[Politics] On enemies...

Day 2,107, 23:57 Published in Belgium Finland by ErnestHemingway

I’m currently reading the essays ‘Inventing the Enemy’ by Umberto Eco, one of my all-time favourite authors by far. It is an erudite and open-minded literary and historical approach on how the imagery of ‘the enemy’ is used to justify the own battle.

Very short and hardly doing the essays any credit:
‘If it’s ugly, deformed, unclean and deceitful, it’s okay to oppose it.’

Why was it just to burn witches? Why was racism socially acceptable?
Why was it okay to treat women like inferior?

A very interesting read, especially if you project it on the current situation Belgium is in.

Suddenly, I see citizens being called ‘PTOers’ or told to ‘Go back to country X or Y, you have no place here.’ Citizens I would personally vouch for without one second of hesitation.

When you and your followers believe the other side is ‘different, malicious, ugly, …’, you can easily defend your own cause, your own struggle.

I have not included any names or factions in this article. We all do it, even without knowing it. It is endemic to human nature, yet through reflection, we can counter it.
