Archimedes: Strength 101 [republished]

Day 3,033, 08:59 Published in India Croatia by Anubis.3

Halloa everybody!

Some days back, one of the newest members of our community had a question. We are going to address this today, but first we must have a clear understanding of what strength really is.

Now, strength is one of the most fundamental parameters in the game. It defines you and what other citizens’ first impressions are of you. Notice how when checking out other players’ profiles, your eyeball gravitates towards the strength level. Based on the size of the figure, your brain makes calculations on that player’s worth and modulates an appropriate behavioral response. Strength is that much ingrained into our everyday psyche.

In battles, the effect of strength on your damage is determined by this formula

For our purposes here, it’s sufficient to understand that, the value S stands for strength and that it has a considerable impact on the end-result. This is part of the reason why a newly arrived player with 40 strength can only deal damage in the single-digits, while higher strength guys are capable of winning medals with a few strikes.

Naturally, it is a terrifying prospect of competing with tanks as these for medals. The division system has been created to avoid such a suitation. People get their beginnings in the lowest division and only need to train for some months before getting to a good fighting level. As they fight, experience is gained and eventually, the player is booted to the next division.

Unfortunately, this superb natural order of things is being disrupted with devices such as the infantry kit which enable fighting without the burden of experience. Higher strength individuals are steadily accumulating in the lower divisions, leading to a few problems.

But, Archimedes, you still haven’t answered my question. How do players get massive amounts of strength in the first place?

We are getting there. Now as you know already, there are four training grounds. When in their lowest level, the grounds give you very little strength at exorbitant cost. As they are upgraded, with the aid of gold, the grounds can be utilized to give you more and more strength. The players who have fully upgraded their training grounds proceed to buy a Training Contract. This makes the training costs affordable and players start training regularly.

The maximum strength one can get from the grounds is (20 + 10 + 20 + 40 = 90)

Now, assuming you train daily without any breaks in-between, the strength you would gain over a year will be (365 x 90 = 32850). Keep training for two more years and you’ll wind up with nearly 100,000 strength!

Players who joined the game early on and have been around for years have incredibly high strength, thanks to their daily “2-clicking” – that is to say, work and train. It’s the game’s way of rewarding people who've stuck around for a while.

Basically, there are four categories of players in erepublik. They are as follows

1. The Junkie

These are players who simply couldn’t wait and went out all cylinders firing from day one. They are characterized by a high level and relatively low strength. Rituraj is a well-known extreme example.

2. Milkers

Milkers are among the most patient of people in the eWorld. They go for years without making a single kill on the battlefield, building a humongous amount of strength in the process. When they strike, gaining medals is as easy as picking daffodils. After a hundred decorations and a promotion to the next division, they retire to milk in silence all over again. Vigorious is a particularly famous “Milker”, going through the process twice.

Some milkers are accused by their countrymen of simply building up an account to sell off and ignoring important battles.

3. Regulars

These represent the mainstream, people who train their strength up to sufficient levels and commence fighting. They respond more readily to fight and make up a major part of a nation’s fighting force in the lower divisions. Peter and anurag are a few good regulars

4. Whales

Whales are among the oldest in the game. A splash from a single whale can render the efforts of a hundred lower division fighters virtually meaningless, as the crew of the Essex found out to their misery.

For a few hundred euros, you can get your own whale. A cautionary note – you will need to pour much more into the game, if you do not want to become the smallest whale in the ocean. Pizzarayne and MohanB are some well-known whales

That’s all for today. We will look deeper into the mathematics involved in strength in the forthcoming article. Feel free to send in further questions and suggestions in the comments.

editor's note - This is a republished article. The original can be found here. We are republishing this for two reasons -

1. lightshot decided to stop hosting images for erepublik, rendering all the images in the original post unviewable. We have since switched to photobucket, which is a lot more reliable hosting tool

2. This is a prelude to the second part, which will be published soon. We felt it appropriate to give a refresher before it came along 🙂
