Soldiers of the Irish Republic,

Today on the 3rd of May, 98 years ago, the executions of the leaders of the Easter Rising began. These men took upon the blood sacrifice and gave their own lives for Ireland's future. They were outnumbered, out-gunned and had little experience in comparison with the British Army. This did not deter them, they stood up for their beliefs and followed in the spirits of previous Irish Republicans such as Wolfe Tone.

These men gave up their lives for my freedom, for your freedom, for our freedom.
These men fought for economic sovereignty, Irish liberty and equality. We believe in their dream and will do our utmost to uphold it.

In this day in Irish History.
Pádraig Pearse was the first leader of the Rising be executed by firing squad on the 3rd of May 1916. Sir John Maxwell, who was leader of the British forces did not want to return his body to his family claiming:
"Irish sentimentality will turn these graves into martyrs’ shrines to which annual processions will be made which would cause constant irritation in this country."

That said, Charles Blackader, the British officer who chaired Pearse's court-martial sai😛
"I have just done one of the hardest tasks I have ever had to do. I have had to condemn to death one of the finest characters I have ever come across. There must be something very wrong in the state of things that makes a man like that a rebel. I don't wonder that his pupils adored him."

Thomas Clarke was executed after Pearse on the 3rd of May. Before he died he said "‘I and my fellow signatories believe we have struck the first successful blow for Irish freedom. The next blow, which we have no doubt Ireland will strike, will win through. In this belief, we die happy. '

Thomas MacDonagh was the third signatory to be executed. "I am to die at dawn, 3:30 a.m., 3rd. May. I am ready to die, and thank God that I die in so holy a cause. My country will reward my dust richly."
His only reservations about dying were for his wife Muriel: "God help and sustain you, my love. But for your suffering this would be all joy and glory"

You must always fight for your beliefs.
