[KT89] Disillusioned and Disenfranchised: Part 1 The Financial Juggernaut
Kilgore Trout 89
“I remember a time when...”, this is a phrase I’ve found myself uttering frequently over the last few months. Although it makes me sound like the cranky old man in line at the local Starbuck’s, I realize that the fact that I remember a better time tells volumes about the current state of eCanada. “I remember a time when” is the notion that inspired this series and I know that there are others out there who remember just as well as I do. The focus of this opening article is “I remember a time when it was the idea that mattered, not where it came from”.
The fact that eRepublik is a social game makes our interactions the most important part of playing the game. What makes a country great is people constantly coming up with new ideas and new ways for improving the ways we interact with each other. The problem is that no matter how good an idea is, it cannot be translated into a reality unless it gets exposure. Ask yourself, how do we advertise our ideas? Articles have limited readership, IRC only ever has a handful of people on at a time and most people ignore the forums. We have all taken to using the advertising module to get our ideas out. This is where the tyranny of the Financial Juggernaut is taking its toll on our society.
A Financial Juggernaut is a group or person who amounts of money so great that they can dominate the ad module. To put it plainly, ads cost money and those with money get the most exposure. Have you ever tried to get an ad out during an election? The average congressional candidate can only afford a small amount of gold for one or two ads. On the other hand, the Financial Juggernaut is able to spend vast repositories of gold on as many ads as they want with no impact on their standard of eLiving. For the majority of players, saving up 10 gold requires several days of work unlike the Juggernaut who is able to amass multitudes on money in a short period of time either with a credit card, mass following or through illicit means. What does this mean for eCanada? It means the ideas that get circulated, the articles that get voted to the front page and consequently the people controlling the public discussion will by and large be those chosen by the Juggernauts.
Don’t believe me? On an election day, try to take out an ad for only 1 gold. See how many times you have to refresh the page before you see your ad. I took out three ads of this kind during the congress elections and it took three hours to get my first impression. What dominates on election days are ads from the wealthiest parties and citizens who already have the support of many voters. This leaves new candidates and younger citizens unable to make their voice heard. When was the last time we had significant and meaningful change in eCanada? For the most part, the same people are always in charge and the same people lead the national discussion. So long as the Financial Juggernauts are able to use their wealth to control what messages and ideas are circulated, the status quo will never change. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we need to look no farther than the 1ronman scandal to see what happens when power goes unquestioned. We need to encourage positive change for eCanada by working to take the power away from the Juggernauts.
How can we do this? How do we help new voices and new ideas find an audience? The answer lies is community building and changing the way in which we vote up articles. When you find an article either through ads, shouts or the front page, don’t immediately vote for it. Don’t vote for an article simply because it was written by a friend or group that you support. Read the article first and if you like the ideas presented, then and only then should you vote it up. In this way, ideas will be promoted not based on where they come from, but rather on their merit. This however is not enough to compete with the Juggernauts who will inevitably continue to use their financial backing to promote themselves. eCanada above all has a strong community and we need to cultivate that. When you find an article that you like, add the author as a friend. If someone comments on your article, add them as a friend. The more friends we have, the more distance our shouts will go. After you vote for a good article, shout the link to your friends or post in on IRC or in forums. If we want to promote new ideas and new ways to improve eCanada, we need to support our thinkers as much as we can.
Now before I inadvertently launch a crusade or find the message of this article detracted from by people defending themselves, I should point out that the Juggernauts are usually not malicious. Some of the most prominent Juggernaut are political parties who bombard the media and ad module with ways to benefit society. When an ad promoting a mentorship program or an article recruiting citizens to an army become prominent, it is often through the acts of a benevolent Juggernaut. These are of course beneficial to the improvement of society and these initiatives should not be taken away from simply because they are promoted by Juggernauts. However what we should recognize is that in these cases, it is the merit of the idea that is beneficial. What we have to avoid is the assumption that because a party presented a good idea, that by extension, all of their ideas are good. We must above all remember to think critically about what is presented to us.
If there is one thing that you take away from this article, is should be the need to evaluate what ideas you choose to support. What is the goal of this ad? What does this article contribute to eCanada? Is this legitimate discourse or simply propaganda and spectacle? Do I support this idea? Would I be willing to share this with my friends? These are the sorts of questions you should ask before you follow an ad or vote for an article. If we support each other as a community and work to place merit about wealth, we stand to gain much as a society. Until next time eCanada, Stay Strong and Carry On!
If you liked this article, be sure to subscribe so you can follow the series. The next article will be on ”The Brand Name Zombie Swarm and will look at the cults of identity that spring up and refuse to die. How are the brand names we identify with controlling our interactions with each other? Do we even understand why we have chosen these brands?
Comments
"Read the article first." Best advice ever.
Alternate response for man in last comic: "No, because they didn't." ...
Very good article and can be used not only in eCanada, voted.
I just looked at the pictures and I am confused, usually after I look at the pictures i read the article bur right now.... I need a brake... my head hurts : O
I'm going to refer to you as KilBAAAW Trout from now on.
trollololol
Lol. I hope the pictures aren't too confusing. It's the words that are important.
The fish man in the last comic used something that didn't happen so that I could maintain political neutrality. My goal is to finish the series without making any direct commentary on parties or individuals. I'll end up using some as examples, but only when I need to and when I do, I won't make a statement about what I think of that group.
The giant man look like a chinese!
I agree with most of what you wrotte, only one little thing I'd put some clarification, to get your point across. you either need gold for ads, tons of subs or a big network of friend. So yeah, the new guy pretty much can't get their point across no matter how we twist it across. But it should be noted that not only Money is key in influencing change.
Yeah, I know. My point was that it should've happened. Hence why I'm doing it myself now.
A comment more related to the article: Very well said, sadly it is true.
MMMMMMMMMWAH!
The importance you assign to ads might be a little over-rated - don't a lot of people use AdBlock and not even see them? - I have used it for the last few weeks and don't miss them at all.
IMO we should continually encourage everyone to add as many active eCanadians as they can find to their friends list so you see everyone's shouts - shouts are totally democratic and except for TemujinSpam ;} they're a great way of seeing whats going on and what people have to say, no gold involved.
kilgore I actually disagree with you, anyone paying attention to what is happening in eCanada through the discourse in the top 10 articles or even comments on articles has a pretty good understanding. People here aren't so stupid that they just vote up whatever is in an ad. So i disagree with the financial juggernaut theory
I think we end up getting caught up in the cult of personality in this game.
when you said : “I remember a time when it was the idea that mattered, not where it came from”. i think you were hitting the nail on the head.
for example; lets say a new idea gets presented we'll call that idea x.
if right now that idea came from 1ronman... it would be completely shouted down, and would end up getting 15 votes. Whereas, if it was written by the 1ronman of 6 months ago it would be the number 1 article.
Or for example back when i was in politics and Scorpius would say something stupid and all the DAL minions would agree with him not because he was right but because he was scorpius.
try this experiment kilgore; don't tell anyone but trade articles with someone like Coda. If she published your article and your published hers, her's would be number 1 because the CAF blindly vote and her article published in your paper would languish at number 7 or 8.
for the record though i enjoy what you bring to the table kilgore and i'm subbed.
Rainer, you'll love my next article on "The Brand Name Zombie Swarm". All about the people who establish cults of personality and how people follow them without thinking.
The problem with ads and article voting isn't with the active people who can be bothered to keep up to date on current affairs. It's the 2-clickers who log in, see someone with an article with 100+ votes or 5 ads dominating the media and take that information at face value. If ads weren't a problem, there wouldn't be warnings out saying not to buy government bonds for example. It's not the largest problem, but I think alot of people underestimate the 2-clicker vote. Look at the PP election between Rolo and I. We had one of the highest voter turnouts for a long time because we both went out of our way to mobilize the 2-clickers.
This is why I left eCanada and it's de facto single party state.
Thanks KT, so true. I like your ideas, hope many people read it and dont be afraid of this wall of text.
Voted! (Already subbed)
Do you really think eCanadians are that stupid KT,we all know ads dont actually influence anyone in eRep...
EDIT: They do influence some people, really stupid people, like people who put blind faith in 1ronman...or in...ROLO 😛
Ads are no doubt a useful tool in impacting some Canadians. Currently there is a population of 4149 people in Canada. How many people would any of you say you see commenting in articles or in IRC over the course ofa week. Would that number be higher than 200 people? I would be surprised if it is even that high, but I would bet a lot that it is not even close to 500 people. So the question is, whta about the other 3500 other people that are in Canada? What do they do? Ads, which flash on every single page you have to click on in this game are one way in which these people are guaranteed to at least have a chance of seeing something. Does it impact them? No way to really know, but Ads are a guaranteed way to get a message out because it is the only guaranteed way to have a player see something by other players.
This was a great read and completely agree on how votes on anything are dominated by the eUpper class. Your idea of befriending people who comment and vote on your article is something I will do.
Wow, Kilgore paid for votes???
Ads can be misleading and can certainly drown out other voices when enough Gold is invested. Luckily, we have the Top 5 media listings that is designed to feature good quality or pertinent articles. Generally, this cannot be spammed if we follow the advice provided by KT89: "read, think, vote." (a novel idea we should adopt for RL elections)
The only time I remember the Top 5 being severely overrun by a Financial Juggernaut (great term, I wish Dean22 was around to see it) was when jbdivinus purchased enough votes to have the Top 5 serve as a personal a😛 "Vote Jbdivinus for DAL PP." No doubt it affected the DAL party president election.
Yes, it may be worth mentioning in your article that "Vote Purchasing" is another tactic employed by Financial Juggernauts
Grand Frere still runs the show.
rolo bought votes for this article..
lol thats actually pretty funny
Lol. For the record, I didn't pay for the votes. Anybody who knows me can attest to the fact that I've never had money of my own. Hell, I once had to borrow money to run for PP elections.
The irony that somebody paid to get this article to the top is absolutely hilarious though. I guess if nothing else it proves my point.
ill buy u some more
I paid for 50 votes : D
