Writers' Guild of Canada
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!
The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) is proud to announce- in honour of National Plugson Day- the commencement of the 2nd Canada Prize competition!!! It has been a long time since the first (very successful) Canada Prize tournament was held, so here is a recap of what happene
😛
In short, the Canada Prize is a competition to showcase the best writers eCanada has to offer. The competition is open to all people with newspapers in Canada. Here is the- slightly modified- format for this year's tournament:
ROUND I:
An open round held between April 6 and April 14. Anybody can submit an article on any topic and it will be evaluated by a panel of anonymous judges: just make sure to put "[CP]" into your article's title. The top 16 writers will move on to the ROUND II. Only one article per writer, make sure to PM either Dominik, Plugson, Marcchelala or Adasko with the link to your article so we don't miss it.
ROUND II:
The 16 from the last round will be seeded into 4 groups of 4 (A-D) based on their scores out of 100 in the last round. Each group will be assigned a semi-specific topic (e.g. War in eRepublik) and every member of the group will write an article on that topic; the topics will be assigned on April 13 and writers will have until midnight on April 15 to write their articles. Once again, they will be evaluated by WGC judges and bottom two articles from each group are eliminated. Top 2 will move on into the knockout stages. Best writer in Group A plays second best from Group D and vice versa- same for Groups B/C.
ROUND III:
The quarterfinal- a one-on-one knockout stage. Each pair of writers gets a topic (this time slightly more specific) and can write an article starting on midnight April 16 (Friday) and ending on midnight April 18 (Sunday). The web will look like this:
A1 vs D2
Winner (A1-D2) vs. Winner (B1-C2)
B1 vs C2
Winners (Final)
Losers (3rd place)
A2 vs D1
Winner (A2-D1) vs. Winner (B2-C1)
B2 vs C1
ROUND IV
The semi-finals (see web above). A new topic will be given and writers must complete between April 20 and April 22. Winners of semi-finals go onto the big game. Losers go to the small final.
ROUND V
Final round. The bronze medal match-up will take place on Friday April 23 (article must be published that day) and the gold medal game will take place on April 24.
What's the incentive to compete? Well, besides all the fame and chicks, here is the breakdown of prizes given to each medalist:
1st Place:
10 Gold
2nd Place:
5 Gold
3rd Place:
3 Gold
Best Rookie/Aspiring Writer:
2 Gold
So, that's the breakdown of the new Canada Prize. Start publishing your articles! You have 5 days to do it! Once again, make sure to include the [CP] tag in the title and PM one of the WGC stormtroopers with a link to your article. You will receive your score in a PM and in a comment on your article.
Good luck, mighty writers!

Bonne chance, journalistes !

I can hardly wait to see the talent this country houses in terms of writing quality.
Come on Canada, lets see what you have got!
Me too 🙂 If we get lots of participation it will be a blast reading these.
to sweeten the pot...
Plugson's former Q4 villa is up for grabs by the winner in addition to the Gold prize.
*subject to change at the discretion of the WGC President, Adasko*
And maybe that 500 CAD is in there too, right? Lots of goodies. Happy Plugson Day.
i will also sweeten the pot.
winner gets a shiny new Dominik, free of charge!
So who are the judges? I don't really see the point of anonymous judges, considering they could be stacked with people who think they can write but are actually just posers...anonymity = a great way to end up with very subjective evaluations...kinda defeats the purpose?
Anonymity is a way to protect our judges as much as the contestants. The judges are all going to be members of the WGC.
How are the judges selected? i.e. based on what merit?
And protect the judges from what? The burning light of transparency?
Ahhh!
Not the burning light of transparency!
Or perhaps protect them from abuse cast at them by people who lose, or attempt to bribe them?
What Etemenanki said. The judging itself will be transparent (an evaluation will be given along with a brief critique justifying the mark) but the judges names will be kept hidden.
TAP, people in the WGC can actually write, as opposed to most of the unoriginal garbage that ends up on the top rated lists. Except for a few certain writers, the more votes an article has the more accessible it is to the driveling masses, which means it has to be bad. eCanada's best writer in history had extremely low vote totals. Oops, I'm ranting. /end
Salty, we can provide you links to the previous Canada Prize articles that were marked. The same marking sheet and similar panel of judges was used then, so the judging criteria/skills of this CP V2 will be quite comparable. After your extensive analysis of the old results and our current marking sheet, we welcome additional constructive criticism. PM this org for additional info.
So far there are no tax dollars funding this event (all WGC raised), so WGC has the privilege of determining the structure and judging panel. Trust me - we're not such tight a group that we won't give all entrants a fair shake. CP is meant to enliven our eCan community, not divide it.
Pluggo I ain't saying WGC is an old boys club out to poop on everyone else. I'm just saying that when someone submits work to be graded, they usually like to know who is actually grading their work....knowhatimsayin?
Count me in Dom
Start writing your articles! You have till April 11!!
