[UKGov]Times are Changing, Wars are Raging

Day 1,144, 19:05 Published in United Kingdom North Macedonia by Foreign Office
Sorry for my absence from the media for the past week or so, but recent events in Foreign Affairs have made me extremely busy. I am of course referring to the collapse of Phoenix and the probable imminent collapse of EDEN, with the demise of both alliances heralding a new era for erepublik, maybe even a possible end to the traditional bi polarity that has existed since the creation of PEACE GC to counteract ATLANTIS way back at the end of BETA. I will do some analysis of the the situation as it stands in regards to the alliances alongside the normal war updates, however I will leave the speculation to less official newspapers 😛.

Death of a Super Alliance

Phoenix, which was beset by problems for a number of months, mainly internal schisms which eventually led to Bulgaria and Brazil leaving the alliance, effectively collapsed after the decision of Serbia and Hungary, the two biggest members of the alliance in terms of power and influence. Whilst Phoenix still exists officially, its unofficially dead. Its death was essentially brought about by internal disputes as well as the new war module, which has caused there to be such a large number of battles, especially between the traditional Balkan rivals that the old alliance structure became unworkable for some members, mainly the most embattled, Serbia and Hungary, who implied in articles that they felt they received a lack of support in their constant wars with traditional enemies.

Another One on its Way?

EDEN has also been having its fair share of problems recently, mainly involving a dispute between the Supreme Commander of EDEN, former Romanian president Bogdan_L, who was angered by Poland rejecting an MPP offer by Romania, which he said was in contravention of the EDEN charter. There were a number of reasons for the rejection of the MPP, the first was a feeling that Bogdan_L had betrayed Croatia, a good friend of Poland, by signing peace with Serbia when he was CP, an accusation that was later proven to be correct. Another reason was a belief that Poland and Hungary, friendly in real life, should be allied ingame, which would obviously pit Poland against Hungary's oldest enemy, Romania. After Phoenix collapsed there were many articles written that stated that Poland and Hungary were looking to create an alliance, which would be a New World Order, and they made the first official step towards this yesterday when they signed an MPP, essentially meaning that next time Hungary is attacked by Romania Poland will be attacked by Romania. One of the key points of Smrtan's (CP of Poland) candidature was to strengthen relations with Hungary and it looks like he is well on the way to achieving this. Bogdan_L responded by releasing an article that essentially stated he believes by signing the MPP they signalled their exit from EDEN and then included some potentially controversial logs from discussions between Clueless and Cerber, influential Serbian and Polish players respectively. This leaves EDEN in a tough position, with many countries facing the tough decision of whether to side with Poland or Romania, which is an especially tough decision for Croatia who has considered both close allies.

The Future

Currently there is only one functioning alliance, PANAM, set up by GlaDos and St Krems over the last month or so to be an Americas centric alliance that rejected the traditional alliances' focus on Europe. They approached USA, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and oddly Japan to be in the alliance, as well as attempting to get France involved, although at no real avail by the looks of it. The alliance is looking shaky however, with Canada rejecting the charter due to concerns that the alliance would mainly aim to further US interests, Argentina deciding not to join officially, currently only an observer, and preferring to continue with the partnership of BIA (Brazil, Indonesia, Argentina) which formed as a sub group of Phoenix but could flourish into a more serious alliance. So PANAM currently looks relatively weak, although this could of course change drastically during the next month, depending on how things go. The other rumoured alliance is the 'New World Order', which would allegedly include Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Turkey and Macedonia and possibly other which would undoubtedly be an extremely strong force that could easily combat PANAM and enemies of the nations involved like Romania and could end up with hegemony over most of Europe. There are no other serious alliances in the public eye at the moment, although there is still a lot going on behind the scenes.

Where We Stand
The UK has many interesting options available for it and will undoubtedly have a tough but exciting decision about which course we will take at some point in the future. Congress will be making the final decision on any alliance, however we are working hard to make sure that when we present the options to congress they will be the best ones we could possibly have for the UK. The key thing about this situation is the need to be patient, there is no need to rush things when we aren't under threat from anyone and I'm sure we should come to a decision which is determined to be the best for the UK by the end of the term. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I don't want to jeopardise any discussions which are currently ongoing.

War Updates
Just to say, these are only for the last few days, not the whole week.

Slovenia Invade Italy

After swapping Serbia into Inner Carniola, giving them access to Central Europe, Slovenia made a move on the Fruit, one of the resources Slovenia needs, region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia on the 29th of December, the same day of the collapse of Phoenix and with the support of many Phoenix/exPhoenix nations beat the Southern European EDEN nation relatively easily. They then moved south, hitting Veneto and also winning fairly easily, to cement their position in Italy's original regions. They then attacked Lombardy, an odd choice of region as it doesn't really continue their journey to southern Italy's oil and saltpeter, resources they almost certainly want, although it is likely that Serbia may also get a piece of Italian oil and maybe get the only saltpeter region of Tuscany. They then moved on to freeing friendly Austria and de facto Phoenix allies Germany, by beating the Italians in Salzburg and then RWing it back to Austria, followed by an attack on the key German economic region of Bavaria, then held by Italy, which they also conquered, although have not yet returned it to the Western European nation. Slovenia then continued their journey south, easily winning in Emilia-Romagna that put them within striking distance of both saltpeter in Tuscany and oil in Marche, and the fact they chose to attack Marche next suggests they could be leaving Tuscany to Serbia for some point in the future, although they may hit it at some point. Marche looks likely to fall to Slovenia and the same could be said of the rest of Italy at the current time, as they have been unable to defend any of their regions with any real strength, although things could change if they get more EDEN support.

Things Get Interesting in the Southern Balkans

Things have got very interesting in the Southern Balkans over the last couple of days as Bulgaria, after many weeks of trading Natural Enemy proposals with Macedonia and occasionally Turkey, made a move to reduce the cyclical boredom that the Greece-Turkey war has become. This move was a Natural Enemy proposal on Turkey which was followed up by an immediate attack on Marmara, the Turkish RL capital region, which they won with heavy EDEN, especially Greek, support. Macedonia then intervened to protect itself and its close ally Turkey by declaring Bulgaria, who have always desired to invade Macedonia due to RL reasons, as their natural enemy and have since attacked Sofia, a battle that is looking very exciting, with Macedonia, fighting in their first ever direct war and backed up by heavy PHX/exPHX support are currently leading well and look likely to achieve victory. Bulgaria have now opened a battle in Black Sea Coast of Turkey, which could drain damage away from both Sofia and Aegean Islands, meaning this could be a pivotal new battle. The Macedonian attack will still put pressure on both Bulgaria and Greece and may mean their double team on Turkey may turn sour and it will be extremely interesting to see which side gains the upper hand in the next few days.

Russia Invades Ukraine

A few days ago Russia did what many were expecting in the previous weeks, a declaration of war on Ukraine, with the main aim of getting grain from their former ally and now EDEN friendly nation, Ukraine. They won the battle for Sloboda, a grain region, relatively easily, meaning they have achieved the key objective of their invasion, and it will be intriguing to see whether they continue further into Ukraine drawing them closer into the uncertain Balkans or whether they look to end the war diplomatically. It seems relatively likely they will go for the former as they have attacked Dnipro and are expected to move on to another region soon.

The Rest
- France end the long running war with Canada through a peace treaty signed at a time when neither country really had the upper hand. France also made peace with the Eastern European superpower of Poland, in exchange for Poland getting the final resource they needed, rubber, from Poitou Charentes, a deal made by former CP Koratos which proved controversial, with some seeing it as a capitulation.
- Hungary and Romania & Serbia and Croatia continue their respective conflicts in Eastern Europe, with neither country really gaining the upper hand.
- Serbia have helped Austria to free themselves from Italian control and in exchange will get a rental deal for Tyrol, a deer region, of 100g per month, which allows Austria to sign an MPP, which will be with Turkey. This will also give Serbia a position to get involved in Italy and also a stronghold in Central Europe.

That's it for today, its very long but I hope you managed to read most of it :3
