#77 Hitchiker's Guide to War

Day 1,351, 15:23 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Gambit8

Hello Readers!

Today I’m here not to give you world news but rather a guide for some British noobs. \o/

Yay.

The Basics
Here, I’m going to put the really basic stuff. When you start a war the country that proposed their natural enemy first (we’ll come onto natural enemies later) will go on the offensive and attack a bordering region. You can’t just attack any region withing a country, you can’t just say, I’ll take a boat and go around to take that region, or I’ll get the RAF to fly in to take this region, it doesn’t work like that. You have to border the region to attack it.
You can see what you border on the region page.

During the battle you will click fight and your damage will push the bar, if your country is over 50% then you’ll gain country points, which if you gain 1,800 of within a battle then you win that particular battle. There are 8 battles in one military campaign, the first to 8 wins and secures or conquers that particular region.
You will gain 10 country points every minute the bar is over 50% within the first 30 minutes of the battle. In the second 30 minutes of the battle, you’ll gain 20 points per minute, then 30 points per minute then in the final 30 minutes you’ll gain 60 points per minute. A battle can only last 2 hours, but, to be fair, the battle usually has a winner by then.

If however, your country was to fail on their attack and lose the military campaign, then the opposing country will then not only have the choice on where to attack, but also when they want to attack. But if the opposing country does not choose a place to attack withing 24 hours then the game will automatically choose a region to attack.

Natural Enemy

Okay, lets start off the non-basics with how you actually start a war. The Natural Enemy (NE).
A natural enemy can be proposed by a congressmen to start a war with a bordering country. You cannot NE a country that does not border you.

The NE gives a 10% bonus damage when fighting, thus 10% more rank points. 10% doesn’t seem like a lot, but it can make all the difference in major wars.
You also get 10% more strength which contributes to the damage you do during battle. Natural Enemies take part in training wars, which we’ll come on to a little bit later.

Another key thing about Natural Enemies is that you can only propose one every 7 days. So if for example Indonesia attack Australia making Australia their natural enemy, but then 5 days later the war is still ongoing and China attack Indonesia. China’s attack would take priority but they cannot switch their natural enemy for another 2 days.
However, if Indonesia were to wipe Australia off the map before China attacked then because Indonesia are no longer at war/border Australia then the natural enemy will end and you can propose another.

This can help when blocking another country. So, for another example, Slovenia were about to attack Italy again, however, Croatia took Italian regions making it so Slovenia no longer border Italy, therefore the natural enemy they would have had, would end instantly.

A Natural Enemy needs 66% of congress to approve to make the proposal accepted

Mutual Protection Pacts (MPPs)

So what would happen if a country has an MPP with both countries in a war?
Lets take a realistic example here. If Indonesia were to attack Brazil right now then who would Argentina fight for, having an MPP with both sides? Argentina would fight for Brazil, because Indonesia did the attacking, therefore Indonesia would lose the Argentine MPP, however, if Brazil attacked Indonesia then Argentina would lose their Brazilian MPP and would only be able to fight for Indonesia.
But, if an MPP was signed during a war. Lets say Argentina’s MPP with Brazil expired. Indonesia took this opportunity and attacked Brazil as they would lose no MPP for doing so, but during the war Argentina and Brazil renewed their MPP, what would happen then is that however is doing the attacked for the next round will lose the MPP. So if Brazil were to secure their region and then go on the offensive, they’d instantly lose their MPP.

A brilliant example would be of the UK-Ireland war. UK had just left Terra and still had a US/Brazil MPP, but Terra raged, and US/Brazil both signed an MPP with Ireland, so UK made themsleves lose to make Ireland go on the offensive and waste 20K Local money on 2 MPPs that were instantly lost.

Tactics

There are many ways in which you can use wars to tactical advantage. One would be to attack when you have the edge. Such as time-zone advantage. For example, if the USA was to attack UK, the bets time to attack us is when the majority of our population is asleep, in which time, they would be awake.
There are some countries such as Russia or China that are hard to get that time-zone advantage on. Russia, because their country is spread over many time-zones, and China because most of their population doesn’t actually consist of Chinese people, but rather people from all over the world that have decided to go to China in-game for various reasons.

Time-zone advantage doesn’t have to come from your own country, but also MPPs. Ireland would rather attack by night because even though Ireland are asleep for the most part as well as the UK, Canada are awake and still able to fight, whereas UK’s MPPs consist mainly of European countries.

The other form of tactics is what I stated above, with MPPs and making countries lose them by purposefully losing battles. This will harm the opposing country’s economy, more so to those smaller countries. MPPs cost 10,000 local currency, which is also the amount resistance wars cost. So if a country spends their last 10K on an MPP, only to lose it an get wiped then they will be unable to start a resistance war to free themselves until the government finally get some money, or if someone starts a resistance war by themselves.

Another tactic is to hurt their economy by cutting off regions from their capital. A country’s capital is everything, but if an opposing country were to surround the capital, or just make it so the capital no longer borders any of their other regions then the only resource bonus they’ll be getting is that of the capital, and for countries that are so used to such an economy, like China for example, can cause major damage as it’ll turn the economy upside-down due to the wages, prices etc. shifting.
To get benefit from a region, it has to have a direct link to the capital.

Resistance Wars

A Resistance war can be started when someone is occupying one of your home regions. However, you can only start it after 24 hours after it being occupied, which means by the time you are able to begin a resistance war it is guaranteed that the opposing country is attacking the next region on the list.

Wealthy countries can seemingly start as many resistance wars as they want, for example Turkey used to be able to win every single campaign against Bulgaria, however, due to Bulgaria being wealthy, they can start a resistance war every 24 hours and therefore drag out the war because as soon as Turkey has captured their next region, the last region has already been liberated.

If however Turkey were attacking Iran and won every single battle then things would be a lot different. To begin with Iran may be able to liberate their regions as soon as they were lost almost, but eventually they’ll run out of money and be unable to start resistance wars. This is how wars can majorly damage opposing countries economy.

Thanks for reading, I’ve no doubt missed something out about war, if I have, leave a comment below and I’ll edit it in 🙂
