Dear Sr.Bin readers,

Today I would like to discuss an out-of-the-ordinary eRepublik tutorial.

This tutorial could be interesting to everyone - the entire players' base of eRepublik, regardless of the country they are coming from. As one of the most successful promoters of eRepublik from eSerbia to date, and as one of the first Serbian eRepublik ambassadors, I believe that I dispose of enough credibility to share my experience with new generations.

These days is anniversary of some of mine initial activities in promoting eRepublik. During this time, I gained experience that I would like to share with other players. I think that these instructions are universal and I believe that they could be applied in any country of the New World. This will probably have better results in smaller countries, particularly occupied ones, but it could also be of great use in highly populated countries as well.

So, let us start...

1. Truth and nothing but the truth

I believe it is important to point out from the outset that truthful presentation of events and situations in the New World is of great importance for a successful promotion. I had the opportunity to witness several promotions based on false events, and by default, they were never successful. Namely, certain eRepublik promoters used propaganda methods where they falsely claimed how their virtual countries are occupied by some countries, in order to inspire their countrymen to join them in the New World. Although it initially looked like things are going to end with a great success, the entire thing collapsed when the newcomers realized that they have been tricked by cheap demagogy used by promoters.

In order for a Baby Boom to be successful, it is necessary that information presented to public through media is TRUTHFUL. As they say, lies have no wings…

2. Playing on emotions

I believe that every country has historical examples which can be brought into relation with events in eRepublik, and which can affect emotions of people who are not familiar with eRepublik in certain way. This is social strategy, so you should strategically play on emotions of people you are addressing. Examples similar to these were used in many promotions. I remember when Hungary went for one of the best promotions, using some past RL hostilities with Romania in the period when their e-country was largely occupied by eRomania. eSerbia was in similar situation when we were occupied by eCroatia. However, the best promotion credits belong to ePoland – their Baby-Booms were also based on some historical hostilities regarding Germany and/or Russia...

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that the ‘ghosts of the past’ or ‘rediscovering of war paths’ is a solution. I’m just saying that EMOTIONS are a relevant factor in every promotion and I’m certain that each eCountry can use them, to a larger or a lesser extent, to promote itself.

Since I’m not an expert in history, I won’t get into giving advice to individual countries how they should go on with their own promotions. I believe that each country could/should identify their own team of people who could ‘nicely wrap up’ events from eRepublik and draw parallels from RL and RL history, and thus affect emotions of new eRepublic players.

3. News, not advertisement!

"Pompous news" is key that I have personally used in many promotions so far, in various media(newspapers, radio, television). When people think about promotion of eRepublik in some other media, they usually recoil in moments when they think "How much would advertisement in some newspapers, radio or television cost". The key to success is in approach. Every media wants for themselves certain kind of exclusive news. If you are able to pack your promotion like "Pompous NEWS" - I'm sure you can appear in EVERY media, only if you are persistent.

For example, I remember when I was making first promotions of eRepublik in Serbia, I was using this recipe. Texts which I have sent to countless editors of newspapers, radio and TV stations had this kind of "pompous news". One of the titles was "Virtual Croatia occupied Serbia!". As you see, the first two points I have made here are contained in this title. True impact on emotions.

I don't remember exact number of media I have contacted that time, but number is significant. For many of them, I have sent texts to even more than one address because I have wanted to find some journalist who would recognize great news which he can use for himself and by placing it in public "earn his bread" through my story. It's true that in RL I'm a man from the media, but I believe that even without that base, this approach would still be a success.

If you sell promotion of eRepublik in the form of news, regardless of the fact that it is actually an ADVERTISEMENT, be convinced that you would be able to feed it even to national television, radio or very popular newspapers, and you won't have to pay for that. Also, if the news is packed skillfully, it will appear on more important place in newspapers or in Prime Time on whatever TV or radio station than any paid advertisement. Therefore, effect of promotion will be much better.

4. Use referral link or no?

When promoting on big media (Television, Radio or Newspapers), I was avoiding this.

The biggest critics of my work when I was doing promotion of eRepublik, were those who were criticizing why I haven't used referral link in promoting eRepublik in my appearances, because that would mean double profit for eCountry (I would donate every gold won on medals to the National Bank, of course). To be honest, if I would do promotion again, I would do everything exactly the same - I wouldn't promote own (or any other) referral link. Reason is simple: Decide what's primary goal of the campaign. If that's NUMBER of people who will join some country, then try to minimize the number of objections which new users of some service (In this case eRepublik) might have before they join that service. I think that, if it is possible, you should use referral links, but that MUST NOT be priority. If you really want to create Baby Boom, then your priority is to promote GAME and not your referral link.

Opinions about this case will be divided again and I'm almost sure that 90% of current population of eRepublik would say that it's ok to use referral links when registering, but what I want to know is how much of them WON'T register because of referral link, thinking that "someone is using them". I have a personal conviction that that percent won't be small and that's the reason why I would do everything the same if got involved in a new promotion.

4a. When to use the referral link, then?

Every promotion in some of "big media" can (and should) be used for many smaller campaigns, which should go parallel with "big promotions". In your personal promotions, you can use promo materials from TV, radio or newspapers for the purpose of attracting new people, as follows:

"As you could see/hear/read/watch _________________ (name of media and link to that media) very popular web portal eRepublik is in the trend. I'm inviting you to join the game using this link ____________(Your referral link) and I will personally help you feel more confortable and provide explanation of everything you don't understand in the beginning..."

You can use this on various portals (like, for example, Facebook), forums, e-mail groups or single e-mails, some chat communicators (MSN Messenger, Skype, ICQ) etc...

5. Tools for promotion

When it comes to using referrer links, certain ways of promotion are much better than the eRepublik’s home-page. One of the best such tools I had a chance to see was made by player kide83. Next paragraph was taken from his article Stranica Za Dovodjenje eBeba, Objasnjenje Za Pocetnike (Serbian version only).

How do you use this tool?

Take your eRepublik NICK and type it into provided field at the end of URL adress:
http://www.kide83.com/erepublik/en/?ime=NICK (example: http://www.kide83.com/erepublik/en/?ime=Lipec)

If your NICK includes separators (SPACE), instead of them you should type "%2B". In the example of (non-existent) nick "Lipec Lipec", properly written url should look like this:
- http://www.kide83.com/erepublik/en/?ime=Lipec%2BLipec

Serbian version of this tool has slightly different link (there is no /en/ in url), and can be found at the following address:

Here you can see how text, fitted in and supported by some media publications, can be wisely used to attract new players, who are practically offered many explanations before they even register in game, thus making their adaptation much easier…

I’ve seen other tools for promotions, but at the moment I can’t remember any of the links…

6. Support is crucial!

Promotion itself can be more or less successful, but the key element of promotion’s success is support given to new players!

I can say that the case we had in eSerbia is really the best example. I’m absolutely sure that, if there wasn’t for the desire and will coming from formerly established gaming community, there would be no success we otherwise accomplished.

After registering, every new player receives promotional message delivered straight into his/hers inbox. Content of such message (which can differ from one country to another) is proposed by the president of eCountry, and afterwards accepted by the Congress.

In the beginning, that caused us big problems in eSerbia. In early stage of the game, many of the newly registered players have chosen to register in regions that were under the occupation at that time. As a result of that, they would automatically receive welcoming message of the country they found themselves in (in our case that was eCroatia). Luckily, we had teams that were monitoring the events and literally “hunt down” newcomers, giving them instructions what to do next. In countries that didn’t have such problems, all of that is automatically resolved with welcoming message. Every welcoming message should contain instructions for new players – especially what to do in the first few days. Since the IGM (In-Game Message) has length limited to 2000 characters total, it is clear that this is not enough to provide new players with directions that are necessary to follow until they experience the game themselves. At that moment, tutorials for absolute beginners came onto the scene.

I must underline that eSerbia had (and still has) players who have written great tutorials, many of which are in use today. Among many of them, the most recognized are players soonchica (one of eSerbia’s first Ministers of Education) and heroina (also one of famous Ministers of Education in eSerbia’s history).

Another very important way of providing new players with support is chat. Although eRepublik simply requires A LOT of reading in order to gain adequate insight into the game itself, there are many impatient people who would like to learn as much as possible – as soon as possible(even though it's impossible). In order to prevent players from quitting the game, support is required from older and experienced players in terms of tutorship, assistance and giving answers to numerous questions new players have in getting to know the game.

Again, I must commend that, from the very begging eSerbia had people who didn’t regret spending time (or food, gifts and even weapons as means of motivation), people who readily expected armies of new players on mibbit irc channel #enovajlije. If I recall right, this tutorship program was initiated by one of eSerbia’s first Prime Ministers, named Makica, and many people that took part in this project remained active to this very day. In time, the entire project overgrown itself, causing many “students” to become “teachers” and keep helping oncoming generations of players. Even today, there are many projects of aiding new or young players, and I think that is the key to success in making one virtual community grow.

I think that, without properly coordinated assistance, it's practically impossible to have a successful Baby Boom.

7. To know is To have!

If you are capable of properly implementing some (or all) steps mentioned above, or adequately join some of those processes (whether it is promotion, education or any other type of support), then you are equally important factor of well organised Baby Boom.

Now that you have this “know-how”, all that’s left is to apply it in practice and convert it into results.

Successful Baby Boom depends on involvement of the entire gaming community. I honestly hope that this text will be helpful to all of you who are willing to participate in promotion of eRepublik, whether just for personal gain or, more importantly, for eNation you belong to – through personal contribution to your eCountry, promoting it beyond the eRepublik and participating in activities that are just as important for one succesfull Baby Boom.

Poštovani čitaoci Sr. Bina,

Danas ću se pozabaviti jednim nesvakidašnjim tutorijalom u eRepubliku.

Radi se o tutorijalu koji bi mogao da bude interesantan svima - celokupnoj bazi igrača eRepublika, bez obzira u kojoj zemlji da ga čitaju. Kao jedan od do sada najuspešnijih promotera eRepublika iz eSrbije i kao jedan od prvih srpskih eRepublik Ambasadora, smatram da posedujem dovoljan kredibilitet da bih neka svoja iskustva mogao da prenesem na neke nove generacije.

Ovih dana, navršava se godinu dana od nekih mojih početnih aktivnosti povodom promocije eRepublika. Tokom tog perioda, stekao sam mnoga iskustva koja bih ovoga puta želeo da podelim sa ostalim igračima. Smatram da je ovo uputstvo univerzalno i verujem da bi moglo da bude primenjeno u bilo kojoj zemlji Novog Sveta. Verovatno će u onim manjim, pogotovo okupiranim zemljama moći da da bolje rezultate, ali verujem da i u već dobro naseljenim zemljama može odlično da se iskoristi.

Krenimo redom...

1. Istina i samo istina.

Mislim da je važno da na samom početku napomenem da je istinito prenošenje događaja i situacija iz Novog Sveta veoma bitno u dobroj promociji. Imao sam prilike da vidim nekoliko promocija baziranih na lažnim događajima, koje su se po defaultu na kraju završavale neuspehom. Naime, pojedini promoteri eRepublika služili su se metodama propagande, lažno predstavljajući kako su njihove virtuelne države porobljene od strane neke države ne bi li na taj način inspirisali mnoge svoje sunarodnike da im se pridruže u Novom Svetu. Iako je inicijalno izgledalo da će sve da bude pravi hit, cela stvar se ubrzo rušila kao kula od karata kada su novopridošli igrači shvatili da su nasamareni jeftinom demagogijom nekog promotera.

Za uspešan Baby Boom, neophodno je da informacija koja je plasirana u javnost putem ma kojeg drugog medija bude ISTINITA. Ne kaže se džabe da su u laži kratke noge...

2. Udar na emocije

Verujem da svaka država u svojoj istoriji poseduje neke primere koji se na određeni način mogu poistovetiti sa događajima u eRepubliku, a koji na određeni način mogu da utiču emocije onih koji se do sada nisu susreli sa eRepublikom. Ovo je socijalna strategija, te je s toga potrebno strateški "udariti na emocije" onih kojima se obraćate. Ovakvi primeri su do sada iskorišćeni u mnogim promocijama. Sećam se kada je Mađarska odradila jednu od najboljih promocija kada je nekakve RL netrpeljivosti iz istorije odnosa sa Rumunijom odlično iskoristila tokom perioda kada je većim delom bila okupirana od strane eRumunije. Sličan primer smo i mi u eSrbiji iskoristili kada smo većim delom bili okupirani od strane eHrvatske. Zemlja koja je do sada verovatno odradila najbolju promociju ePoljska, takođe je svoje Baby Boom-ove zasnovala na nekakvim istorijskim netrpeljivostima na relaciji sa Nemačkom.

Nemojte me pogrešno shvatiti - ja ne kažem da je ovde potrebno buditi nekakve "duhove prošlosti" i "iskopavati nekakve ratne sekire", samo napominjem da EMOCIJE jesu bitan faktor u svakoj promociji i ubeđen sam da svaka eDržava može da ih pronađe u većoj ili manjoj meri prilikom svoje promocije.

Pošto nisam stručnjak za istoriju, ne bih se ovom prilikom upuštao u davanje saveta pojedinim zemljama kako da odrade ovu vrstu promocije. Smatram da bi svaka zemlja mogla/trebala da odredi nekakav sopstveni tim koji bi mogao dobro da upakuje nekakve okolnosti iz eRepublika i povuče određene paralele iz RL-a ili RL istorije i na taj način utiče na emocije novih igrača u eRepubliku.

3. Vest, a ne reklama!

"Pompezna vest" je ključ koji sam lično koristio u mnogo promocija do sada, na raznim medijima (novine, radio, televizija). Kada ljudi pomisle na promociju eRepublika u nekim drugim medijima, obično ustuknu u momentima kada promisle "koliko bi koštala reklama u nekim novinama, radiju ili televiziji". Ključ uspeha leži u pristupu. Svaki medij traži za sebe određenu vrstu ekskluzivnih novosti ili vesti. Ukoliko ste u stanju da vašu promociju, upakujete kao "Pompeznu VEST" - siguran sam možete da se pojavite u SVAKOM mediju, samo ukoliko ste uporni...

Primera radi, sećam se kada sam radio prve promocije eRepublika u Srbiji, koristio sam ovaj recept. Tekstovi koje sam slao nebrojenim redakcijama novina, radio i TV stanicama imale su ovakvu vrstu "pompezne vesti". Jedan od naslova je bio "Virtuelna Hrvatska okupirala Srbiju!". Ukoliko sagledate prve dve tačke koje sam vam rekao, one su sadržane u ovom naslovu. Istiniti udar na emocije.

Ne sećam se tačnog broja medija koje sam kontaktirao tom prilikom, ali je cifra pozamašna. Mnogima sam poslao tekstove i na više adresa jer sam želeo da pronađem nekog novinara koji bi u mojoj priči prepoznao odličnu vest koju može da prisvoji za sebe i da je plasiravši je u javnost i "zaradi svoj hleb". Tačno je da sam u RL-u čovek iz medija, ali verujem da bi i bez te podloge ovakav pristup imao uspeha.

Ukoliko promociju eRepublika plasirate kao vest, bez obzira što se radi o REKLAMI, budite ubeđeni da ćete moći da je plasirate i na nacionalnoj televiziji, radiju ili visokotiražnim novinama, a da nećete morati to da platite. Dodam li tome činjenicu da ako je vest vešto upakovana, ona će se pojaviti na udarnijem mestu u novinama i u udarnijem terminu na bilo kojoj radio ili TV stanici nego bilo koja plaćena reklama. Samim tim, efekat promocije biće daleko bolji.

4. Koristiti referral link ili ne?

Prilikom promocija na "velikim medijima" (televizija, radio ili novine), izbegavao sam ovo da radim.

Najžešći kritičari onoga što sam radio, kada sam radio promociju eRepublika, bili su upravo oni koji su mi zamerali zašto nisam koristio referral link prilikom promocije eRepublika u nastupima koje sam imao, jer bi to značio dupli prihod za eDržavu (naravno da bih svaki gold donirao u kasu države ili državnu banku). Iskren da budem, kada bih ponovo radio promocije, isto bih uradio - ne bih promovisao sopstveni (ili bilo koji) referral link. Razlog je jednostavan: Odlučite šta vam je primarni cilj neke kampanje. Ukoliko je to BROJ ljudi koji će se priključiti nekoj zemlji, onda pokušajte da smanjite sve one zamerke koje bi eventualni novi korisnici nekog servisa (pa tako i eRepublika) imali pre nego što se priključe istom. Mišljenja sam da, ukoliko postoji mogućnost, treba iskoristiti referral link, ali on NE SME da bude prioritet. Ukoliko želite zaista da napravite Baby Boom, onda vam je prioritet promocija IGRE, a ne vašeg referral linka.

Naravno, mišljenja će po ovom pitanju biti podeljena i ovoga puta i gotovo sam siguran da će 90% sadašnje populacije eRepublika reći da bi bilo ok da se koristi referral link prilikom registracije, ali me interesuje koliki je broj onih koji se NE BI registrovali upravo zbog referral linka jer bi imali osećaj da ih "neko koristi". Ličnog sam ubeđenja da taj procenat ne bi bio mali i upravo je to razlog zašto bih opet uradio isto prilikom neke nove promocije.

4a. Kada onda koristiti referral link?

Svaka promocija u nekom od "velikih medija" može (i treba) da se iskoristi za mnogo manjih kampanji, koje bi trebale da idu nekako uporedo sa ovim "velikim promocijama". U tim, vašim ličnim promocijama, mogli biste da iskoriste promotivne materijale sa TV-a, radija ili novina u svrhu privlačenja novih igrača, na sledeći način:

"Kao što ste mogli da vidite/čujete/gledate ______________ (naziv medija i link ka istom) veoma popularan web portal eRepublik je u trendu. Pozivam Vas da se priključite u igru preko ovog linka ______________ (vaš referral link) i ja ću Vam lično pomoći da se što bolje snađete na samom početku..."

Ovo možete da iskoristite na raznoraznim portalima (poput recimo FaceBook-a), forumima, e-mail grupama ili pojedinačnim e-mailovima, nekim chat komunikatorima (MSN Messenger, ICQ, Skype...) itd...

5. Alati za promociju

Prilikom upotrebe referral linkova, postoje određeni alati koje toplo preporučujem za bolju promociju igre od same home-page (ili referral link) stranice eRepublika. Jedan od najboljih koje sam imao prilike da vidim do sada je napravio igrač kide83. Sledeći pasus preuzet je delom iz njegovog članka Stranica Za Dovodjenje eBeba, Objasnjenje Za Pocetnike (samo srpska verzija).

Kako se koristi ovaj alat?

Iskoristite vaše eRepublik IME i upišite ga u predviđeno polje na kraju adrese:

Ovde možete da vidite kako se dobro uklopljen tekst, sa podrškom nekih medijskih izdanja koja su emitovana na državnoj Televiziji, može dobro iskoristiti za pridobijanje novih igrača. Novim igračima je praktično puno toga objašnjeno pre nego što se registruju u igru i onda im je automatski mnogo lakše da se adekvatnije uključe u samu igru...

Viđao sam neke slični alate koje su pravili i drugi igrači, ali sam u međuvremenu zaboravio na kojim se adresama nalaze...

6. Ništa bez podrške!

Promocija kao promocija, može da bude manje ili više uspešna, ali je ključ uspeha svake promocije podrška novim igračima!

Mogu reći da je primer koji smo imali u eSrbiji zaista jedan od ključnih. Da nije bilo toliko volje i htenja od strane dotadašnje igračke populacije, apsolutno sam siguran da ne bi bilo ni uspeha koji smo postigli.

Prilikom registracije u igru, svaki novi korisnik dobije promotivnu poruku koja mu stigne direktno u inbox. Tekst ove poruke predlaže svaki predsednik neke eDržave, a parlament je usvaja kao takvu.

U eSrbiji smo imali velikih problema na početku. U ranoj fazi igre, mnogi naši novopridošli igrači registrovali su se u regijama koje su bile pod okupacijom. Automatski su dobijali pozdravnu poruku zemlje u kojoj su se našli (u našem slučaju eHrvatske). Srećom, prateći zbivanja, imali smo timove ljudi koji su bukvalno lovili sve novopridošle ljude i slali im uputstva šta da rade. U zemljama koje nemaju ovakve probleme, to se automatski rešava pozdravnom porukom. Svaka pozdravna poruka treba da ima uputstva za nove igrače - pogotovo šta da rade u prvih nekoliko dana. Kako je dužina IGM (eng. In Game Message - poruke u igri) ograničena na 2000 karaktera ukupno, ubrzo se shvati da je to nedovoljno da novim igračima da neophodne smernice šta da rade dok se malo ne upute u samu igru. Tu na scenu stupaju tutorijali za apsolutne početnike.

Moram da naglasim da je eSrbija imala (i dan danas ima) odlične igrače koji su napisali mnoge tutorijale koji se i dan danas koriste. Pre svih, verovatno su najpoznatije soonchica (jedan od prvih Ministara Obrazovanja) i heroina (takođe jedan od Ministara Obrazovanja u istoriji eSrbije), ali i mnogi drugi (neka mi ne zamere što ih ovoga puta neću pomenuti - dame imaju prednost 😛). Najveći broj tutorijala su napisani (ili bar pomenuti) u novinama Ministarstva Obrazovanja Srba.

Još jedan važan vid podrške novim igračima je i chat. Iako u eRepubliku jednostavno MORA dosta da se čita da bi mogli adekvatno da se uputite u samu igru, mnogo je onih koji su nestrpljivi i koji bi želeli "što pre" da nauče "što više" (iako je to nemoguće). Upravo zbog toga da bi se izbeglo da mnogi igrači odustanu od igranja, potrebna je adekvatna podrška starijih igrača u vidu mentorstva koji su spremni da pomognu i odgovore svim novim igračima na bezbroj pitanja koja im se mogu pojaviti prilikom upoznavanja sa samom igrom.

Opet, moram se pohvaliti da je eSrbija imala mnogo ljudi koji su od samih početaka imala ljude koji se nisu štedeli u vremenu (ali i hlebu, poklonima, pa i puškama kao vidu stimulansa) i koji su spremno dočekivali armije novih igrača na mibbit irc kanalu #enovajlije. Ovaj mentorski program, ako se ne varam, startovala je jedna od prvih Premijerki eSrbije, Makica, a u radu ovog programa učestvovali su mnogi ljudi koji su aktivni i dan danas. Vremenom, celokupan projekat je prerastao sam sebe i kasnije su mnogi "učenici" postajali "mentori" i dalje pomagali novim igračima. I dan danas postoje mnoge akcije pomoći novim ili mladim igračima i mislim da je to ključ uspeha rasta jedne virtuelne zajednice.

Smatram da je bez adekvatno uigrane pomoći gotovo nemoguće imati uspešan Baby Boom.

7. Znanje = Imanje!

Ukoliko ste u mogućnosti da izvedete neke ili sve gorepomenute korake onako kako bi trebalo, ili da se adekvatno uključite u neki od pomenutih procesa (bez obzira da li je u pitanju promocija, edukacija ili bilo koji vid podrške), onda ste i Vi jednako važan činilac dobro organizovanog Baby Boom-a.

Sada kada imate ovo "znanje na dlanu", potrebno ga je samo primeniti ga u praksi i pretočiti ga u imanje.

Uspešan Baby Boom zavisi od angažovanosti čitave igračke zajednice i iskreno se nadam da sam ovim tekstom pomogao svima koji su voljni da učestvuju u promociji eRepublika.
