[Education] Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

Day 2,275, 13:07 Published in Ireland Ireland by University of Ireland

February 11, 2014

Hello eIreland,

IRC is used extensively by players of eRepublik to communicate with each other in real time. There are active IRC channels for most large organizations in eRepublik especially governments.

Some players will tell you that you need to be active on IRC if you want to be fully immersed in eRepublik and get involved in strategy, government, and community. On the other hand there are players who will tell you that there is ample means for communication in-game or who are opposed to using IRC.

Ultimately it's up to you whether you want to get involved on IRC. If you do want to, here is some information on how to get started and a list of important channels.

What Is IRC?
Internet Relay Chat is a protocol for live interactive Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing.

Using IRC
Internet Relay Chat can be accessed using either an IRC Client or an online web service.

Web Service: QChat

Windows Clients: mIRC, IceChat
Mac Client: Colloquy

Once you're using Internet Relay Chat you'll need to learn the basic commands. On your first visit to IRC the commands you'll use are listed in order below.

1. Join a Server

/server irc.rizon.net

Rizon is the server used by the majority of channels and players.

2. Register a Nickname

/msg nickserv register password email

This will begin the process of registering the name that you are using in IRC. Note that IRC names cannot have spaces. Double-check that you are satisfied with your current name before you enter this command. The password you enter will be used in the future to identify (log-in to) your nickname. An email will be sent to the address that you provide in the command.

WARNING: Any time you are using a command that includes a password make sure that you're not typing it into a channel where other users can see your command text. Instead, use the left-most tab in most IRC clients.

3. Confirm Registration of Nickname

/msg nickserv confirm confirmation_code

Once you have sent the registration command a confirmation code will be sent to the email that you have provided. Use that code in this command to finish the IRC registration process.

4. Identify Yourself

/ns identify password

Who goes there?! Now that you've registered a nickname you can use this command to identify yourself each time you log-in to IRC. Again, be careful where you're typing your password.

5. Be A Bouncer

/whois username

Once you have some friends on IRC you can use this command to check if they're registered and make sure they aren't an impostor.

6. Join A Room

/j #channel_name

Now that you're a registered user of IRC, you can start joining different channels. Use this command with a number sign infront of the name of the channel you want to join.

7. Kill Ghosts

1. /ns ghost username password

2. /nick username

3. /ns identify password

Sometimes you'll get disconnect from IRC (for whatever reason) and when you try to come back it will say that your username is already in use. These three commands will let you kill the ghost and take back your identity!

8. Change Your Name

1. /nick new_username

2. /ns group original_username password

3. /ns glist

Grouping allows you to change your name while still remaining registered. This is useful if you want to change from "Username" to "UsernameAFK" for example. (1) You use the first command to choose your new nickname. (2) The second command ties that new password to your registered nickname. (3) The third command lets you see all of the names that are attached to your registered nickname. Any nicknames that you haven't used in 90 days will expire from your list.
