A Comparison of Export Revenues among Sectors and Countries
or “Where to invest your (free) export licenses”

Esteemed readers of Ekonomi Politik,

After the recent change by the game administration on inventory management and export licenses, many people are left with some free licenses in their hands which they can tie to a country, and the shared question in min😛 “Where should I invest my export licenses?”

Although this question requires some serious forecasting on the taxation policies of future governments, the trade embargoes and wars between different countries, and the paths of commodity prices in each country and sector, a simple benchmark analysis can be conducted by making use of current import tax rates, current prices of commodities, and exchange rates. After having this benchmark model, every investor can add their own foresights into the resulting ranking according to their expectations and firms to reach a robust estimate on the optimal way to spend the export licenses.

For brevity, I will deter the discussion of how this should be done to a later date, and share my findings with the current data available. All data have been gathered by hand between EST 21:00-22:30, 03/16/2011.

I hope that my analysis will benefit the investors and also the consumers due to the resulting gain in market efficiency. Have a nice read!

Conclusions

The main results of this analysis are summarized in the last fifth table. In making your final decision, never forget to check the trade embargoes between your country, and the country which you are planning to export to. Also, it would be wise to give priority to allied countries, and to avoid current and potential enemy countries to prevent wasting a license due to an embargoe.

In addition, if you have a specific sector in mind, you might want to watch the prices in that sector for a few days, since there can be occasional deviations from the mean. Unfortunately, I have no access to time series data, and cannot test if the current prices reflect the mean, or are a result of a recent freak innovation.
