Coming up on the 15th of May (or the 16th, depending where you live) is an election for Party President. That is, party members vote on who they want to be president of the party. This is an important role, especially for the Top 5 political parties. This article looks at what role Party Presidents play in our political system.

Party Presidents have two indirect roles to play, both very important to the proper functioning of our government.

Firstly, the nominate a Country President candidate. Only a Party President can nominate a Country President candidate, or endorse another party’s existing candidate. Citizens can only vote for an endorsed candidate. So,Party Presidents control your choices for Country President.

Their second indirect role requires the party be in the Top 5 for numbers of members. That is, a Top 5 Party. This role influences the people that get elected to Senate (or Congress, officially). The Party President will choose the order that Senators are elected. Only Top 5 parties are allowed to have Senators though.

If, for example, a Party has 10 people running for Senate but only wins enough votes to have 7 elected… The last 3 potential Senators on the list do not get elected.

There are other things Party Presidents could be doing.

They could be the Party’s spokesperson, presenting policies to the rest of the country for debate and some sort of substantive decision before an election.

They could be campaigning for new members, especially if they’re outside the Top 5.

They could be leading internal discussions on new policies, and leading their Senators in the current political debates.

You can only vote for someone who wants the Party President job. People nominate themselves through the My Party link, under the community tab. It wouldn’t do to have someone unwittingly voted into the position, who winds up trolling everyone...

If you are a member of a political party, on voting day a big blue and white box will appear. Click on it, and vote for who you think will be the best leader of your party. And then, wish them luck...
