this inst a real reason, you could factor in that several players could be 10-14 year olds, who dont have credit cards to actually pay. And because of this, they are getting discriminated against. Many would willingly pay.
This article isn't about those who can't pay but would pay. Other can pay but won't. That is a fault in the system, yes.
Part of the problem is the fact that the strength upgrades are done using the in-game currency.
The admins have set the current raw material distribution, so some countries in the game are by default richer than others.
In my opinion, a better solution would be to make it cost real money instead of gold. For example, by paying 10e you'd get +100% train efficiency until strength 10 and by 20e you'd get +100% efficiency until str 20. Or, 20e for +200% till str 10 and 40e for +200% till str 20.
Funny, I was reading this offline and there actually where Google ads all over the page. Have they always been there or were they just added?
I'd love to produce Xbox consoles if if kept this game up. 😛
Pistetään levitykseen.
@Gabriel FP: You're right, hattrick doesn't give an advantage with the supporter package, but it's a different type of game. I haven't played tribalwars but, from my knowledge, it's very similar with travian, which GIVES an ingame advantage to payers.
It seems that 90% of the users aren't playing other browser MMO's, therefor I have to say this: I've played many browser games and MOST of the are giving advantages to payers. As Zacharia Raven said in the article above, donations aren't enough to keep a MMO going. Let's get real ppl: our society is based on economy. Do you think that the admins are working for free? Even if they are blamed for many things, in the end they're working for US, trying to keep the game safe from cheaters. They've made many mistakes, but they are humans, the mistakes are part of our nature. Secondly: the servers. Do you really think that a game like this works on desktop PC's? It requires some heavy sh** to keep it going. If all the users would pay I think that no one will see the headless chicken. And all those servers require maintenance.
Everybody wants cool new features...if they would have the money to hire 100 new programmers, I think that we would have new features on a weekly basis.
It is true, they've made some mistakes: I hate that CAPTCHA, and they've "lied" with the "helping the new users to grow faster" thing, but the strength buying, with some small adjustments (higher prices) will not interfere with the gameplay.
Amen to Volaxad's comment.
Comparing this to Youtube is inaccurate, because youtube is not a game for starters. It is now part of one of the most biggest corporations in the world, Google, and it lives only trough advertisement incomes.
I don't stand for the mistakes or flaws or even flat-out lies that devs do; no, this has nothing to do with that. What I am upset about is the overwhelming stupidity of Erepublik community. They seem to believe, that all this is free and will be forever, and at the same devs will listen to their complaints and make thos better.
All that requires work and resources. And only way to get more resources is to get players to pay, and that is why we have gold here.
Is it unreasonable to GIVE something back to users who support the game? Is it an advantage? I say it is not. I say it is a sign of gratitude. They need us, we don't need them. If this fails, we find next game. In my opininon, players who make this game possile deserve something extra. May it be extra strenght, or something.
It seems they took off the EI article considering the training change. I just hope that they only adjust it to actually help the noobs and not delete it totally.
Excellent article!
Zacharia, look. There are a lot of things admins could have done to get the money they need even from the players themselves, without upsetting game balance.
Scadens, as I said, they should have level capped the training ground, for example so that only players under level 18 can use it, or they would gain more from it.
But the players have no right whatsoever to be upset about the main idea: making this game possible trough willing and paying players.
Autor is only stupid, if can not see that this shit 'invention' lead game economic to collapse, and players to leave this 'lineage', WoW is less expensive and more interesting.
Then go to wow and pay monthly costs.
Less expensive..yeah..considering
THIS GAME IS FREE.
I totally agree. http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/military-training-for-fat-cats-1082944/1/20" target="_blank">http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/mili[..]/1/20
THIS GAME was FREE
Good article. Voted.
This game is still as free as it has ever been. No one forces you to buy gold or train with it. But if you do, you get ahead in the game as a reward.
Aah. So that's what happened to Marcoland. "That makes me a sad panda."
