[MoFA] CODE Attack on eUS / Romania Attack on eIre

HELLO. THIS AN ARTICLE. HERE ARE SOME WORDS.

CODE ATTACKS eUSA

And so the circle of eUS alliance life is complete once more.

Shortly after the cessation of the major global conflict known as World War VII – on April 1st to be precise [insert 'Joke Alliance' gag here] – CODE was formed by all the Non-Allied belligerents on the Pro-Andes/Anti-Asteria side of that conflict bar Saudi Arabia.

If the freeing of Iran was to be considered the pre-eminent victory for the Pro-Asterian forces then the liberation of the USA was the principal achievement of Andes and (what was to later become) CODE. Fast forward to September 23rd 2020 and the liberators of the US have turned would-be invaders following simultaneous air-strikes launched by four founding fathers and a later member in the form of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Horror! What Happened Between Them?

It's always arduous to pin-point a precise moment when there is a dramatic shift in policy especially as the 'Big Show' is often preceded by weeks - if not months - of rising tension/resentment/disparity/blablabla/bollocks...[delete as applicable].

In this particular circumstance however it's probably most fitting to focus on the eUS-Asteria agreement that was announced on eDay 4650 and the build up to it as the foundation of what's just occurred.

The eUS has always been a prized target and not simply just “cus 'Murica” and seemingly everyone dislikes them and blames Trump for all the World's problems historical or otherwise. So far as the game is concerned it's a huge, resourceful expanse of land capable of hosting a vast amount of Training Wars. In a game mockingly referred to as 'Farmville' this makes the eUS one helluva farm!

Recognising this and fearing that the eUS was about to be violated and passed around Asterian nations like a semi-conscious, drug-addled whore – bear in mind that the eUS was still sore from it's previous wipe – then eUS CP, Tyler Bubblar, looked for some sort of reassurances from their fellow CODE members.

None were forthcoming.

At the time CODE were boycotting* the purchase of packs and their top brasses' opinion was that each member nation focus on maintaining their respective communities throughout the unspecified duration of this protest.

*If you've ever seen shouts of “Boycott Incoming” or such like and gone “Eh?” well it's probably in relation to this and other similar boycotts.

US Cosies Up To Asteria

Underpowered, underfunded and unmoved by the nigh on certain plight of the eUS; Tyler assessed the scenario playing out before him and was correct in his judgement that it was “unsustainable”. With no guarantee of resources – certainly not enough to fend off the might of Asteria – he sought a resolution with the eUS's would be oppressors...and he got one!.

Though it was met with circumspect sympathy by many in CODE and the pro-CODE US faction this was in no uncertain terms more a massive leap toward Asteria rather than merely partaking of the ol' peace pipe.

The article that announced this deal was chock full of glaringly obvious grievances against CODE – albeit softly worded – whilst ladling saccharifeous admiration over Asteria. The provisos of the aforementioned deal surely could not have been construed as anything other than the eUS heading toward the exit...6 months of no CODE/Andes TWs...at least 5 Asterian TW partners...a 12 month NAP with Canada (Broliance brah)...

There was some waffle in regard to not being asked to leave nor fight against CODE but personally I've always thought such clauses not to be worth the non-existent paper they're written on. You can't control where your citizens hit the same as you can't control when they use the potty.

It beggars belief that two months later anyone was taken aback when the law to leave the alliance came before the eUS congress. A flimsy excuse and something about Ireland was given as the ultimate justification yet, in reality, the reasons behind it were already outlined when their agreement was signed with Asteria (and those same points reiterated in an article published the day after the law proposal.)

Beyond A Reasonable Doubt

There were perhaps some who still believed the eUS remained neutral and were playing the very long game; making the best of the situation and sitting on the fence until CODE re-emerged with fire in its' belly.

This was a reasonable and justifiable position especially when you consider that of the 10 congressmen that voted against leaving the alliance – of whose objections CODE found 'comforting' – 5 of those now make up the incumbent eUS government including President Krapis.

Even if their prior voting record had offered a glimmer of hope to the Pro-Code faction the most humble of political students could not have failed to notice the sycophancy toward Asteria strewn throughout the eUS CP's articles after taking office. He made absolutely no secret of his admiration of the way Asteria organise themselves and welcomed the eUS as a prospective partner rather than a subjugated nation/mere asset.

There are nutcases everywhere though so to hammer home the point...

Hue. USA Attacks Brazil

All hopes of a reversal of trajectory were dashed just over three weeks ago when the eUS launched an air-strike against Brazil. *

Last term the main objective of Asteria was to cripple the 'playgrounds' of CODE/Andes (i.e. France and S. America) and deny them valuable gold mining and ranking opportunities. This was a success and their focus turned to tightening the noose around their neck in the European theatre of war; this presented the eUS with a golden opportunity to not only have some real action but also to prove their worth to Asteria by directly 'managing' a Pro-Code nation...an opportunity they didn't baulk at.

(NOTE: There has since been an NAP signed between Brazil and Asteria/USA and this is now a Training War)

CODE Responds

From the outset this appeared very interesting and awoke me from a slumber. CODE had launched simultaneous Air-strikes on Kentucky (B&H), Mississippi (Cyprus), Illinois (Turkey), Nevada (Croatia) and Missouri (Thailand). Factor in too that when they launched these strikes the eUS had open battles with Bulgaria, Venezuela, Romania, Peru, South Korea, Poland, Portugal, Iran, Moldova, Cuba, Taiwan, South Africa, Serbia and Macedonia within their cores plus one with Russia outside of them.

Perhaps their damage would be spread too thinly if people were off chasing gold in the numerous TWs and they would rely on promises made by Asteria, something Krapis was quick to remind them of by quoting a clause from the eUS-Asteria Agreement from May 22nd.

“Article 12.

Under the terms of this agreement, in case of an action targeting the USA core regions that wasn't previously approved, all parties must consider it as an act of aggression. “

Not that they needed too much external help come the day as the results and damage tallies proved. There was a game plan that went (possibly) better than the eUS had anticipated. Croatia and Cyprus were allowed to land almost completely uncontested (both winning 110-0) and B&H were swatted aside with relative ease losing 94-10.

Their main focus was on denying Turkey and Thailand a landing zone. After a well fought first few rounds however momentum, morale and – most importantly – damage were well in the eUS's favour and the attack duly fizzled out. This is perhaps best exemplified by the aviation battles where in the first round the top fighters each laid down millions in damage, by the second this was down to the low-mid hundreds of thousands.

But...it was never about winning...

CODE issued a press release that is one of the least inspiring call to arms I've read in a very long time and I speak as someone that has the upmost respect for the alliance.

Defeatist. Docile. Dispiriting.

It came across as far less a rallying cry for vengeance and more a jeremiad against a next door neighbour. Less “Death to the infidels!” and more “He promised to cut his hedge back but you know what? He didn't!”.

Though they avoided using certain terms it was evident throughout the article – most notably the outro – that they had no real faith that this action would be 'successful'. But...it was never about winning. This was about sending a message.

Aside from promoting their cause of protesting to promote a “better way of eLife” and “setting standards” this was also about showing “what is right and wrong” and as such a number of justifications for this damp squib of an invasion were listed. Primarily they were as follows:

- The eUS were secretly plotting against them...
- Brazilians reported that they were mocked on their RL independence day...
- Brazil was 'blackmailed'...

From a neutral players standpoint whose opinions may be swayed – and therefore presumably those who this address was for the benefit of – more information was needed. What was this 'secret plot'? What was said? How were Brazil 'blackmailed'?

The details and evidence were scant and I shan't cast my own opinion of these specific matters; instead you can read the accusations here and the US CP's response here (complete with responses to questions he asked of CODE).

A Personal* Conclusion:

“Thank f*ck for that!”

From a military point of view one can't say the operation was completely unsuccessful as both Croatia and Cyprus landed; though this appeared to be part of the plan and at the time of writing Cyprus have been removed and Croatia are soon to follow.

From a diplomatic perspective however this was a very bad day at the office for CODE and handed a massive propaganda victory to the Pro-Asterian faction in the eUS.

The main reasons the eUS left CODE were owing to their lack of firepower and seeming ambivalence toward directly assisting an ally. By launching an attack which they explained at length they were going into half-cocked and without a hope of winning just reinforces this narrative.

Ultimately the question is...why? It reminds me of one of the few articles in recent times published by CODE (of by any alliance for that matter) whereby they dolefully had to state “CODE is still alive”. I feel they simply HAD to do something...anything...in response to the eUS going full Asteria to remind people once more: CODE is still alive and perhaps the door is open for an old friend to return...

IRELAND

Ahhh the Anglo-Irish TW has been a bit of a Schrödinger's cat and had the eUK government donning white lab coats, sticking crayons up their nose and debating quantum superposition rather than simply when to open battles.

Seemingly every few weeks Ireland have found themselves either wiped or facing a wipe and left eUKers asking whether the TW alive or dead? The latest attack on Ireland by Romania has us assuming the latter.

Clarification of Romania's intentions was immediately sought as soon as the DoW law was proposed. Not only was this attack unannounced but detrimental to the eUK and scuppered part of an agreement signed not only by the euK and Ireland but by Serbia and Indonesia also. Futhermore the eUK did not want to become entangled in what was a seemingly personal attack.

We recieved no response so had to look at the broader picture from which to draw a conclusion.

Make no doubt it; the Romanian Declaration of War was orchestrated to hurt the Irish community as much as possible. Dynamite – the Romanian CP – has made little secret of his animosity toward the Irish and has been maintaining a Trade Embargo with them for quite some time now. Not only does the wipe deny them regular warfare (and therefore gold and rank-up opportunities) but also means producers in Cork and Shannon are unable to WAM.

Timing wise it set out to deny them a congress and by sheer coincidence comes just prior to the upcoming Resource Concession event. The rules of this event are scant but there's potential this could screw over Ireland for years to come.

Taking all of this into consideration it was nigh on impossible to view this as anything beyond a hostile attack deigned to cause maximum damage. The Irish CP – King Trito Fisher – recognised this too and the Irish put up a – shall we say – less than staunch defence of Mayo allowing us to take thier last region.

Good Timing/Bad Timing
In terms of trying to kick a nation in the bollocks the timing was superb for the aforementioned reasons.

Outside of that I personally* believe the timing was sophomoric.

Aside from Anglo-Irish relations, that have been more than cordial over successive terms, Ireland had potentially entered a new era of diplomacy by sitting at the table with Serbia and Indonesia and striking a peaceful accord.

Though the Irish were at hearts still a CODE nation this 'truce' may have warmed them towards Asteria. The subsequent attack will have undone many notions of peace and as the Irish CP has stated “the only thing left for eIreland to do is to resist Asteria alongside our allies”.

At the very least the attack has galvanised the Anti-Asterian sentiments. At the very worst the attack is a death knell in the coffin of a small nation in this game.

Time - and the resource event – will ultimately tell the outcome of this but it's a dark day for diplomacy and the Irish none-the-less.
