With the rain pouring down the last few days in Belgium, lots of competitions became very heavy. An overview of the outdoor spectacles

Yesterday: Wellens strikes back

The cyclo-cross race in Essen was very important for Sven Nys and Zdenek Stybar. They needed points to get back in the running for the gva-table. Klaas Vantornout got the best start, with Wellens and Albert closing the gap later on. After two laps, the story of Vantornout was over. He was replaced by Nys. Vantornout gave up later.

Nys accelerated, leaving first Albert, then Wellens behind. But with only one lap to go, he ruined his wheel, and so his race was over. Wellens held his position and won after some devastating weeks. With Nys out of the race and Stybar 14th place, Kevin Pauwels is almost certain of the victory in the gva-trophy.

Kenya rules in Brussels

The most prestigious race in the crosscup was held today. Brussels is always the heaviest race in the series, but with the extra mud, it became probably one of the heaviest races this crosscountry season.

In the women's race, there was a constant leading group with Chepkwony, Belete, Kipgeyon and Herzog. Chepkwony, winner of las year, took the lead the last lap and didn't gave it away. Kipgeyon achieved the second place, giving the first two places to Kenya. Belete, almost Belgian now, became third. Maveau was the first Belgian, Dejaeghere keeps the lead in the table.

Koech, another Kenyan, ruled the men's race from start till finish. Atelaw Bekele, european champion, became second. Pieter Desmet who got 8th place, takes the lead in the table, but with the comeback of Jeroen D'Hoedt, lots of things can change.

Cyclocross in Wallonia = great race

Again, Pauwels had to defend his place in a ranking against Nys, this time in the world cup-table. The citadelle of Namur was the scenery of a heroic race. Vantornout, Nys, Meeusen, Pauwels, Stybar and Albert fought till the bitter end. With Nys attacking, the field was spread out, but then he had a flat tire. Albert used this to attack, but Nys and Vantornout were able to get back. Later on Albert once more attacked, Nys tried to follow, and eventually he made it. When he got back, he immediatly attacked, leaving Albert with a second place. Pauwels lost his lead in the table. In the end, lots of French were found in the first ten, with Mourey(7), Duval(eight) and Gadret(10).
